My name's Matt and I'm 21. Originally from Louisiana, I'm now a senior at Arizona State University. I've been working with animals for the past few years and I think I want to make it my life's work. I have two cats, whom I love, but I hope to add a dog in a year or two. I love to read and write, though lately I haven't done much writing. I'm trying to get back into the habit, but it's a struggle to find the time.

I'm an animal welfare (not animal rights) advocate. There is so much that needs to be done to ensure the humane treatment of animals throughout the country. I'm still not sure what part I'll play in this struggle, but I know it will be rewarding beyond belief.

I'm also gay. I debated putting that on here for a while. It's not something I'm ashamed of, but neither is it the only thing that defines me. Too often, people hear of a person's sexuality and immediately assume things about that person. And, just as often, people who embrace a different sexual orientation begin to define themselves in terms of that label, as if it's a new identity.

I'm not a gay man. I'm a man, who happens to be gay.

It's a vital part of my life, one that's given me unique insights and difficult challenges. Being completely honest, if I could choose one way or the other, I would not pick this life. It's hard, it's unfair, and at times it's frightening and lonely beyond measure. But, despite what bigotry and ignorance says, this is not a choice. This is part of my life and I have chosen to make the most of it. So far, I'd say I'm doing okay.
