ON THE ROAD WITH MGMT

Sept. 25, 2008 · El Paso
Photographs by Alex Tehrani
They met as freshmen at Wesleyan University,
and formed a band built on trippy, epic songcraft.
Today, Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden
have transcended the indie-rock genre with a hit record
— the aptly titled Oracular Spectacular — and are
currently traveling the U.S. on a 12-city tour
with elder statesman Beck.

Mark Ronson runs into ex Daisy Lowe - and her mum - at Diesel party

Mark Ronson had a nightmare situation last night after agreeing to play at a gig attended by his exgirlfriend and her mum.
The music producer was at the Diesel jeans 30th birthday party at new south London club Matter.
His model ex Daisy Lowe is a poster girl for the denim brand, while her mum Pearl was with her fiancee, Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey, who also played a set.

Friends of Mark and Daisy told me it was the first time they'd met since they split last month. Must have been awkward.

French posters for Che
Two French posters for Steven Soderbergh’s two-part Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara epic are now online. The first film, The Argentine, is set in 1956 with Che (Benicio Del Toro) and a band of Castro-led Cuban exiles mobilizing an army to topple the regime of Dictator Fulgencio Batista. The second film, Guerrilla, is set in 1964 and sees Che travel to New York City to address the United Nations.

Star Jones has stuff to say, if anyone cares
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Star Jones is speaking out about how she was treated during her departure from The View in 2006.

“Those girls were hateful,” Jones says of her former co-hosts.

In a new interview in the November issue of Essence magazine, Jones also opens up about “falling into a depression” after losing her self-titled Court TV show last year; her ongoing dispute with Barbara Walters (“Barbara set me up”); and her divorce from Al Reynolds, which was finalized in September.

Responding directly to Reynolds’s infamous YouTube videos, in which he stated he “still loves” Star, Jones responds bluntly: “I’m not in love with him.”

Jones, who laid low after the abrupt cancellation of her Court TV show, is currently in talks to make a non-scripted TV comeback. The reason she’s ready to start over? A sense of renewal she says she gained after spending an Under The Tuscan Sun-style summer at an Italian villa with girlfriends, including Natalie Cole.

Posing poolside in a white dress and fireside in a slinky black number for the interview, the surprisingly svelte Jones – who dropped 160 lbs. after a 2003 gastric bypass surgery – also talks about getting back to dating.

While she doesn’t directly address her new relationship with executive chef Herb Wilson, whom she was photographed smooching in the stands at last month’s U.S. Open, she tells the magazine, “I want to fall in love again. I’m ready to love 24/7. I want happiness.”

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony Renew Their Vows in Vegas

More than four years after saying "I do", Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony secretly renewed their vows in Las Vegas early Sunday morning, PEOPLE has learned.

Witnessed by two friends, the duo renewed the vows at Caesars Palace's Forum Tower Penthouse at 3:15 a.m. Sunday after a night at Pure Nightclub, a rep for the hotel confirmed to PEOPLE. The service was officiated by Rev. Steven Smith.

"It was totally a spur of the moment thing," a source said. "They decided around 12:30 in the morning that they wanted to do it and started calling for ministers."

The renewal ceremony comes after the couple spent the previous evening club-hopping in Las Vegas and taking in a show. Most in the city believed the couple was in the city to celebrate Anthony's birthday from last month.

"(Marc) said they were in town for his birthday and they wanted to celebrate," said a source who talked to the couple.

On Friday, the couple headed to LAX Nightclub and The Bank after checking out Criss Angel's new Cirque Du Soleil show Believe – all under the guise the couple was in town celebrating Anthony's birthday from last month.

noel gallagher rants about england

There was a time when Noel Gallagher was mouthing off to the media several times a day. We assumed he’d mellowed with age – but it turns out he’s just as opinionated as ever. The gobby Oasis star did an interview for a Dutch and Belgian TV show this week – and didn’t hold back when he was asked about his home country.

"On tour I miss my girlfriend and my little boy and my daughter, I miss watching the football, I miss getting a decent cup of tea. That’s about it, other then that I don’t miss anything. You know England is not that f**king great, as anybody’ll tell you. To live in England is a f**king shithole, to be honest. Well, look at it, f**king dump! People have this romantic image of England, you know. London is a f**king dump. It’s full of crime, it’s full of fucking tourists. It’s traffic, it’s pollution. I don’t even know why I live here to be honest. I live here because the music industry is here.”

And he didn’t stop there – he then talked about his bemusement that anyone cares what he thinks.

“I often think to myself; who really gives a shit what I think anyway? But if somebody asks me a question I’ve got an opinion on pretty much everything in the world. I’m fascinated as to why people would give a shit what I think of hip hop or what I think of f**king knife crime or Amy Winehouse. Or what I think of Pete Doherty or f**king Elvis Presley or the Pope or Adolf Hitler, who f**king gives a shit for what I think? Well, I tell you why it is; because any f**king rock star you come across that you ask about anything, they come out with that f**king tripe. The same old f**king bullshit. Everything is amazing; ‘What do you think of Amy Winehouse?’ ‘Oh, she’s amazing.’ ‘What do you think of …?’. ‘Oh, it’s amazing, he’s amazing, she’s amazing, that’s amazing. Oh, poor global warming, poor polar bears.’ You know they don’t really f**king think that. I tend to say what everybody else is thinking. That’s what I like to think anyway. I think global warming is brilliant.”

Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) ~ NYT Critics' Pick

Sally Hawkins, left, with Alexis Zegerman, plays a spirited London schoolteacher in "Happy-Go-Lucky."

The Upside of Seeing the Bright Side

Published: October 10, 2008

If you know the British filmmaker Mike Leigh’s work — early and later titles like “Bleak Moments,” “Naked” and “Vera Drake” — you may find yourself watching his most recent movie, “Happy-Go-Lucky,” with mounting unease, a tinge of dread. Despite the extraordinary human parade that has passed in front of his lens, laughing and raging, yearning for love and asking for cuddles, Mr. Leigh has never been an artist for whom happy (word or idea) has been an easy fit. Life is sweet, as the title of another of his films puts it with a heart-swelling yes, but it’s also an eternal fight against doom and gloom, the soul-crushing no.

From Indie Chic to Indie, Sheesh

 Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, October 12, 2008; Page M01

Have we seen this movie before?

Opening scene: A teenager's bedroom. Walls plastered with posters for cult bands. The soundtrack plays a cut from an equally of-the-moment musician. The credits roll as if someone doodled them in a spiral notebook, in a jittery, animated font. The plot has to do with some form of family dysfunction, social transgression or adolescent self-discovery. While it reaches its darkly funny or just plain dark conclusion -- often by way of a zany, epiphany-filled road trip -- its protagonists one-up each other in pop culture references that are by turns obscure and painfully hip.
