Hello friends! Here's a bit of an update from the art vortex. I'm busily finishing up work on Tantalize: Kieren's Story, a graphic novel for Candlewick Press adapted from the book by the talented Cynthia Leitich Smith.
January's going to be completely devoted to getting every last one of the 188 pages looking ship shape before sending them off to my editors. It hasn't escaped my notice that I've allowed updating my personal sites to fall by the wayside this past year in favor of working away on my first full length graphic novel, so I thought I'd try to post some goodies here for anyone who's still hanging around.
First up, the first four pages from a Batman fan comic I started back in March, 2007 that unfortunately never got off the ground. It featured Batman, Robin, Alfred, and Poison Ivy, and that's basically all I managed to come up with.

| VLOG THE FIRST. |

last weekend was pretty busy. i recently signed up for the longest sequential commitment of my life to date, so it was good that i was able to fit in one last gasp of free air before buckling down and chaining myself to the ol' photoshop and lightbox for a month.
on saturday, neil and i went into town to check out the boston comic con with neil's pal max. the next day neil recorded a song with a couple of fellow key lemon demon members at the new england institute of art. and because i brought my camera along, you can see and hear all about the aforementioned events in this exciting first installment of my brand new VLOG!
not included in my VLOG because i was pretty pooped by that point was the spectacular comics-drawing and cheese-eating party neil and i went to at joe quinones and maris wicks' place saturday night! tons of fun people showed up to eat, draw, and merrily watch jaws on blissful mute.
here are a couple of warm up drawings i did. neil helped.

well, it's been more than a year now since i first posted making bizarros, and in the interim my interactions with friends have only grown ever more preposterously delightful. i've decided to document certain of these fleeting moments of true absurdity whenever the opportunity presents itself under the header adventures in inexplicable exchanges. expect to encounter a parade of silly sketches, a rotating cast of select characters and little to absolutely no sense. like so!

Originally posted March 2nd, 2007, Lady Gotham was the first thing I drew, sequential or otherwise, straight out of art school. As such I would do everything differently if I were to draw it again, but ain't that always the way? Here are some of the things I was thinking, reading, and seeing as I worked on this glamorous mess.

Rating/warnings: Melancholic foreboding.

artist's note: how are bizarros made?
b-bird and i were talking late last night, and wouldn't you know it, but we had a funny conversation! here is part of it. the most important and existentially ponderous part, in my opinion.
and if you don't know what the heck a bizarro is, here is the supershort version; an upside down and backwards version of superman. superman on opposite day, physically, mentally, and morally. bizarro no am speak nor think straightforwards!

this kid said the darnedest thing to me and my buddy b-bird while we were waiting in line for the new york comic-con last february. you may not be able to discern it from my crude art, but he was perhaps 13 or 14. maybe 12. possibly 8. or 17? i don't see age, but my friend assures me he seemed relatively new to this earth.
