Some thoughts on the passing this weekend of Charlton Heston, whose mighty visage proudly graces my default icon and whose role as Colonel Robert Neville inspired my nom de keyboard here.

I doubt my poor power can do a better job of paying tribute to the man and his many, memorable roles better than brother pithhelmet did in his fine post. But I shall add what little I can to the millions pouring out praise.

Our generation, who grew up in the shadow of the mushroom cloud instead of the Mushroom Kingdom, had few strong male role models in the media to up look to. The field could be safely summerized as either over-the-boothill old men, or young punk anti-hero types. Heston was one of the few who was neither, and defied easy categorization much as he defied his foes.

Like a colossus he bestrode the screen, with one foot planted in the past and the other in the future...warning us of the dangers of simian oppression, cultist, albino zombies and not-so synthetic protein.

His heroes were larger than-life yet very human, flawed, vulnerable. Some of them got their asses handed to them without a gift box at times. Some were quite cynical too, believing humanity to be fundamentally foolish yet ultimately worth fighting for and saving.

His precious few villains were delightfully devious and he played them also as flawed or misguided rather than simply evil. I wish he'd had more villains in his repertoire, but his heroes got him typecast...they were just too powerful, making it difficult for many to accept him as anything but the good guy.

My favorite roles of his, outside of his three great Sci-fi stints?

*First, he is, was and ever shall be Moses. So let it be written so let it be done!

*El Cid, with the goddess Sophia Loren. I was watching that movie for the first time with my Uncle Mac on HBO the night John Lennon was murdered. Consequently we didn't find out about it till the next morning. It gave me some unexpected comfort. Lennon may be gone, but at least we still had Charlton Heston. If anyone tried to shoot him, he'd shoot back:)

*Major Dundee, one of my all time fav westerns along with Tombstone where he also made a memorable apprearence. On an ROTC field trip to Parris Island back in 84, our host and guide, Major Robnik, told me to order the middies to fall in to board the bus. I couldn't resist but shout out "Platoon! Fall in behind the Major! Fall in and mind the Major!". This led to some laughs and later inpromptu choruses of the theme song with Major Robnik joining in. He turned to me and confessed "I love that movie too."

*Cardinal Richelieu in the Salkinds' and Richard Lester's 1970's Three Musketeers adaptations. As I said, delightfully devious yet strangely admirable. He makes you WANT to like the good cardinal, or at least appreciate his goals. His interactions with Christopher Lee's de Rochefort are one of the highlights of these fine films for moi.

*Ramon "Mike" Vargas in Touch of Evil, where he goes way off the beaten path to play a Mexican gumshoe in Orson Welles' film noir masterpiece. He was robbed of an Oscar for this role.

Off screen he could be just as mega as any of his movie roles.

He never thought of those with whom he disagreed on politics or religion as enemies. He preferred civil, learned discussions to heated debates, even though he never shied away from public controversy. He was a conservative who often championed liberal causes if he felt them to be just, such as civil rights. He believed first and foremost in individual liberty. Pigeon-holing him politically is as difficult as trying to categorize him as an actor. He followed his own drummer, he was his own drummer.

The far right failed to co opt him into becoming one of its standard bearers. The far left feared and tried to belittle him by turning him into a figure of fun. Neither really understood him, both were confused by him.

I used to joke with some of my professors about President Charlton Heston. But I was only half-joking...secretly I wished he would run and knew I would vote for him if he did. Even more secretly, I imagined myself working in his administration...perhaps even as his head speechwriter or Chief of Staff. If a failed actor can become a great president, just imagine what a legendary actor could have done! He was one of those men who could excell at anything his put his mind to, but his mind was too wide and too open to run for president. Pity, we would have had some great speeches!

When he brandished that antique musket and defiantly declared "From my cold, dead hands!", you knew he meant it. It was a great moment, even if he came unintentionally close to becoming a self-parody.

