Things That Make Vacations Awesome:

All in all Pennsic was waaay better than last year. I think it's because I was there for a week instead of 4 days. Also, I did Pennsic my own way, and did not try to make myself enjoy the party scene there (which is generally a bit over the top for me to be comfortable). Learning English country dancing was a lot of fun, despite the fact that our teacher was a super nerd. I did not know that dance nerds could exist. But oh, they do.
The best part was definitely the fencing, though. On Tuesday we all went and got equipment, and were trying to figure out how to get into the stabbing people scene without getting in trouble, since technically we weren't qualified to fight. Halfway through Wednesday Graham and I just happened to ask just the right person how to put the safety tips on our swords - one second she was telling us to use electrical tape, and the next we found ourselves on the field getting introduced to a bunch of the best fencers and getting a play by play on the Championship Tourney that was going on. The next day we got lessons from a bunch of awesome people, including several that practice in Boston twice a week.
Hopefully we can stick with it. It is a lot of fun, even if I have to unlearn a lot of habits from foil fencing in high school (you can use your offhand to parry, and attack everywhere, not just the torso. And there are THREE DIMENSIONS. Who knew?)

If I actually went to every sport like thing I'm supposed to, I would be unstoppable. I won't, cause I actually like hanging out with people every once in a while. But the thought is there!
Monday - Kung Fu; Tuesday - Soccer; Wednesday - Kung Fu; Thursday - Fencing; Friday - Kung Fu; Saturday - Kung Fu; Sunday - Soccer and Fencing.

Pure craziness!
Also, I am bored, thus the random LJ post. I should be catching up on sleep, but for once in my life, sleep eludes me. I don't know how to deal with this!

Anyway...
BMNs are awesome. I am sad that I have only ever made it to two of them. They have climbed high in my priorities list, though, so that number will increase soon. Perhaps at a rate of about once a month. Also, good job to (almost) everyone there for knowing whose side you should be on in the battle that ensued. The rest of you, I'm sure you'll learn soon enough.
Girls' Night Out is also awesome. If there was ever a group of women I was confident walking the streets of Hartford with, it's Karen, Jolene, Meg, Angela, and WP. We need to do this again, with more girls. Or even a repeat of the first one, with Thai food and card games. Larp season is almost over, so get on it!

On another note, I have officially gotten rid of Poop Cat. She was too much, and on Thursday I brought her to a very nice shelter in Boston. The cats there all of kitty condos, and a lot of them get to hang out in rooms together with squishy chairs and hanging cat beds and crazy things like that. I am sad that she is gone, but it is a major relief. I should never have taken her in in the first place. Now is not a time for Whitney to have pets (especially incontinent ones). So I shall have to live vicariously through Sternbergia. But one day! Kittens and lizards everywhere!

So.
About a month and a half ago, one of my coworkers had to move to St. Louis. Family stuff, I think.
He posted on the company newsgroups about the fact that he couldn't bring his cat with him, and if anyone was willing to take her in, that would be wonderful. She was orange and white and a sweetie of epic proportions. She was also twelve - which made going to a shelter a bad idea.
I, of course, could not say no to such a thing. My mother brought me up well. Not to mention that she was orange and white.

Now, all of the above things are absolutely true. She is the sweetest cat in the world. She also has an epic case a diarrhea. She had it nonstop for six months before we got her. The previous owner warned us (my roommate and I) about the problem, but made it sound like a health thing where she occasionally didn't make it to the litter box.

She NEVER. EVER. poops in the litter box. She'll poop right outside it. Or maybe in the hall outside the bathroom. Usually not in the living room or our bedrooms, thankfully. But NOT THE LITTERBOX.
I have brought her to the vet twice since getting her, and she is now on her fourth medicine.

CATS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE EASY!

....but she's cute.

