Clouds gather, treetops toss and sway;
But pour us wine, an old one!
That we may turn this dreary day
To golden, yes, to golden!

decided to honor the Muses by holding our own contest...

gift certificate, third prize is a $50 gift certificate. Honorable mention prizes
may be awarded depending on the total number of entries. The poem topics
must be related to one (or more) of the Midnight Muse themes: goddesses,
faeries, myth and legend, etc. Entry fee is only $1 per poem, with no limit to

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core...

(-John Keats, 1795-1821, from "To Autumn")

And each flower and herb on Earth's dark breast
Rose from the dreams of its wintry rest.

"The grate had been removed from the wide overwhelming fireplace, to make way for a fire of wood, in the midst of which was an enormous log glowing and blazing, and sending forth a vast volume of light and heat; this I understood was the Yule-log, which the Squire was particular in having brought in and illumined on a Christmas eve, according to ancient custom." "The days are warm yet cold, clear yet hazy; the world lives but dies. And the Sun, pretending that it's not losing its grip, that none of this is happening, pours down more and more light that's all the while thinner and thinner. By All Hallow's Eve there's just nothing left of reason or fatness or gold -- there's nothing but dark music -- and the trees gasp naked and frail into November."

The face of the warm bright world is the face of a flower,
The word of the wind and the leaves that the light winds fan
As the word that quickened at first into flame, and ran,
Creative and subtle and fierce with invasive power,
Through darkness and cloud, from the breath of the one God, Pan.
(Algernon Charles Swinburne, 1837-1909)

What is lovely never dies,

News at the New Moon ~ announcing the opening of the new Midnight Muse store!

Midnight Muse is re-opening a physical store location in Cincinnati! Our new location will be a regular storefront (not a kiosk) in Tower Place Mall downtown, on the Skywalk Level between Ann Taylor and O2 Fresh.

Our official opening date is Friday, February 18, 2005. As some of you are aware, we originally intended to open a bit earlier, but the winds of fortune (combined with a relatively late decision to paint the place) have dictated otherwise. :-)

As previously mentioned in our newsletters, we had decided to move to Yellow Springs Ohio after the holidays, eventually re-opening the shop there; and that was still the case as late as late December. But we believe in being open to whatever gifts the universe sends, however unexpected . . . .

When we operated our little kiosk at Tower Place during November and December, we had no intention of staying in the mall after the holidays, and certainly no thoughts of renting an actual store. But mall management is interested in bringing unique/unusual stores to Tower Place, and at the end of our holiday kiosk sojourn, they made us an amazing offer on an empty storefront! We simply could not turn it down.

Is Yellow Springs still in our future? Possibly, depending on how the mall experience goes for us. As always, stay tuned. And if you live in or visit Cincinnati, please come see us downtown!

I lift this sumach-bough with crimson flare,

Our merchandise cart is now in operation at Tower Place Mall in downtown Cincinnati, till the end of December! We are offering jewelry, gifts, statuary, candles, incense, soaps, oils, velvet and beaded bags, plus a limited selection (due to space constraints) of books, tarot, and art. Many of our in-stock book titles are marked down 10%-35% off the cover price; come take a look!

Please note: our cart location has changed, thanks to the flexibility offered by cell phones. We are now located on the street level, overlooking the food court, near the escalators and the 4th Street entrance.

A delectable aside...Anglophiles and tea drinkers take note! Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird
I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.

And all the world to darkness turn,
Now storm and seize and make of me
A swarm of leaves from Autumn's Tree!

This past weekend we attended the twice-yearly Body-Mind-Spirit Festival in Warren MI, and enjoyed it very much as always, following up our visit to the area with our traditional trip to the marvelous Detroit Institute of Art. Though under construction/renovation, there is still plenty worth seeing at the DIA (watch for a future post on this topic).

However, the highlight of our weekend was meeting enchanted faery artist Jessica Galbreth, whose work graces one of our most popular calendars:

Jessica is every bit as lovely as her celebrated artwork, and we're delighted to have met her!

* * * * * * * * * * * Announcement: We Are Relocating! * * * * * * * * * * *

Matthew and Tess, owners of Midnight Muse, have made the decision to move from Cincinnati to Yellow Springs (home of Antioch College; east of Dayton Ohio). We are delighted to have this opportunity!

[skip this part unless you're interested in chatty details...]

Even before we met each other, we had both entertained the thought, "It would be so nice to live in a place like Yellow Springs..." Over the years, we've made several trips together to this lovely little town, and sometimes wistfully revisited the idea of relocating; but it just wasn't feasible.

However! Matthew was accepted for a telecommuting program at his workplace, with only monthly meetings to attend in Cincinnati -- and it occurred to us that living in Yellow Springs had become entirely possible. And after much thought and discussion, we have decided to do it!

In addition to its own merits, the move will put us a full hour closer to our many good friends in Columbus; it will shorten our drive to Wisteria by forty miles; and we will still be only an hour and a half from our friends and loved ones in Cincinnati.

For non-local folks and those of you who haven't visited Yellow Springs, its business district is famous for unique gift shops and galleries, and it could be a most harmonious home for a Midnight Muse storefront someday...

[Back to the regular newsletter now...]

As a result of this impending move, the Midnight Muse retail location on Madison Road in Cincinnati will be closing at the end of August. Though we aren't moving to Yellow Springs till after the holidays, a glance at our VERY busy upcoming festival schedule (see below!) made closing the shop before Autumn the best decision.

Our last day open for business at the Madison Road location will be Thursday, August 26. We will be open with our regular hours until then, and will also be open on Sunday, August 22 from 12pm-6pm.

Do we plan to re-open a physical location for Midnight Muse in Yellow Springs? We do indeed. :-) The timing for our re-opening will depend on available space combined with our festival schedule. We will be sure to notify our mailing list of any and all developments!

In the meantime: shop our website, visit our booth at the festivals...and stay tuned for information regarding a possible Midnight Muse "annex" at a Greater Cincinnati shopping centre in December...

Ask of her, the mighty mother:
Her reply puts this other
Question: What is Spring?--
Growth in every thing--

Flesh and fleece, fur and feather,
Grass and greenworld all together;
Star-eyed strawberry-breasted
Throstle above her nested

Cluster of bugle blue eggs thin
Forms and warms the life within;
And bird and blossom swell
In sod or sheath or shell.

(Gerard Manley Hopkins, 1844-1889, from 'The May Magnificat')
