| Battery Is Not Charging |

My Macbook battery no longer charges. It's 9 months old and has about 35 cycles on it. It has zero charge right now and the light on the Magsafe charger stays green, but the little status icon just says "Battery is not charging."
I tried unplugging it, removing the battery, and turning the computer on while holding down the power button. Once I returned the battery, plugged it in, and turned it back on, the problem was not solved.
I think this means I need a new battery? I do not have AppleCare. Round about how much is this fix going to cost me? And where would I take it? We have an Apple store in the city, I think; should I be going there?
Since I'm broke, I'm guessing I now own a very small, quite new, and ridiciously overpriced desktop to sit beside my iMac. File this under things I'm not thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend.
Edit: So I'm an idiot - never let it be said that I don't admit this - and thought the warranty was 90 days from purchase. Please never mind me; I am an idiot, after all. :) |

Apologies if this is a nitwit question--feel free to direct me elsewhere if appropriate, but I'm not sure where to look. The hard drive on my MacBook freaked out (that's a technical term) this weekend and now won't mount, even when I start up the computer from an external drive. I'm pretty sure that if I want to get anything off it, I'll need to send it to one of those data recovery services such as DriveSavers. However, they're all insanely expensive, and some of them appear to by fly-by-night operations to boot. Any recommendations? DriveSavers is one very expensive option I've looked into. Seagate (which manufactured my HD) is another, and has the benefit of having an office that's in my area--but they've just reorganized their data recovery division and from the few reviews I could find online, aren't super organized. A third company I found online is Fields Data Recovery, but some comments I found here have me worried that they're a complete scam. Also, their customer service guy's social skills were just a little too good to be true.
So--any experiences or recommendations to offer? Thanks! |

hi guys,
i just replaced my failed hard drive for my macbook. it went smoothly enough, but now i'm trying to install the OS X discs and it gets to about 50% before i get an error telling me to check the disc for marks or fingerprints and try again. the disc is clean - it's been in the case since i used it the first time around. not sure what the problem here is, hoping someone can help! |

So, someone put out a "Yes on 8" sign in the grassy area right in front of the building entrance I work out of. Instead of going the childish route and tearing down the sign, I'd like to get a "No on 8" sign of my own instead and put that right next to it.
Does anyone know where in the West Valley I can get such a sign on short notice? I work in Chatsworth and live in Woodland Hills. |

I looked in the archive and couldn't see anything that addressed this, so my apologies if I missed something.
I have a desktop and use iCal to keep myself organized. I'm getting a laptop and would like to be able to sync my iCal on both the desktop and the laptop. They're both Macs, I think the laptop is using OS 10.5 and my desktop is using OS 10.4. (That may change soon and I'll have both running 10.5, but I'm not positive about that yet.)
The programs I've found or that have been recommended to me seem to all sync various different types of calendar programs, like iCal and Google calendar. Can any of you recommend a program for two separate computers with the same OS and the same program?
Also, I don't have a web server to host the calendar to sync it that way.
Thanks for your help!
ETA: I should add that I'm a grad student and was looking for something either really cheap or free. Have any of you used Calgoo Connect? |

My friend Jim, who suffered a stroke last year, left on a day pass Thursday afternoon from the Brooklyn nursing home at which he is being treated. Details are still sparse, but it appears that he became separated from his traveling companion on the subway, and has not been seen or heard from since that day.
While Jim retains his mental faculties and can find his way around as well as anyone, he has great difficulty speaking and some difficulty walking. More importantly, he doesn’t have the daily medication and care he needs to prevent another stroke.
We believe he had around $180 on him at the time. An avid poker player, Jim had mentioned a desire to go to Atlantic City, and it’s possible that he headed there on his own despite his need for daily medical care and monitoring.
The NYPD has been alerted, but we need to make sure the word is spread and that people all over the region are keeping an eye out for him. 2600 have put together this flyer with a toll-free hotline for the reporting of any sightings or information. You can also email Off the Hook on his whereabouts. All help is greatly appreciated.
