Character Profile

Character Names: Dr. Henry "Harry" Jekyll and Edward Hyde

Taken From: The League of Extraoridnary Gentlemen

Age: 40

Occupation: Henry Jekyll is a Doctor, a scientist and League member.
Edward Hyde is also a League member and formally Jekyll's assistant.

Physical Description: Jekyll: 6ft1, dark brown hair with mutton chops (a.k.a: big sideburns), blue eyes, pale and weedy looking. Jekyll is wearing a black suit, white shirt, gray vest, boots and always carries as silver pocket watch which he tends to play with when nervous.

Hyde: 8ft2, very short reddish blond hair, sparse facial hair, blue eyes, large and muscular. Picture a large shaved gorilla and you’re not too far off. Hyde generally wears the tatters of Jekyll’s clothes.

Personality: Jekyll: A courteous and gentle man, he is an inquisitive person who seeks answers through science. This is what made him a respected doctor but also lead to his downfall when he formulated the serum which turned him into Hyde. Jekyll is normally a reserved man and repressed due to his position as a doctor and because of the society that he lives in.

Hyde: The beast within Jekyll, Hyde is the manifestation of all the traits that Jekyll conceals within himself and his dark side. Violent, aggressive, rude and lewd. Hyde constantly attempts to take control of their body and to be the dominant personality. He despises having to co-exist with the same body as Jekyll and wants to be free and in control. Surprisingly Hyde shares Jekyll’s intelligence but his interests run into more bloody and low brow pursuits.

Skills/ Abilities: Jekyll: As a man of science and a doctor Jekyll is intelligent and will he be able to patch the members of the League and Nemo’s crew when needed. Jekyll also knows a large amount about drugs and healing plants, as well as knowing many well-to-do members of London and Paris society.

Hyde: This monster’s strength is one of his main attributes as he is viciously strong and able to cause large amounts of destruction to anything and everything in his path. It is also very hard to hurt Hyde as he can take a lot of damage before he can be stopped.

The pair can communicate with each other and do share memories.

Flaws: The delicate balance between the two personalities is a weakness for both as they are constantly at war in order for one personality to gain control. Also Jekyll is highly tempted by the release that being Hyde gives him and acts very much like a drug addict, having withdrawal symptoms. The serum has a time limit and can run out at untimely moments which will leave Jekyll in danger. Hyde’s weaknesses include his violent tendencies which he does indulge and will cause conflict with the other members. Also both are human and can be hurt/killed as such though Hyde will require more damage than Jekyll to be killed.

Brief History: The strange story of Doctor Henry Jekyll and Mister Edward Hyde begins in a mundane setting, as Jekyll had the appearances of a normal life, being born into a well off family though his mother did have a tendency to dote on him, his father was Henry’s inspiration, encouraging the young man in his pursuit of science and medicine. Even at a young age, Henry was fascinated by the dualities in life. Night and day, fire and water, good and evil. But he was naive about what true evil was and believed that his indulgences in his own pleasures and desires were evil. He was convinced that if he could separate the good and evil in man that he could rid himself of his own ‘evils’.

His naivety would cost him. Henry spent years searching and experimenting, all to create his serum which he believed would separate the good and the evil, leaving only good but nothing is that clear cut. What Henry did instead was bring forth Edward Hyde, a physical manifestation of Henry’s urges and desires. At first it was well, the urges were simple and Henry was easy to control but soon Hyde rapidly became more powerful and more out of control. His evil grew in leaps and bounds, soon resulting in brutal murders.

At this point Henry tried to find a cure to rid himself of Hyde but finding none and with the authorities on his heels, Henry fled from England to Paris where more terror ensured as Hyde was continually released by Jekyll who had become addicted to the freedom that Hyde offered him. Some time after, one night while Hyde was terrorizing the Rue Morgue, he was captured by Alan Quatermain and Tom Sawyer. Brought back to the Nautilus, Jekyll and Hyde were offered a chance to return to England in exchange for their services. Both agreed and soon found themselves apart of the League.

Jekyll attempted to regain his control but was surprised when he discovered that through the League he was offered a way to safely release Hyde and channel the monsters rage. Like th others he went traveled to Mongolia to combat Moriarty and to stop his evil from infecting the world but there was a price to be paid, which was Alan’s life. From what it seemed, they had been successful in stopping Moriarty and soon they all returned to their perspective lives. Henry and Edward returned to the safety of France, believing that their pardon was no doubt as false as the rest of Moriarty’s lies.

But without the release he had in the League, Hyde grew worse, his violent tendencies resurfacing when he brutally raped and murdered a young gypsy woman. Terrified by the thought of what Hyde would do next and haunted by what he had already done, Jekyll jumped at the chance to return to England when Nemo offered to smuggle him back into the country.
