It feels strange posting about Terminus before it's even started. I thought staying at the hotel would be anticlimactic, but coming home every night is even more so. There's a definite sense of feeling left out when everyone talks about con stuff. To be honest, after today, I'm tempted to just find some people looking for another roommate and join up with them.
If there's one thing I've noticed about the con so far, it's that there are three distinct groups of people:
1) The cliquey teenagers who come just to hang out with friends from previous cons, party, and get drunk.
2) The fandomers.
3) The really intense emo people who scare me a little.
I spent the first half of the evening with the first group, and then the second half with the second. I have to say, the second half was considerably more enjoyable. I adore Nickie, but her friends are really... er, not the kind of people I usually hang out with. They all know each other from Prophecy, so it was kind of weird tagging along with them. Honestly, they spent the entire time getting plastered. Not much fulfilling conversation going on there. Most of them didn't even register for the con -- we snuck into the Wrock concert, and they're planning to sneak into the ball. I might have to do the same if I can't find a way to buy a ticket.
I left the Wrock concert early and talked to Nickie for a while before heading up to the
terminus_hd goodie bag stuffing party. Let me tell you, introducing yourself by your LJ name to people you only know by their fics and occasional RL posts (or, in some cases, just their username popping up in comms every once in a while) is THE weirdest thing in the world. It was fun, though, and I got to meet a bunch of awesome people ♥ I'm hella excited for the H/D meet-up tomorrow. The trip there is gonna suck, though. It takes me about two hours by train to get to Millennium Park, which means an early morning for me ;__;

I think I would probably be considered a fandomer... though, I think I only have a vague idea of what that is. haha. I'd be the one with big wide eyes, acting like Luna Lovegood and spazzing over everything. >_<
Wrock!!! Ah! Who played???
I didn't stay at the Wrock concert for long. I was there for, I think, The Remus Lupins, Draco and the Malfoys, and part of The Whomping Willows.
And ohmygod! -fangirls- I am so jealous! Oh did the Whomping Willows play 'Draco and Harry'???? That is my favourite song ever!!! 'It's Draco and Harry sittin' in a tree. S-N-O-G-G-I-N-G!" -falls-
Man, I knew there was a reason I wanted to go to DePaul. hehe. >_< Some day I'll be rich and I can fly out and go to all the HP cons. hehe.
I hope you have fun at the rest of it! ^_^ I'm sure you'll meet tons of people.
LOL yeah, that's how I knew it was the Whomping Willows. The only Wrock song I know is "Draco and Harry" :P
Well, at least you have Azkatraz next summer! :D

and i love the awkwardness of calling people by their usernames. i remember when i would talk to bailey on the phone and paul came up in coversation once and we were like 'oh artemis' and just saying that outloud was wierd. i can imagine you being like "hi i'm underscore pink chocolate from live journal" you should just wear a tshirt so you dont have to say it outloud and be like 'hi im annie, aka *point to shirt*" lol
A lot of people in LJ fandom are unwilling to give out their real names, and most of the people who are willing would prefer you call them by their username. So it's really awkward, because a) I can't pronounce usernames on my flist and 2) it's just awkward. Introducing myself was THE most awkward thing ever, seriously. When I walked into the room for the goodie bag stuffing party, everyone went silent and looked at me and I was like, "uh, hi, I'm Annie -- er, I mean, um..." and then NQ jumped in and told them my LJ username. I was like, lol o ya forgot about that.

I have not been to an HP con, but I've been to cons in other fandoms. They were some of the most awkward experiences in my life, and I suspect that an HP con would be little different. Don't get me wrong, I'd really love to meet a handful of people, but I've discovered that I am simply not the con-goer type of fan. Public displays of squee and costumes make me squirm with discomfort. I'm a person that likes a quiet drink and interesting conversation. Many fandom meet-ups that I have been to are just downright awkward. Here are these people you can talk online with forever, but then you meet them face-to-face and it's kinda, well, a big buzz kill.
Anyway, just wanted to vent and let you know you're not alone in feeling kinda weird about cons specifically, and perhaps even fandom, in general. I've been feeling slightly jealous of the Terminus folks (mostly because there are about a dozen people attended who I would *love* to meet someday), but then when I saw the pics of the H/D meet-up I just thought, "Whoa! Dodged a bullet with that baby!" *shudders*
I'm pretty jealous of the people at Terminus, too. It wasn't my cup of tea, but I wish I'd enjoyed it the way other people are enjoying it. Plus it seems like a big deal, so I want to be there for the sake of being there. LOL, does it really look that horrible from the pics? I haven't seen any of them.