I finally (finally!) went back out and found a new martial arts school. I was slow about it, with crunch and the whole cult-oops-thing the occurred back in the summer, but this time it may actually work out.
I'm starting Kung Fu...it's my first Chinese martial art, but so far it doesn't seem too different from what I'm used to. I think that's partially because the style of karate I did wasn't as hard as most forms. One big difference is that there are a lot of big sweeping gestures, which I think is good for me since my right arm is now super sore...and at the very least, they're fun! Some of the forms are very dance-like, which, again, seems like a lot of fun. The actual self defense I've seen if very simple (although effective), but that's not really why I'm there right now anyway, so I don't mind.
It's a fairly relaxed school - they suggest you come to class in what you actually sleep in, as opposed to what they slept in in Asia several hundred years ago. There's joking around with the instructors, who seem pretty cool. But they also actually correct my problems, which I haven't gotten in forever and a day. I have super shitty posture. Which I knew, and have been trying to correct. But apparently I'm failing horribly.

Anyway, I am pleased, and I really hope it works out.
Also, I was bored and excited about hitting things. This equals an lj entry!

P.S. I am now at 9 and 2 halves books. Although the two halves don't count.

WP loves my lj more than I do!

And since I'm writing an entry anyways, I suppose I'll give the world an update on my life. Since everyone wants to know about that...
I've been living in Boston and working at Harmonix (of Guitar Hero fame). We just finished crunching for a new game called Rock Band. Crunching sucks. A lot. I've missed all of the larping so far this season due to it, but I will be returning now, and I am incredibly happy about that. See, my life is super exciting!

As an aside, I am looking for a decent martial arts place to go to in the Cambridge area. I tried one out, until they were all "In order to continue past these first two months, you must give us $5000." ....so I got suspicious, and looked them up. Apparently they were totally a cult, back in the day. Now I think they're more of just a con. Oops.
I'm going to try not to do that again, so let me know if you know a place. I'm pretty open to learning most styles. After months of doing nothing but sitting on my ass for eleven hours a day I'd like one that will whip me into shape, though :).

Oo, oo, I almost forgot. A few weeks ago (same as the moving, actually), a random tiny lizard was found running across the floor at the office. It almost got squished as a centipede, but thankfully was saved. And now he is mine! He's a brown anole, and barely two inches long. His name is Watson, after one of the programs we use all the time in QA. If I had a decent camera I would get you pictures of him, but for now you'll just have to imagine the tiniest lizard in the world. Do it.

Boston

So, I recently move up to Boston to work for Harmonix (Gaming company - best known for Guitar Hero). I've been here for a week now, and it was fine, but I'm starting to think it was a terrible idea.
I'm living with a couple friends up here, which has been fine. But today their rabbit was being all crazy and attacking people. It bit Heather. She washed it, but it's still all red and stuff. I've never seen gangrene before, but if I didn't know better I would swear that's what it looks like. She's also been a bit odd today. Cranky and kind of spacey. But maybe she's just got mood swings going on. I don't know.
That has nothing on the people I'm working with, though. I'm working in QA, and I thought that they were filled with pretty awesome people. But, well, I'm not so sure anymore. Most of them were also a bit weird today. The ones that were there...we found Bill's journal. It was...covered in blood. It was talking about zombies but...well, that must be a joke, right?
I'm back at the apartment now, and Dan and Heather aren't home yet. I'm not really sure what to do. Central Square was full of people acting funny. I actually had to punch a couple out of my way to get back here. And I saw a couple others...I don't know what they were doing. But they certainly seemed to be eating each other. Things aren't that bad in Boston. When I got back here I spent a half hour in the bathroom, just throwing up. Now I need to figure out how to get back to CT. It must be fine there....right? It's just these crazy city folk who do these things?
Someone's knocking on the door. I think Heather's home from work. I hope that being away from the stress there gets her in a better mood.

Of a more...usable variety this time. Does anybody know of/have a safe place to park a car for a weekend that is as close to rt 91 as possible?
I'm supposed to meet some people on their way to New Jersey, and they don't know CT at all, and I also want my pretty new car to stay nice and whole. The only places I really know anything about 91 are near Hartford and New Haven...and those inherently not safe places for my car. I suppose I could take a less pretty car, on pain of death for whoever uses mine for the weekend. But, in a less rambly sort of way: I need a place to store a car for a weekend near 91.

