so it definitely feels like autumn! sweaters and hoodies and pants and turtlenecks and pumpkin spice lattes...

today i'm babysitting for one of my profs for a little while and then i need to start working on a paper for her class. doing hair and tomorrow more work and then going to the art music justice tour with some people from my dept which should be fun.

one of my friends and i are hoping to go mountain biking in the country in a few weeks to celebrate fall.
purple rain

...always reminds me of summer 1998 when it would play in Amanda and Alisa's head counselor room in old Riverside. The sound would filter through the walls, drift around the doors and sneak through the (many) cracks down the hallway to my room.

When you're in the kind of phase that I was in that summer (and, let's face it, for a few early teenage years) of searching desperately for who you are and what your place is, the memories come back so vividly.

What will we carry? What will stay with us? What will shine like gold when the story's told?
Alli Rogers' "The Things We Can and Cannot Keep"

So my Uncle Phil was in town yesterday and called me out on never updating the ol' LJ. I will admit that there are a variety of factors, including but not limited to:

1. me being boring
2. me not having reliable internet for the last 2.5 months
3. me being lazy
4. When i'm NOT being lazy I usually apply that energy to my music blog.

The ironic thing is that because I'm in school again you would think my procrastination would be back in full force, I guess I waste time in different ways.

Which sort of segues into the fact that I'm really enjoying school. For the most part I am really enjoying my reading and classes, this is probably why I haven't been procrastinating QUITE as much...

Seriously, the only problem is that I usually leave class still wanting to talk about whatever we've been talking about and I have no Julia, no Jimmy, no Aldridge or Dr. K to relentlessly question and explicate with. So I have found myself leaving messages like, "Kevin! How CAN perfect justice and mercy coexist?! Explain. Call me back."

I find myself immersed in conversations that sit me right back down in coffee shops in Tallahasse, on my friends' couches, in dorm basements, and church social halls. I love it.

When I weaseled my way into Aline Kalbian's grad seminar on Catholic Social Thought I found myself among only four other students: two masters', two phds, and the chair of our department who just wanted to brush up. Needless to say I was pretty much over my head and now appreciate their bemusement at my extreme enthusiasm about EVERY papal encyclical we read! But when we had the break in class
[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<a [...] ">') in entry. Needless to say I was pretty much over my head and now appreciate their bemusement at my extreme enthusiasm about EVERY papal encyclical we read! But when we had the break in class <a hfref=http://fsu.edu/~religion/students/marks.htm
">Tamara</a>, one of the PhD students who I quite liked, would go outside to my favorite spot on the steps of Dodd to smoke a cigarette. While I'm sure she was trying to decompress for a minute I would quiz her about words, concepts, whatever I didn't understand and she would thoughtfully and patiently answer my questions. Although there aren't as many things I don't understand (at least during class, some of my reading is a whole other thing...) I still find myself wishing, during breaks, that I had Tamara around to pester. :)

On which note, 310 of St Augustine Center is the new Dodd Hall Magic Room. Although it in no way can beat out the awesomeness of Dodd in general.

My annoyances so far are pretty run of the mill: people going on tangents which highlight that they haven't done the reading for class, people who only speak up in class if they think they're going to sound brilliant (which often cringingly collides with the prior annoyance), general pretentiousness, and my ongoing battle with not monopolizing classes in my typical Hermione Granger fashion. :) Scratch that because Hermione is smarter than me!

Also, sissy, I feel like this makes Morgan make more sense in some ways. I am often baffled by how much Morgan reads OUTSIDE of class. She reads about Sulpicius Rufus all day and then has time to read ridiculous vampire books?! But I feel like i understand more because when you're pretty much full time job is to READ, you feel like you should NEVER be done reading. I find myself finishing my textbooks and being like...gotta find something else to read. Not that I was ever under any delusions about how much I HAVEN'T read but when you get on a roll... I'm currently ALSO reading Ratzinger's "introduction to Christianity," the continual saga of "shape of Catholic Theology," I started "What is the What" last night (MOM!), and also have <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Render-Unto-Caesar-Catholic-Political/dp/0385522282/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221224248&sr=8-1">Archbishop Chaput's new book</a> (which caused me to get into a rather heated discussion with a fellow student and I haven't even OPENED it yet!), finally I'm still supposedly reading Wallace Stegner's book about John Wesley Powell. NOT ALLOWED TO START ANY MORE BOOKS. CRAP! I am also reading "A Celebration of Discipline." LOL.

</lj-cut>

So the internet people will be here in 45 minutes and I will finally be able to use MY COMPUTER, which isn't a big deal except I CAN'T DOWNLOAD MUSIC ON SOMEONE ELSE'S COMPUTER. I think anyone who knows me know that I have seriously itchy compulsion to get new music I don't have! Okay, that sounds really consumeristic BUT it's not like the "newest and latest" so much as new stuff I've heard of and I've been putting off making a few people mix CDs (I have a mix CD debt like 6 deep!) until I could get a few songs that I don't have right now to put on them.

Catholic Underground tomorrow night with Michael Magree, SJ- friend of Mo's School of Community!

