PSP8 HEADER TUTORIAL 01 >> The Notebook.

xochristy requested a tutorial for starry effects in this header.

But I don't have the original for that header, and I don't remember what I did to make it look like that exactly. So I'll start from scratch. This tutorial teaches you how to go from this to this.

I'm asuming you all know the basics to any version of PSP to accomplish the look of this header. There's really only one step you need to know to make the sparkly star effect, but I'll do a full tutorial and show how I got the header to look like that exactly.

First start off with your base header. (Here's mine)

Duplicate it twice. Set the top one to softlight then go to effects>>artistic effects>>aged newspaper>>10 years. Then set the bottom layer to screen. It should now look like this.

Now, make a new raster layer in between the screen and softlight layer. Fill it with this gradient. (made by crumblingwalls) and set it to lighten. Then duplicate the gradient layer and mirror it. (image>>mirror) make sure it's at lighten too. You should now have this. [Keep in mind that it might look ugly on your header, so you can experiment with different gradients, settings and opacitys to get it to look the way you want.]

Now for the starry effect. For this you're going to have to use brushes. Make a new raster layer on top of everything else. I used star brushes made by inxsomniax, scribble brushes made by teh_indy, and tiny font and heart brushes by ohpaintbrush and jeweledicecream. Again, white paint and brush the stars, scribbles, etc where you want them. I used the eraser tool to erase the stars from their faces. This is pretty much what I put on the header:

Then set the raster layer that has all the brushes painted on it to dodge. You'll have to adjust the opacity to make it glow, and mine is set at 68% opacity. It now looks like this.

Now, I'm going to add text. you can make the font glow as well. Make a new raster layer, and add the text. [make the text as a new vector layer] I put "they fell in love" with 'black jack' font size 26 that you can download at www.dafont.com, and then set the font layer to 62% opacity and at dodge. Then I went to effects>>3D effects>>drop shadow to give the font a drop shadow (go figure) and put it at this setting:

Okay, I'm gonna present this tutorial to you all, asuming you already know the basics. [Basics as in how to set layer properties and where to go to adjust the brightness/contrasts and things of that nature.]

Get your base, here's mine again:

copy and paste these two gradients right after the other and set them both to lighten 100% opacity [the redish gradient first]:

Now, go down to the base and duplicate it. Bring it to the top above everything else and set it to soft light:

depending on how it looks on your icon, you may want to play around with both opacitys, or use different gradients and settings. these settings just worked with this icon.

Now, i used a few paint splatters and a star brush (all from teh_indy).

I made a new raster layer, painted the right side with the brushes in black paint, and set it too overlay at 44% opacity. You can install that brush if you want, or I'll just give you a short cut. copy and paste the image above on to your icon and set it at multipy. I don't know if this will work for everyone, depending on the icon, but you can install the brushes if you want and play around with it.

Okay, now for my favorite part. this is how I make all of my neon-sparkly icons. I used a star brush made by inxsomniax with white paint on a new raster layer, and set the layer on dodge. it's at 100% opacity, but you can adjust yours to your liking.

I don't know any short cuts for that, so your're going to have to install that brush into PSP. please don't ask me how to install brushes, because it's too complicated to explain.

Okay, I wanted it to be bolder, so I duplicated the base-softlight layer and brought it to the top. then I applied the aged newspaper effect to it. effects>>artistic effects>>aged newspaper>>10 years

Okay, I'm gonna present this tutorial to you all, asuming you already know the basics. [Basics as in how to set layer properties and where to go to adjust the brightness/contrasts and things of that nature.]

First step is to find your base. Make sure it's 98x98 or smaller instead of 100x100. I'll be using this one:

First thing we're gonna do is make her skin look porcelain-like. To do that, use the softening tool:

Use the drop arrow and make sure the tool is selected. Then go up to the tool options and make them look like this:

[this whole porcelain skin thing is totally optional by the way. It just makes her skin look better.

Use the tool on her face to get rid of any imperfections. [It comes in handy because it covers wrinkles, pimples, etc.] It's easier if you zoom in really close to see where it needs to be softened. This is what it should look like:

Next, you add the aged newspaper effect. Duplicate the layer, then go to effects>>artistic effects>>aged newspaper. Set it for 10 years, then set the icon to overlay. you should now have this:

Merge layers. Create a raster layer. Next, make a selection around a part of the picture to make borders, like so:

Go to selections>>invert selection to invert the selection. Then paint the selection white. You should have this:

Next, I used this light effect made by colorfilter:

But set it to grayscale:

Copy and paste the new grayscale image onto the icon and set it to screen. Then merge layers. You should now have this:

Next, duplicate the layer, add the same aged newspaper effect again [with the layer on overlay] but this time set the opacity on 44. You should have this:

Merge layers. I used this light effect made by innercitylights, but set it to grey scale as well:

Copy and paste it on the image and set it to screen. Then duplicate it.

Finally add a 1px sized border around the icon [which then makes the icon 100x100] Make the border a light gray. I'm using #C0C0C0. You should have this:

Okay, I'm gonna present this tutorial to you all, asuming you already know the basics. [Basics as in how to set layer properties and where to go to adjust the brightness/contrasts and things of that nature.]

Start off with your base. I'll be using this one.

Duplicate the base layer once and set it to screen. Then make a new raster layer, fill it with this gradient [made by crumblingwalls but modified by me] and set it to screen as well:

You should get this:

Next make another raster layer and fill it with this gradient, and set it to overlay:

Duplicate that layer once and set the duplicated one at 40% opacity. You should then get this:

Now make another raster layer, fill it with white, and put it as color legacy with 32% opacity to make it less shockingly pink. You should then get this:

Your layer palette should look like this at this point:

Now copy and paste this light texture [made by innercitylights onto the icon and set it at screen:

You should get this:

Now finally merge all layers. Then duplicate it once. Apply the aged newpaper effect [effects>>artistic effects>>aged newspaper] set the age at ten years, then set the layer to soft light. It should look like this:

Now add this light texture [also made by innercitylights] and set it at screen:

Then use the eraser tool to erase the sparkles from her face. It should look like this:

Now, merge all layers and make a selection around the picture, but not the whole picture, like so:

Then go to selections>>invert and it should invert the selection. Then use this brush and use white paint and paint the selections:

You should get this:

*[If you don't have that brush, you could easily make the selection on a new raster layer, and paint it with the default brush. Then set the raster layer to soft light]

Next, I merged all layers and added this tiny text brush made by ohpaintbrush on the bottom left:

First sharpen it twice. Then duplicate it, set the saturation to -40, and set it to screen. Merge all layers. The icon should now look like this:

Now time for gradients.

set it to softlight at 75% opacity.

[made by crumblingwalls] set it to color legacy at 36% opacity.

set it to overlay at 100% opacity.

merge all layers.

You should now have this:

Duplicate the icon twice and set them both to soft light. The copy and paste this texture [made by inxsomniax and set it to screen.

Then pull the screen layer down so it's below the softlight ones. You should now have this:

Copy and paste this light texture [originally made by innercitylights but I cut some off and set it to grayscale] on top of everything else and set it to screen.