Edit: Thanks to everyone who offered places...I'm probably going to leave it in the commuter lot so that my friends don't have to worry about navigating CT at all. ....and procrastinating. Answers to that friend-quiz:

1.
I lived in East Haddam until I was something nearing two years old. I barely remember it, but it totally happened.
2.
My major is Computer Science. I think only one person failed at that.
3.
I didn't do Tae Kwon Do until my sophomore year of college, and Aikido started just this past September. Kempo is significantly different from Kenpo, believe it or not. The first I did for a semester my sophomore year, and the other I've been doing off and on since I was 6-ish.
4.
I was Athena. She's also probably my favorite Greek god, although Artemis is pretty cool, too. I think the only person who had any reason to actually know that was Phillipe.
5.
I play the saxophone, and have since 4th grade. Definitely not the flute.
6.
In the summer before 8th grade Paige peer pressured me into joining her soccer team, and I played until sophomore year, when it was a choice between drama or soccer. Since I was never very good at soccer, drama won out.
7.
I heart on the 3 Musketeers, and their chocolatey simplicity.
8.
I only ever had to use VB back in high school, but I hated it with a burning passion, and made my teacher go back to learning Pascal. Anything you can do in VB you can do better somewhere else.
9.
Although I have worked at most of those places, I worked at Pratt & Whitney this past summer as an intern. Merrill Lynch I have never worked at. It's financial institution that I have to deal with a lot, though.
10.
When I was little and my Dad cooked mushrooms, the smell almost made me nauseous. It's not as bad anymore, but I still stay away from them as much as I can.
11.
My Mom's name was Jan. More people than I expected knew that one.
12.
Not counting Oscar(because I'm stupid) there have been seven cats in my lifetime:Smoke(died before we moved), Jack(who pees in Chuck's bag), Cain, Rascal(the lich), Deckster, Midnight, and Misfit.
13.
Spot was a long lasting hermit crab. He molted, and my Mom thought that he had died, so his cage sat in a corner of the dining room for several months before I pulled the cage out to hold some bug that I had found. We then discovered that one of shells was moving around, and Spot was still alive. Several months later he molted again, only to have my Mom make the same mistake. This time Spot was not so fortunate. I found him in petrified form another half year or so down the road. Mom felt terrible.

Now, I know that Apples to Apples is a game that is essentially made to play on stereotypes.
That doesn't make it better when it's glaringly obvious that the people playing the game fully believe those stereotypes. Oddly enough the two biggest ones that came up were skinheads and feminists. Huh.

There was a lot more to this post, but it was mostly incoherent and poorly written rambling. There are people who get down the finer points of what's wrong with the world way better than I can, so I'll let them do that.

I have decided that once I live in one place all year round, and can properly care for an animal, I am getting myself a lizard.
Now, the question is, what kind do I get?
So far I have narrowed it down to a bearded dragon, leopard gecko, or crested gecko. All three are (supposedly) relatively easy to take care of and are naturally tame.
The geckos are nocturnal, which means I wouldn't need to get a UV light for the cage. That also means that, generally speaking, they will have an opposite schedule to me - which to me kind of defeats the purpose of a pet. They are relatively small (less than a foot, fully grown) so I won't have to worry about space. The two differences between the geckos - besides what they look like - is price and living arrangements. Leopard geckos are always cheap, and live on the ground. Crested geckos are arboreal and prices seem to range from $50 - $350. Obviously, I would be getting a 'reject' gecko on the lower end of that. Crested geckos are nice because they're omnivorous instead of carnivorous. I'd still need insects, but I can also feed them fruit and veggies, and a lot of people feed them baby food.
Bearded dragons can get up to about two feet long, and are supposed to have 40 gallon cages as adults. So, with this choice, I'd have to figure out where to put it. They seem to be about $50-$100. They're diurnal and carnivorous, but quite sociable. If I ever decided to get another, I could keep them together, which is more difficult with geckos (the males like to eat each other). I like the size of the dragons, but the space could be an issue.
What I really fell in love with were the baby chameleons at the pet store. Unfortunately, I discovered that apparently chameleons are almost always arrogant bastards who just want to be left alone. And I know that I am not capable of doing that. What's a pet you can't play with?
So, what should I get? Are there any lizards of awesomeness that I'm overlooking?
I have three months to figure this out, but since I went to the pet store it's been on my mind.

