Petition to unpatch hole in fence between bike path and Elmwood St. behind Dick's Auto Body

Petition to the city of Cambridge to remove the chain-link patch over the most-loved hole in any fence anywhere ever.

Pedestrian-friendliness takes precedence over aesthetics, in my opinion (and in those of both of my huge feet, so I get 3 votes).

"the first domino to fall" (anti-Roche Bros scare flyer)

I noticed while out walking that all the cars on Hawthorne St. just outside the Sq had anti-Roche Bros flyers stuck on their windshields.

I like the part about if you are "against turning Davis Square corporate"  and the bit about the "first domino." Since we already have a Domino's (and a Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Au Bon Pain and some other national chains I am forgetting right now), I'm not sure what they mean aside from some cliched scare nonsense. Roche Bros is a locally owned chain of supermarkets and I think they would be an asset here.

The flyer is unsigned. From one of the merchants mentioned? Is there much opposition to Roche Bros coming in?

No subject

I have no real feelings about kids. I mean, in a world with Omegle, growing your own conversational partner seems the least efficient possible thing to do with one's resources.

But I just had a conversation with a random kid that was so amazing I wish to share:

Him (fourth grader): Does water come out of cactuses?

Me: I don't know. Maybe? You can probably get water out of some kinds of cactuses if you know what you're doing. I'd have to ask the internet.

Him: I think you can.

Me: Maybe. I bet cactus juice doesn't taste very nice, though.

Him: Cowboys probably drink cactus juice.

Me: Oh?

Him: Because cowboys eat dirty stuff.

Me (internally): !!!! Is someone teaching this boy cowboy-racism?
Me (externally): Oh?

Him: Yeah. Like wine.

Bike path cut-through at Dick's Auto Body is now shut?

The hole in the chain link fence that allowed access between the bike path and the street by Dick's Auto Body is Now patched with a big piece of chain link fence.

I had sort of hoped that would not happen. It is an often used entrance to the bike path, and when someone paved the slope between the path and the street I had hopes that the hole in the fence would become an actual gate instead.

Anyone have info on what happened and why?

Expensive temporary art exhibit coming to Citizens Bank building

A lot of people were busy tonight transforming the office of Velir, on the first floor of the Citizens Bank building, into a temporary art exhibit called Consenses. (Not a typo - actually spelled that way.)

Anyone know more about it? To visit this exhibit, you have to buy a ticket for $25, which seems pricey for this neighborhood. It opens on Friday and will be there for two weeks.

Hooking up Flat Screen

We received an outrageously high quote from a major chain store to hang our flat screen TV on wall and hook up remote control in closet behind TV.  (we want to hide cord and cable box) Our electrical work is already done.  (plug on wall behind tv and plug in closet behind TV for cable box)
Does anyone know of someone (independent or small business) in our community that could do this work?  Could not find anything tagged on this.

Note to Self

Dear Self - you don't need another spinning wheel. Nor can you afford one right now, no, not even a cheap one.

I love my Ashford Kiwi, but it turns out that in stupidly hot and ridiculously humid Maryland summers it squeaks. A lot. Horribly, obnoxiously, squeak squeak, squeak, every time I treadle. No amount of oil will stop it. It just SQUEAKS, and the squeak is so distracting I can't actually spin without losing track of the rhythm of hands and feet, so I haven't spun much all summer except on hand spindles which are so much slower.

Well, it's trying to be fall, and the last week has been cool and parched dry. I sat down at my poor neglected Kiwi this morning and gave it a try. Guess what? SO MUCH LESS SQUEAK. I can actually position my foot so the squeak doesn't happen.

Humidity. It is NOT your friend, and definitely not the friend of your wooden spinning wheel. x_x

Turns out there's a brand of wheel that isn't wood - Babe wheels are the cheapest of all the options I've seen, and are made entirely of PVC pipe. They're kind of ugly right out of the box.

....and then you have the modifications people have made to them with spray paint.

*whines* NO, SELF. You don't need another wheel. You at least don't need another wheel until next summer's humidity sets in. You don't need it RIGHT NOW. No matter how much you want a steampunk wheel. x____x

Looking to borrow weird machinery/devices for video shoot

Dear people who have weird stuff. We are shooting a video this weekend that is set in an evil laboratory, so we're looking to dress the set with anything we can find that looks vaguely sciencey or techy. Think any kind of object that has dials, buttons, meters, screens, cables, switches etc. Old A/V gear, old computers, etc can work for this. This stuff does not actually have to work or be in good shape. If you have anything that fits the bill and would be willing to let us borrow it for the weekend, please comment here or email Brandy@bostoncircusguild.com  Additionally, we're also looking for actual lab ware, ie strange glass ware, Bunsen burners, stands, etc. Again, does not have to be functional. All things will only be borrowed temporarily, well taken care of, and dutifully returned. Thanks in advance!

Shobu Aikido Demonstration & Open Dojo

Shobu Aikido's open dojo week kicks off tomorrow night with a demonstration and sake tasting. Doors open at 7:30pm and the demonstration starts at 8. It's a great chance to check out what aikido is all about and drink some free sake on us.

We're then hosting a week of free classes (from Saturday 9/27 through Saturday 10/4) open to members of the community ages 15 and up. No uniform is required, but we recommend workout clothing with short sleeves and pants that cover the knees.

Class schedule is as follows (and is also available on the website):

Saturday 10:00-11:30am
Sunday 9:00-10:00am sword class, 10:00am-12 regular class
Monday-Thursday, 6:30-8:00pm

The dojo is located at 34 Allen Street, Somerville (Union Square). There is free parking both in front of the dojo and across the street, a safe place for bikes, and we are also accessible by public transportation. Nearby bus routes include the 86, 87, 91, and CT2.

We hope to see you there!

Community Path extension is sort of open now

Some time in the past few days, the Community Path extension was fully paved from Cedar Street to just beyond Lowell Street. They've taken away the chain-link gates and the "Construction Area - No Trespassing" signs at the Cedar Street end, so people are now walking (and walking their dogs) on the new pavement.

The path entrances from Maxwell's Green are still blocked by chain-link fencing, but there are gaps in the fences that appear to have been deliberately left open.

The path currently dead-ends past the Lowell Street bridge, because they haven't yet built the U-turn ramp up to the bridge. (Are they also planning to build a stairway? I can't quite tell.) There is no fence or railing yet to protect you from walking off the edge and tumbling down the hill to the railroad tracks. Also, no lighting has been installed yet, and a lot of landscaping is still in progress.
