10:48 pm - I just crossed the Mason-Dixon line again!
No, we didn't move (phew!) but I feel like I just made another cultural change....I am typing from our new Mac.  I would have laughed in your face if you told me I would own one of these monsters while I was in college cursing Steve Jobs every time a teacher required me to use one.  But now...I'm kinda diggin' it!

3:56 pm - Score: (me)~ 0 McLean~ infinity
Every good story starts in a garden, right? So, I was in the garden weeding since I haven't spent a really good long time weeding in about a month. I noticed there was a mildew being passed around like a cold in a classroom, so I went a while later to the local hardware store, muddied and sweaty from a few hours of herbicide.

I got out of my van and instantly recognized the man who parked his car across the aisle from mine. It was Colin Powell. "Nah, it couldn't possibly be Colin Powell. It's Wednesday morning...he'd have something more important to do, and besides which this man is skinnier than the man I see on tv." He opens the door for me and I thank him and go about my business, secure in my thinking. Finally as I have gathered all of my garden chemicals (and a package of seeds for the fall) I asked the lady at the register if it really was Colin Powell. Like a real McLean resident she responds matter of factly, "Yep. He's a regular here"

"I didn't know he lives in McLean"

No. He lives in Great Falls"

Huh...

McLean, you win again. Every time I feel like I know what's going on, you pull a stunt like this.

and just in case you were wondering, there are enough chemicals in my garden now to keep it from playing baseball at any level for a long, long time ;c)

10:30 pm - Flickrage!
I (UP? DOWN?) loaded the NY pics to my Flickr account. Plenty of pictures of Teddy Roosevelt...and CE and us too.

Thanks Lowecoffee for you hospitality! I hope we weren't too much of a bother. I know we had a blast!

Also~We finally got summer here--over 90 (and that's the humidity too ;c) and how did I celebrate it? By staying home, sick. I enjoyed the air conditioning and got a chance to veg out to 2/3 of the John Adams DVDs. I'm hoping that my way towards recovery this evening continues through the night. Since moving here I dont have a GP. Err...

current mood: sick, but a bit better

11:58 pm - Peer pressure worked
I've had a place on facebook just to be able to poke others, but now my sisters in law have convinced me to actually do something with it. So if you're interested I'll be there.

We have made some alternate pre NY plans. Mom gave me the I needhelp phone call, so the kiddos are going to my sisterin laws while I go figure things out there. Im going to have meetings with their realtor and financial advisor et al. I've already had one verbal run in with mom this morning. She was convinced that we were going to give "their" "apartment" in the basement to Js ps. Oh, it begins already. At least I'm not scared of her as I used to be. She has nothing to hold over me anymore...except for the fact that they wouldn't be coming...hey....>;c}

just an aside: Thank you Apple for the new funky cut and paste features with the update. I'm no longer jealous of the new iPhone on the street. "Modest" is just fine in my book.

Another story from the front lines: I picked up a recorder today that was full of spit. It wasn't like a goldenly sprinkled barricade, but darn close.

1:13 pm - They're giving me a load of s*#@, and I'm happy about it!

The Easter Bunny has/will deliver/ed a booty for me (and the fam) in the guise of the Home Depot.  Through the Boy's great haggling skills, we got a new  washer/dryer set (for about half price), a bunch of tile etc for the basement and a load of manure for the garden-to-be.  I'm very excited to get the garden started.  I've just been very fortunate that it's been pretty cold out because I really havent had the time to get down and dirty.  I do have watermelon seeds, zucchini seeds, carrot seeds, bush bean seeds, and 2 kinds of cucumber seeds for when the weather gets warmer (and the soil gets tilled).

