For some reason, this ties in with Mayo. -shudders-
It's Friday today. The last Friday before OBS, and technically the last official Friday of term one. I suppose i should be feeling relieved, now that i can slow down a little. The past few weeks have been nothing short of monstrously hectic. Yet i still feel a little unsettled. Maybe its the guilt that's built up because i know i haven't finished my homework... or maybe its the thought of OBS next week. i am NOT a outdoors kind of person.
Then again, maybe its just the shock of being one term into sec three already. Geez. Two more terms, and the exams rush up to leer in our faces. 3/4 year more, and we'll be in '07. Time sure passes fast for someone who's not enjoying her life. Thinking about what nah said about "enjoy your secondary school life" or something like that, (remember he said something about all our seniors regretting how they studied too hard?) i wonder if one day i'll look back and wish i'd slacked more. Hmm. I believe its more probable that i'll think "WHY DIDNT I PASS MY MATH AAARGH" instead, but time does strange things to people.
Then, i think about how our seniors apparently had 'three times your current workload' and wonder how they managed to sleep every night. Sigh.
Is it too much to ask to be allowed to rest? SIAs suck.

I was trying to work on RAFT today, and i found out that this:
a polynomial P(X) is separable over a field K if its roots in an algebraic closure of K are distinct - that is P(X) has distinct linear factors in some large enough field extension. Equivalently, P is separable if and only if it is coprime to its formal derivative P′.
Irreducible polynomials over perfect fields are separable, which includes in particular all fields of characteristic 0, and all finite fields. This criterion is of technical importance in Galois theory. In this connection, the concept of separability is of lesser importance if P is not assumed irreducible, since repeated roots may then just reflect that P is not square-free.
The criterion above leads to the quick conclusion that if P is irreducible and not separable, then
P′(X) = 0.
This is only possible as a characteristic p phenomenon: we must have
P(X) = Q(Xp)
where the prime number p is the characteristic.
With this clue we can construct an example:
P(X) = Xp − T
with K the field of rational functions in the indeterminate T over the finite field with p elements. Here one can prove directly that P(X) is irreducible, and not separable. This is actually a typical example of why inseparability matters; in geometric terms P represents the mapping on the projective line over the finite field, taking co-ordinates to their pth power. Such mappings are fundamental to the algebraic geometry of finite fields. Put another way, there are coverings in that setting that cannot be 'seen' by Galois theory. (See radicial morphism for a higher-level discussion.)
...was classified under elementary mathematics. WTF...
and by the by, rest assured. I eventually didnt do it anyway.
Oh, and can someone tell me how to do a ljcut again? it keeps on not-working... ;_;

I suppose i'm lucky enough that these things have been a staple of my new year celebrations as long as i can remember. Yet, i realise the most important part of the celebration is meeting my relatives again. Cheesy, i know. But even though we all live on the same small island, we hardly see each other except for celebrations like these. Its kinda sad. If only they lived nearer we could play ice-and-fire everyday XD gosh i'm juvenile. But then 'tis hard not to be when they're all so small.

After weeks of neglect, i am finally writing in LJ again (:
The main updates are:
I HAVE A NIECE!!! woots!!
She's so chubby and squishy and adorable and cuuuuuute. @_@ Her lower jaw sinks under all the fat in her cheeks. And, she weighed 3.6kg upon birth. FYI, the average weight for a newborn is 2.7kg. ... ...yeah. Scaryness. At any rate, she's probably the most good-tempered baby ever. She sleeps through everything, even when we were screaming directily above her. Haha, just like a Snorlax. (must be too much GBA. Nevermind.)
Guzheng Camp was actually fun!!!!
The main activities were CCA, games and movies. And we got two hours of slack a day, labelled 'free time'. And there was a water bomb fight, and ghost stories and everything, and we had as much time as we wanted to bathe. Only that the Night Walk was traumatising. The school is actually really peaceful at night, you know. Kinda dark, but not really 'scary' in any sense. Only thing is that you can't see as well - we all fell prey to cockroaches. EEEEW. And i nearly fell down the stairs and died. (Then there really WOULD be a ghost, hahar xD) But the worst part was during one of the games, where we had to find a certain plastic frog in a bowl of unknown vile liquid. It wasn't like we had to drink it or anything, but sticking your hands in the oily puke-coloured muck was enough. (One junior actually did puke.) It was made up of our leftover dinner ( rice, chicken, cabbage), plus water and teh tarik and coffee powder and green food colouring. EEEH.
Ah wells. It was okay in the end though (:
Finally!! i have started on my x'mas cards!!!
It won't be like last year again. -nodnod- i MUST remember to send them out. (most of the time, you see, i only finish them by Chinese New Year. I thought it was a little... belated.)

