told me sorrowfully of change
in everything; told me of their own age,
and my pretty dora's youth.

some years ago i became friends via e-mail with paul who ran double entendre records in denver, colorado. he loved movies as much as i did and we often exchanged emails daily discussing our love of cinema. his favorite film one year was 'dirty pretty things' which he absolutely raved about. for whatever reason i never got around to watching it until i picked up a copy on dvd for $5 a few days ago. as del toro would say, "pure cinema magic" (yes i think he's one of the best directors shooting these days but i also think he's ridiculously adorable and want to jump on his back and shout "TORO!"), everything an american thriller often wishes it could be but it seems to take some massive ratio of utter garbage to produce a single one this good. the lead, chiwetel ejiofor, is phenomenal and i'm surprised he still has something of a pittance of a filmography. where hollywood favors actors and actresses by their appearance and substance in relation to attention span this movie creates tension out of how real humanity is revealed through it's characters. you are torn in all directions along with them, you feel exactly what they feel. no need for ridiculous chases, triumphant endings, and most importantly winners or losers; simply survivors. it is however, slightly dark, though however not in a openly gruesome way but no more than the dark sides of life we close our eyes to.

why haven't i seen you people before?
because we are the people you do not see.

i mention this all because the film is centered around the role of immigrants and what they have to do to survive under the foot of the privileged few. which also happens to be the theme of the best film of the year 'the visitor' which is coming out tomorrow. please do watch it and let me know what you think. i watched it twice in the theater and i can't wait to watch it again. mccarthy's films are some of the most humane i've seen since ozu and that is saying a lot.

i say 'best film of the year' though in spite of 'the fall' which i believe is in a league all it's own. i watched it for the fourth time with my mother who loved it somewhat to my surprise. each time i watch it i'm more inclined to believe it is one of the most beautiful films i've ever seen.

i've had a rather stressful day, i've learned that one should never get a blown tire near a gated retirement community, and right now i wish more than anything for sleep.

Why? [1:58pm October 5, 2008]

physics

[calysto]
Before I ask this question, three important caveats:
  • I don't believe in coincidences
  • I have a keen interest in physics, but zero training :(
  • I tried to google the answer to this but it has too many common search terms to be useful, so... I did try to RTFM.
With those caveats in mind, here's my question:

Why is E exactly equal to M multiplied by the square of the speed of light? Or to look at it in a way which illustrates the point of the question more keenly, why does light travel at a speed exactly equal to the square root of mass' relationship to energy?

I understand that many of nature's basic laws have no "why" they just are, but there has to be a reason for a correlation involving such a specific number.