KC and I were cooking fiends over spring break.  In fact, when J took Z out to the par 3, KC chose to cook.  Here are some of the things we did:

Breakfast:
Easter Cardamom bread (With the Easter eggs braided in)
Potica (supposedly my grandmother made this a lot)
Chocolate-chocolate chip challah bread

Lunch:
Cheesy potatoes
Hard Boiled eggs
Greek Salad  (thanks to Milt)
Cranberry /Jello salad (without the nuts and replacing the whole berry  cranberry sauce with the smooth sauce)
Challah (Instead of the traditional braid, I divided it into 24 balls and baked it in a large glass pie plate to make pull-apart bread, an then egg washed and sprinkled them with large crystals of sea salt)
Trader Joe's Burgundy Pepper leg of Lamb (even KC liked it...she tried it b/c she thought it was beef, and then was not disgusted  as she usually is (a la Lisa Simpson) when it is revealed its lamb)
Turkey Breast )
Tzaziki (sp?)  I had some leftover from takeout kabobs, and it was tasty with the lamb
Asparagus )
Honeybaked hamBoneless turkey breast )

Jello egg Jigglers

Dessert:
Chocolate Mousse
White cake with Chocolate filing (thanks to Milt)

With plenty of leftovers for today!! :cD

7:25 pm - Its that time of year again!

From the Chi-town Trib:

The New Peep ... ummm ... Modern Wing of the Art Institute (annapugsley)

At the opening, Renzo at his Piano entertains art admirers Pablo Peepcaso, Georgia O'Peep. They enjoy various art and artists—Peepador Dali, Frank Lloyd Peep, Mapeeppe, Paschke's Minnie Peep, Dubuffet's Standing Peep, Calder's Streetpeep. Vincent Van Peep is distraught to see it's not all about him.

There is a homeless guy that has been sitting in front of our church for months with a bright yellow sign asking for assistance.  In these past few months I've gotten to know him.  Not that I can say that we are good friends or anything, however I think I know more about his story than I do anyone else in the church.    He came from Germany with his mother and brother.   He worked in the circus until he started to have heart problems.  He lost his  job and his home and started to have to live on the generosity of others, since he couldn't do any work that required much strain on his heart .  He's recieved kindness from many churches, including ours.  Just a few weeks ago his brother was murdered, and a few churches in the area paid for the expenses of his funeral.  Most recently, one person (not sure who) pointed him to a job at the German Embassy, since German is his first language.  Fortunately for him he will be employed once his paperwork for his international driver's license is processed.  He will be employed as the Ambassador's chauffeur, making over 80,000 a year.

And the wonderful thing is that through all of his tough times he hasn't been Pollyanna, but he has kept a positive outlook on life.    He says he is planning on joining the church on Easter.

A lot of times people, me included, say that they are happy for someone.  However this time I truly am.

10:34 pm - Another way to corrupt the children in your life

This time the idea comes from Z...the boy who would not read.  He is totally into the "graphic novels" so much that I bought him a GN Bible, an he actually reads it.

However the item in the spotlight this time is Bone.  I think it is well done for a kid-appropriate GN.  Adventure with a well place punch line.    And Fone is a cutie:

And Z loves it.  Getting him to do his 20 minutes of reading is not a chore.  Love it!

9:53 pm - Bits o' randomness
I am trying to get a lot of my old good stuff on my iTunes lists.  I took out Apollo 18 (TMBG).  I was listening to the "Fingertips" section, and Z, who I previously had no idea of his location was just giggling.  He is such a fan, it is silly.  Z comes over to the couch and we are bobbing our heads and giggling.  KC comes over to see what the ruckus is about and says "What's so funny?  I think these are dumb."

It's so funny how different they are.   And how much they are different little pieces of J and me stuck together.

Speaking of that, KC and I made the pazcki on Saturday.  They were fun.  Not quite what I remembered from Chicago, but much better than grocery-store bought.  What was really fabulous was the strawberry filling.  We took frozen strawberries, blended them up and strained it, squeezed  a little lemon and added arrowroot.  We then boiled it to thicken.  After it cooled, we added sliced fresh strawberries.  Wow.  Who cared about anything else?

And then I made carrot cake last night.  I have a great recipe with carrots (of course), pineapple and coconut.  I then made a glaze flavored with pineapple-coconut rum.  I usually am not a big fan of carrot cake frosting, but this was tasty.  I only wish that I didn't have this crazy hypoglycemic sugar reaction every time I have frosting.  Thank goodness I have always enjoyed cake more than frosting.