In general, whatever anyone else might think, i was quite happy with the chalet.
... okay, so i wasnt there for the entire duration, and i'm generally quite placid about things, anyway. Still. Through all those arguments and angst, i think at least a small part of us was having fun (: I mean, how often do you get to stay up all night and some of the morning and crap about random things (i shall not repeat these certain Things for the sake of modesty) and host a relatively successful barbeque (considering that it was raining!!) where we had sambal stingray and other delicacies. This year is already coming to an end, and we should treasure these last few memories while we still can. Especially since many of us will be separated next year.
Speaking of which, our sec 3 classes.
Thanks to Deb (through Amanda), i now know i will be in class 310 next year. It seems strange, after two years of being a twelver. Needless to say, people from both classes will be thrown around and split apart. So far, according to Amanda, 310 and 311 are the GEP(IP), where 310 is made up of 20 students, 12 from 212 and 8 from 211. 311 is made up of 12 from 211 and 8 from 212. 312 is the 'O' level class and if you do the math you'll figure out the statistics for the 312 too, but i'm too lazy to as of now. Plus theres a girl coming in from Dunman.
I think i'm going to cry!!
... will miss 212 so much.
Oh, and before i forget (: thanks to Ying Ming and Noreen for getting me my birthday present!!! That was sweet xD

Current Music: Simple Plan - I'd Do Anything
This is for Jass, who wanted me to blog about today.
Ahem.
Today, we were lounging about and pigging out at Great World City!
Since the IRS ushering briefing thing was at 1430, we met there at 1300 to have lunch - me and ming and jass and ronnie. After a not particularly satisfying lunch, (we more or less agreed that the food was sub-standard) we talked aimlessly about S.H.E and Jay Chou and November Chopin (was that what it was called?) and hair and actresses with wierd hair and how cheronne's sister's hair defied gravity and how Einstein's hair defying gravity was related to the discovery of gravity (i suddenly realise, he wasnt the one who discovered gravity. Was he?)and food and... erm. Yeah. You get the picture. Endless ramblings. Anyway, me and cheronne went to get drinks, but we decided the drink stall's drinks were SO EXPENSIVE ($1.40 for a coke with lime!!!) that we went all the way to cold storage next door to save about half the price (: How very typically Singaporean. There is always this sense of satisfaction when you save on something, you know?
Then, we decided that it was about time to go, so we went.
We didnt get lost.
On the way, we saw this lady who looked suspiciously familiar. Ying Ming (or someone else? dont remember) went "Hey! Isnt that Ms Ow?"
Jass said, "No lah, sOW's stomach bigger."
(she was wearing sunglasses, by the way. As well as a sleeveless blouse and long dark coloured pants. Skinny.)
We walked a little closer, and then right past her.
Me: "You know, it looks like Ms Ang."
Jass: "Yeah... NO WAIT it IS Ms Ang. You're ms ang right?"
Ms Ang: "..."
Yeah. So in the end she was on her way there as well. Freaky, no?
OHYEAH OHYEAH.
Backtracking a bit, we saw the DHS teacher (the long skinny one from the lit sem) at cold storage.
TWO TEACHERS IN ONE DAY. GASP.
mmhmmm mmhmmm.
Then, there was the briefing...
-fast forward-
okay. Back at GWC.
I decided to first head to the toilet, because my berms were showing from beneath my skirt. COUGH. I took them off, and then we started on a short-lived shopping spree - it lasted one shop.
Then we got hungry.
Thus began the Journey to the basement, where we started stuffing our faces heartily. First up was Cinnabun Tree, which i really regret not eating... but anyway. IT SMELLED SO CINAMMONY. AAAH.
Then we had ice-creams and yoghurt, and then we went to cold storage, where we got some of old chang kee's lovely oily crispy sotong heads and such. Then we went to the sushi stall next door and got sushi. AAAAH. SALMON. Which turned out to be not as fresh as the store opposite, but nevermind. We got some of those later, too (: FRESH SALMON (raw) IS LOVE.
Then, we went to seven eleven and got slurpees and mashed potato and mush soup, and we went our uneventful (for the most part) ways back.
Sigh. I never know how to end these things. Ah. Oh yeah (: good luck to all IRS presenters tomorrow hor!!
Will be there, bright and early, in a banana suit.

... it went something like this. With lots more laughing.

quiz (once again) koped from Jass...
| Your Birthdate: November 19 |
You are resilient, and no doubt your resilience has already been tested. You've had some difficult experiences in your life, but you are wise from them. Having had to grow up quickly, you tend to discount the advice of others. You tend to be a loner, having learned that the only person you can depend on is yourself.
Your strength: Well developed stability and confidence
Your weakness: Suspicion of others
Your power color: Eggplant
Your power symbol: Spade
Your power month: October |
That is NOT TRUE.