Fifty Books a Year

I learned about this from commonboy and starlaiste and I think it sounds like a plan...More just to see how close I get than anything else. I probably won't actually do anything with the community - just mention things on here. So, I may actually update.
I can start with the whole thing now, even.
I finished Eats, Shoots & Leaves yesterday, and House of Leaves today. I like Leaves. Leaves Leaves Leaves.
I don't know if House of Leaves should count as a whole book, since I started it awhile ago, but we'll see. Perhaps it depends on if I'm half a book away from fifty at midnight on December 31st.
So, yeah. 1.5/50.

Some thoughts...

Ever since commonboy did his whole post on feminist sci fi blogs, I have found myself entranced. Waking up to a kind of new light, and spending far more time than I really have to spare on perusing those and other blogs. Recently on Feminist SF - The Blog! there was a link to what the poster liked to call a "lying piece of bigotry" written by Orson Scott Card.
Now, I have always enjoyed his books. Particularly Ender's Game, obviously, but even some of his more religious based books are generally quite entertaining, and can give you another point of view to look from. And even with his Mormon background, I had always gotten the impression, through his work, that he was relatively openminded. However, the essay linked to above changes that opinion. Yonmei over at Feminist SF tears him apart better than I ever could, but for the most part I completely agree with her.
Perhaps Mr. Card could have had some point if all he said was "Look, I'm a Mormon. In my very strong religious views, marriage and family are very particular things. I would love to make some kind of seperation. That's all, bye!" he might have gotten something from me. Freedom of religion is still freedom of religion, after all. But he goes far beyond it in to all sorts of realms better left alone, and tries to show himself as significantly more ignorant than I really think he is. It's all very unfortunate, really.

Yes it's been awhile. No, you don't get to have any kind of update on my life. You mostly get a rant, because I'm angry at people.

Who hits a cat and then leaves it there? Really?

I was driving to the store from Phillipe's to get some ice cream and passed an orange lump in the orange. I made a note of it to stop on the way back. So, a couple minutes later, I'm back. I pull up beside it - and it's a cat, just like I'd feared. It kind of twitched at me, which gave me some hope (It was still alive, right?) until I realized that it was essentially choking on it's own blood. It had no visible wounds, but was bleeding from the mouth - internal injuries. Crap. So I walk up to the closest house. A guy opens the door before I even get there. I ask if he has an orange cat, and he says yes. I bring him to that cat, and his only real response is "Shit."
We agree that there is probably not much to be done. Just trying to move that cat off the road causes it obvious agony, and I think knocked it unconscious. If I were a different person, I may have suggested mercy killing, but I have no ability in that area, certainly not to a cat. That guy thanked me for bringing it to his attention, and I went on my way.

The real point of this post...if you hit an animal that obviously belongs to someone, just own up to it for god's sake. Why the hell would you hit and then just leave it there, when maybe, if you go find someone who owns the thing, you can save it? Personally, I'd also offer to pay for any vet bills that arise, but just having the guts to tell the person that you're the one who hit the pet and you're sorry...that's something.

I don't really know who reads this thing who fits into the above group, but I do know that back in high school I had many many friends who desperately wanted to try LARPing and failed to do so.
So, if you're one of those people go to http://www.magestry.com. If you know one of those people, tell them to go there. It's a little bit of a drive (near Northampton, MA) but the first game is free. That's right, kids. Free. So you should finally get off your asses and give it an actual try. You know who you are.