Some of the great songs I've re-discovered:
Peaches (Presidents of the USA)
Dinner Bell (TMBG)
Pretty good year (Tori Amos)
Trying to throw your arms around the world (U2)
Tonight Tonight (Smashing Pumpkins)
People Everyday (Arrested Development)
Aerosmith's cover of the Beatles' Come Together
Hold on my heart (Genisis)
Nothing else matters (Metallica)--There is an AWESOME arrangement for this song for JR High string 4-tet
Every little thing she does is magic-- Sting
Give it away-- Red Hot Chili peppers
Ice Cream --Sarah McLachlan
Spider --TMBG (Z's new favorite song)

The kids an I also decided that TMBG's "Fingertip" "Leave me alone" from the apollo 18 album would make an AWESOME ringtone.  Check it out on itunes.  It plays in entirety on the preview.  It made us laugh.

In the joy of the job department:  In kindergarten we were doing a Hap Palmer song "colors" where the kids have to listen to the song and follow the directions.  It just has to do with kids in different groups standing up and sitting down when the sang directions are given.  Truthfully, it's not one of my favorite kiddo songs, but the kids had fun with it.  The one kid who had the best time is a boy who has a whole list of special needs.  He is technically in Kindergarten, however his educational goals inclde self-feeding, following subjects with his eyes, and vocal babbling response.  When he came in at the beginning of the school year, he was like a 4 month old in a 5 year old body.  Today he was in one of the groups with his 2 aides.  They were helping him stand up and sit down.  This boy who previously hated being moved into standing position was loving it and giggling the whole time.  Those are the moments where getting paid is secondary.

10:33 pm - music and food, food and music

For the music:  Simon and Garfunkel are going back on tour.  I haven't been to many concerts (2 in fact) but this would be a concert I would definately go, and I'd probably take the kiddos too.

For the food:  There is a dessert throwdown at J's work (I think it is just a way to get more sweets in at the office since they have been working ungodly hours;c).  One spouse made blueberry cobbler.  I'm consiering the season and thinking Polish...the article even mentions the Busy Bee...>sigh< I love Busy Bee Paczkis.

For the music:  Since J has been working late nights, I decided to take the kids to the Potomac School's musical Once on this Island.  It was good.  However interesting.  Let's just say I felt outclassed sitting in the performing arts building.  However watching a musical centered around class while feeling a little outclassed was interesting.

For the food:  (or I guess drink)  I rarely ever stray from Jasmine tea when I am in the mood for green.  However I tried some sencha and it was very tasty.  Even though it was tasty, it was odd, since the leaves had the aroma of overcooked broccoli.   But now my tea store is out and I've been looking for other brick and mortar establishments that would carry it to no avail.  They're totally like drug dealers, man.

More food:  I was proud of my V-day spread.  I got some porterhouse steaks (since V-day is known to me as the-worst-day-in-the-world-to-go-out-to-dinner), which is a rarity for me.  I'm usually too cheap to spend money on steaks, especially steaks behind glass.  But it was a good sale (that's what I tell me to keep from hyperventilating).  And they were extremely tasty and pretty.  I was especially  proud of my criss cross sear marks.  The first time I've been able to get a good sear going on both sides.  I also made some ciabatta bread.  (great recipe...and very tasty even though I didn't have time to let the starter start).  Let me tell you, it was awful to eat the leftovers--steak sandwiches on garlic-grilled ciabatta.

About the J-O-B...I have another performance this Thursday.  This time it is the 4th grade.  THey are getting dressed up in their Colonial Day costumes and sing VA-themed music.  In my other school, to my pleasure, the other teacher didn't show up again, thus making choir my responsibility.  When Sandra is in charge she lectures about behavior 75% of the time, and they sing 25% of the time.  (And when they do sing, she sings the wrong notes...)  When the kids left choir, I heard a conversation that went akin to this:  "Hey!  I actually had fun  this time" and I got hugs from 2 others.

I think that is it right now...I'll hopefully update on the Paczki.

Happy Girl Scout Thinking Day!