Disclaimer: This is for my reference only. You know what my memory is like; a sieve with a large hole through it. So dont read it if its going to make you sad! (:
FIRST DAY
.. i forgot. -takes reference from previous entry-
SECOND DAY
The highlight for me was getting full marks for an algebra test!!! IN JAPANESE OKAY. xD I never thought i'd say this, but THANK YOU MR TEOOOOOOOOO
And then, there was volleyball, in which the strange ang moh PE teacher got us to headbutt the ball in an effort to show them how one was supposed to be 'below the ball' to surf. Hmmm. That sounded wrong. AHWELL (:
Anyway, as a result, my hands were sore. Terribly. And needless to say, i managed to kill a few thousand brain cells. -animated clip of eroding sieve- Sigh. Erm... then, we had a music lesson! A special one, for the exchange students. We sang a canon for 'Shiki no Uta', the song of the seasons, and meanwhile gaped at the school's very cool blackboard. I dont really like them, actually, cause i'm allergic to chalk. BUT, this chalkboard would have been a blessing to all short teachers in our school. It was split into two sections horizontally, and you could pull them up/down so that you could, technically, reach the top of the board without difficulty.
... i forgot the rest. AAARGH.
LAST DAY (TODAY)
Today was most memorable cause i bought a bento set from the caterer downstairs. (They dont have a canteen. Everybody brings a packed lunch made or bought, and eats in class.) It was expensive. (EIGHT BUCKS.) But very interesting.
Then, we had a traditional tea ceremony (MY LEGS. THEY ARE SORE.) <--- we had to sit Japanese style. PAIN.
But the japanese man4 tou3s (manjuu) and the tea was really really good, i guess. (: then we had home econs... which was also interesting. culture shock, much - you eat right after you cook, in the HE room. there is a long table in the centre of it for that purpose.
Then there was souji - classroom cleaning. They take this very seriously. All the tables are moved to the front, and a few people get rags and brooms. The floor is swept, and then these people put their rags on the floor and RUN on all fours, with both hands on the cloth, across to the other side of the classroom, effectively cleaning it. They held races!!! Haha, so retarded! xD but fun...
The next memorable event was during their english lesson where their really funky teacher (like he laoshi!!!) got them to practice their english by asking us questions. ...which were really wierd. One of them was "what's your favourite sports brand?"... ahaha. (: then there were questions about favourite bands and computer games (they all play warcraft!!!) etc. it was fun!!
then it became embarrassing. i went up to say a speech as a representative of the exchange students in my class. i messed up BIG TIME. my GRAMMAR. SCREAM.
... ahwells.
its over now (: got lots of nice souveniers (sp?) gah i cant spell souveniers!!! or maybe i'm just sleepy. hmmm. anyway. they inclded:
laminated A4 card-thing with pics of the class and me
a paper doll thing!! (SO CUTE.)
a certificate of participation (the principal...)
a photophrame (A4)
manymany contact numbers... they all want me to write ;_; shit. i cannot lah, too lazy. will get steffi to help... xP
some shiny lock and bookmark with the Japanese school of Singapore's logo on it
I think the most interesting part of the entire trip was the culture, though. Cheesy as it sounds.
did you know,
1. The school looks shabby on the outside. However, all the rooms, excluding the hall, are air-conditioned.
2. They have three periods for recess: Lunch, Playtime and Resttime.
3. They are disciplined enough to eat lunch in class without a teacher watching over them. When the bell rings, everybody immediately goes off to wash their hands. (not STIFFLY, but they all go immediately, if you know what i mean.) Then they go back to class and shift their tables so there are small groups of 6 tables. There is no changing of seats to be near your friends. Then, everybody gets out their food and waits politely for everyone else to be ready. Finally, they say "itadakimaaaasu!" and THEN eat. During this period, no one gets up. Not until the bell rings, and they all say "gochisou-sama!" and clear up.
4. Most of the guys change in class. (i dunno about other levels, but this was sec one.) For PE, they even change their pants in there. None of the girls (who obviously change in their proper places, being civilized beings) bat an eyelid.
5. They are encouraged to leave their things under their tables.
6. People sleep through all the classes and manage to not only not get caught, but also pass everything.
... cant think of a conclusion. tired.. had to write this before i forgot...
night...

am at the japanese school now (: my gosh. they have 1 hour periods. and you have to bow and greet the teacher at the start of every period. in other words, even in the middle of a lesson, the monitor calls out 'ochitsuke!' and everyone bellows 'ONEGAI-SHIMASU'. which, for all you non-japanese proficient people around, means to please (teach us). wow. their teachers seem to have a hobby of pairing their students up, too. although that isnt really relavant...
its part of the school experience!!!