One of my favorite Heston moments occurs near the end of Bowling for Columbine, where he graciously invites Micheal Moore (who ironically I tend to agree with more on politics) into his home to discuss gun control issues. Moore keeps trying to shove a picture of a dead kid in his face. After several agonizing minutes of this, Mr. Heston gets up, shakes his hand and politely excuses himself. Whether you agree with him or no, you could learn a thing or two from him Mikey about class, courtesy and dignity. You don't win converts by being an asshole, even if the majority thinks you are right.

A few weeks ago while perusing Parade I read that he was in the terminal stage of Alzheimer's...my heart sank at the news, but his never did or at least it never seemed to.

If God had a voice, if America had a voice, for me it would be Charltom Heston's.

Doubtless y'all have heard about LJ's purchase by a new, Russian company known as SUP.
Some of you have expressed to me, via your journals or otherwise, misgivings about this turn of events and/or disenchantment with the course LJ has taken since its buyout by Sixapart.

I too am a little leery of these new kids from the Eastern BLOC.

For one thing they are too new...only 6 months! What kind of institutional memory and culture is that?! I have liver-spots older than 6 months! Granted in Interweb terms, 6 months is not too new, but still...

For thing two, all those e-mails and press releases we've been getting are trying too hard to be reassuring. Instead they have the opposite effect...it leads me to wonder what's REALLY up with this SUP?

Also, on a trivial level, I don't care much for the name. SUP sounds like something a teenage stoner says when he comes to ask to mow your lawn or date your daughter.

The pluses?

From all I've heard/read/been told/gathered they have done a good job in Russia. They have even allowed open, Frank (Baaa!) criticisms of Czar Putin and his regime, for which they are to be commended (A promising sign folks).

Their "100 Day Plan" sounds ambitious but promising. I'm all for letting them run with it.

Any company which can grow from nothing and in 6 months be in a position to buy out one of the oldest and biggest blogging sites, must have something going on under its hood.

Let's face it, in certain regards it would be difficult for them to do a worse job than Deep Six:)

Though these Malchiks seem to move fast, I doubt we will see any major changes, for good or ill, for the next several moons.

Finally, for me, as for our Russian friends, LJ has become synonymous with blogging. I've looked at other blogging sites and software and they have failed to impress this Old-Mega Man. LJ is the proverbial pair of comfy, old shoes. So long as it remains relatively free, in economic terms and otherwise, I can't see myself jumping ship anytime soon.

All I am saying is give SUP a chance...I think they deserve it. But if I'm wrong you have my permission to say 'HA! Told ya so!':)

A few entries ago I mentioned how I'm interested in Economics as one of the key driving forces of history and politics...

On the ship of state, what goes on in the engine room matters more than all the drama on the bridge or the monkey show on the poop deck. Banks are the engines.

Now if it were some sort of pioneering, shiny new online distance learning set up, I might be drawn back to ACKademia. This excites me whereas teaching with metheods which have changed little substantially since the Middle Ages does not.

7.Historian

Comment: Ah the Tragical History Tour! I often get hit with this as well. I suppose if I could get a decent Military History gig at some academy. Maybe I could help young officers learn important lessons which could keep them and their charges alive. But at regular colleges Military historians are regarded as on par with teachers of the dark Arts.

8.Lobbyist

Comment: A few short years ago I'd have said HELL FUCK NO. I want to cure the disease of corrution, not become a corporate whore. But now, if it pays well and I don't have to do it long, bring on the prostitution! "Let all the poisons which lurk in the mud, hatch out!" The more corrupt the shitstem becomes the sooner will come the revolution and if I can help hasten the way so be it.

I still have that letter...somewhere. I'm interested in economics more in the Macro sense..as one of the key driving agents of human affairs, than as something I'd want to pursue as a career. Plus, as one of my Brit friends puts out-"Too many scary maths", or as Twain said; "Lies, damned lies and Statistics!".
