Back in the Saddle

The firm has found a temporary office building with power, so we are back in business. There is a meeting this afternoon to discuss how we will make up all of the precious, precious billable hours which were lost last week. The senior partner is almost in a panic over losing all of that money, which I find quite humorous.

The following is an appalling, direct quote one of our attorneys made when thousands of people were still stuck in the New Orleans Convention Center: "Really, all those people there are just criminals, I don't know why they're so worried. They oughta just bomb the place." This guy was much more worried about looters reaching his father's expensive (and not flooded) home than he was about the safety of the human beings stuck in New Orleans.

On the bright side, my husband's company is not "working" per se this week. They are using all of their trucks and company vehicles to haul 3,000 pounds of ice and untold amounts of food and clothing to coastal Mississippi and Louisiana.

I cannot count the number of complete strangers who have offered us food, water, etc. I keep having to insist that I don't need it and advising them to take it to people who need it more. There are still many, many good Americans in this country.
