un somnambulist, he was awake see for 85 weeks with no sleep.
today on the gritty menu we have an illustration for an article in the las vegas weekly on local racial tensions, and for pretty we are offering a sharpie and acrylic sketch of the fabulous zatanna on a piece of cardboard backing.

perhaps not the most harmonious pairing, but so it goes.











i'm hopping on a train bound for new jersey/new york environs in an hour or two. on the one hand, i am tired and traveling tired is always a bummer. on the other hand, comics. :D

Man, Zatanna's always been one of my favorite characters from the DCU--she wears a TOP HAT. You've even given her magic hair!

Also, guns are hard to draw, so props to that. Did you draw the weapons separately from the hands and cut them out? Makes for a nice, muted effect.

i'm so psyched that you both know of and like zatanna! she's not the biggest name character but she's totally charming and a ton of fun to draw.

i drew the whole lv weekly picture in one pass, hands gripping guns and pointing at each other. then i isolated the line art in layers and played around until i got that collage effect. i'm so happy you dig it!

actually i just read it last night, but i LOVED it. i'd never really considered bruce and zee before these last few issues, but it didn't take much to bring me around to the idea. there's just something kind of hopelessly great about the eternal scientist and the consummate magician getting together to make some practical magic.

i suppose so. i've always enjoyed printmaking and my inks have looked kind of archaic and intricate since practically the first time i picked up a pen, so i'm particularly conscious of the woodcut resemblance. it's not a comparison i'm displeased by, though nor is it an effect i consciously pursue.

i draw what i draws, i guess!