I miss everyone. I love Nikki's new blog about her and Charlotte. Even LIZ has been updating more than me. Although Morgan has been strangely silent although I would like to commend her for updating about Christianity and politics BEFORE the mamma mia singalong. Kudos, Mo. I love you!

i'm a business! (at least financially)

so as some of you may know i've recently been attempting to take control of my personal finances and been reading up on how to be fiscally responsible and have financial independence and integrity. The book I'm currently reading is knocking down money myths (free spirits can still keep good financial records) and attempting to coach me to treat my financial life the same way any business would (i.e. not just randomly guessing).

today i worked out my liquid assets, my fixed assets, and my liabilities. it turns out my net worth is somewhere around $12,000. That actually struck me as more than I anticipated. It was sort of funny. It took less than half an hour to (casually) inventory everything I own. I guess that's not TOO surprising seeing as 99% of it fits into the back of my truck...

just found that interesting.

(a year ago i didn't even balance my checkbook)

okay, so that was a lame attempt to make a mock reference to avril lavigne.

Anyway, my point is that IT IS SO FRICKING HOT HERE. Like I am sitting in my room with the fan on SWEATING. The good news is that in about an hour it will be MUCH MUCH better and will feel AWESOME with my window and fan on. I guess it's worse inside too because the sun here is hot. Maybe that doesn't make sense but to me it does. :)

I was sad today because I feel like my life as of recent has been v. unexamined and I think having such an excess of activity post- alumni retreat kind of didn't allow space for me to process the retreat.

And, dreads tentatively scheduled for Tuesday.

I'm freaking out and blogging about the Khrusty brothers at www.lindsaylovesmusic.blogspot.com just so you know what you're being spared. :)

more last of the mohicans

just finished the book- the movie is NOTHING like the book, in fact I was like, "why did they even decide to call it "last of the mohicans"? I feel like the movie would have done well anyway, it's a good story on its own, it just happens to bear little to no resemblance of james fenimore cooper's book. Liz mentioned that she thinks NIkki read it for school and that reminded me that Nikki took a class on Western Lit which now sounds very interesting to me.

So i liked the book. And because it was nothing like the movie parts of the ending DID indeed shock me- really, I gasped out loud twice.

And then I bought the movie soundtrack. :)

noteworthy news

alec swam in the state prelims today- didn't make finals but did swim a best time. I'm really proud of him. :)

got my ipod shuffle in the mail today, going to try it out at the gym tomorrow!

was recced Misty Edwards' music via Joia via Matt Maher and she's really good.

which got me thinking- I think that when I drive to Philly I will try to stay at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City the first night. That divides my drive into an 8.5 hour first day, 10ish hour second day, and then third day with Mo from Columbus. I've wanted to check out this REAL ihop for a while now, should be interesting.

also, i think I'm going to dread my hair. so far the response has been positive. i'm going to ask my manager if it's within dress code tomorrow and if she says it is I'll probably do it as soon as I can find someone to. If not I'll probably wait and get KT and helpers to do it. woooo!

moving back towards real life...

okay, so let's make that a total of six zahn books in five days. but now i'm done. his other star wars books are prequel-esque: outbound flight and then "allegiance" (which I feel like I might have read but can't remember, just checked, yes Morgan sent it to me when it was published so I have in fact read it) and I don't feel any need to read those.

so now i'm at the smoky hill library listening to john mayer (although I listened to kelly on my way over here which was AWESOME) and attempting to write letters of recommendation for TomNeal. MUCHO privilege but that doesn't mean I know how to write the damn thing! grrrr. Here is where not getting to read your letters of rec kind of sucks, I have no idea what they are supposed to say!

After not getting my hair to do anything this morning I gave up and put a bandana on. That's right, doo rag style. I am awesome.

high school redux

between reading FIVE of timothy zahn's books in the past week (the thrawn trilogy and the hand of thrawn duology, SQUEE!), seeing Superchic[k] on Friday night, watching Lord of the Rings, and now listening to John Mayer I just feel a sense of my own retrospection.

I never thought I would miss those days, and in some ways I vehemently DON'T but I mean in hindsight my crushes and sports and grades...what *nice* things to be worried about...

hmm, in the past 36 hours I've managed to reread the entire zahn's "heir to the empire" trilogy and that's just SCARY.

me: none of your gchats were coming up!
Morgan: right
like I believe that nonsense
me: I"M SERIOUS
i'm also reading crappy fanfic
so perhaps i'd rather not be bothered
9:30 PM ;)
Morgan: you're just reading about Mara deciding whether or not to beam the baby out or deliver it naturally
HAHAHAA
me: HAHAHAHA
doest hat really happen!?!?
Morgan: IIRC, that story ends with Leia being all like "WTF Mara Jade, O RLY a baby?"
me: HAHAAH
that just made me burst out laughing
iirc?
Yesterday I went hiking at Barr Lake State Park in a tank top and shorts, was sweaty and sunburned.

Today? It snowed most of the day. IT IS MAY!

Although I have to say that it was lovely to watch the fat spring snowflakes swirl outside my Starbucks.

So I think my quest to have library cards in every major american city will be continued in the fall because I am planning on calling villanova later today to officially accept their offer which will solidify my plan to move to philadelphia in the fall and live with Susan, Beth, and Tim. SCARY! But exciting too!
