Top 5s: The Return

Top Five TV Shows and Their Top Five Episodes

5

Generally, I don't think it's fair to compare long-running shows with one season shows. I mean, if VM had only lasted one season it's not too far-fetched to think it would have ended up in the top spot on this list (SPOILER ALERT: it didn't). However, there are two shows that I love so much that I'm at least willing to let them share the number five spot.

First up: Firefly!

Top Five Firefly Episodes

5. Shindig

4. Serenity

3. Trash

2. Objects in Space

1. Out of Gas

And sharing the number 5 spot with Firefly is....Wonderfalls! (Like the icon didn't give that one away!)

Top Five Wonderfalls Episodes

5. Cocktail Bunny

4. Caged Bird

3. Wax Lion

2. Crime Dog

1. Karma Chameleon

Top Five Guilty Pleasure Movies.

With this one I can totally cheat and reuse 80% of an old picspam, but I've been wanting to switch out The Truth About Cats and Dogs for a while now, so this is my chance!

5. Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken

4. Girls Just Want to Have Fun

3. Night of the Comet
NEW ADDITION!

Screencaps!

2. Dirty Dancing

1. The Cutting Edge

In non-Top Five news, there are some icons that I see people use, and I always go "you keep using that icon, I do not think it means what you think it means" to myself. In particular, I'm talking about icons made from these two images:

In this case, I'm sure there are people who just don't care who's in the icon (because the ones I've seen are undeniably good), but I'm pretty sure there's a subset of users who think it's Logan. It's not, it's this guy:

In this case, I guess I'm just flabbergasted that people would even consider using this as a pro-Scooby icon when I think it's about as far from pro-Scooby as you can get. That hug is all about how far apart they are at that very moment, and no one can ever convince me that isn't the case. And why so many icon-makers use that cap when there's another one that's very similar and an ACTUAL good moment, I'll never know.

(Basically, the top cap is all about "will he push her over the edge or won't he?)(From Primeval.)

I think my icon is from the actual good moment!! Whew.

That Firefly picspam is terribly, terribly pretty.

And [info]_jems_! I did not know your favorite episode of Wonderfalls is "Karma Chameleon"! That episode cleared my sinuses! Literally! I love it so, and I feel that is underappreciated.

Night of the Comet is great fun. Now have you seen Night of the Creeps?

So many people have the bad moment and it drives me batty.

Firefly is terribly, terribly pretty, hence the prettiness of the picspam.

I didn't either! I don't think I've actually sat down and ordered them before, but it turns out, that's the one I love the best. I'm surprised Crime Dog ended up so high on the list because the first time I saw it I wasn't too impressed, but it's grown on me with every rewatch.

Nope, haven't seen Night of the Creeps.

I honestly don't remember who "that guy" is in that VM cap. Is it from S3? Because I gave up on the show mid S3. Otherwise I feel like a bad (former) fan.

Your picspams of Firefly and Wonderfalls make me want to rewatch them right now! I haven't watched either in probably over a year, if not more. It's so weird seeing Christina Hendricks as YoSaffBridge now! And oh, Lee Pace in the doofy hat. Also, those two caps of Jaye and Aaron making the exact same face are PERFECT. They really cast that show quite well, in terms of family resemblance.

I look forward to the rest of your top five shows!

Yep. From the show's only two-episode mystery!

Mmm, Firefly. Mmm, Wonderfalls. Two shows I really want to rewatch, even if I did just recently do the Wonderfalls watch-through with my sister.

I think the cap from Primeval is better anyway? Then again I suppose it's because I remember the context. That scene just warms the cockles of my heart, I suppose.

And LOL at I'm pretty sure there's a subset of users who think it's Logan because wow. Great whoops there.

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 13:14:30 UTC 3 years ago

Me too! And I think I should rewatch Firefly soon because I'm down to just two icons! That's not right.

I have such a hard time separating an image from the events going on around it, so using scenes with text that feels emotionally false is just icky to me.

I love your cap choices for Firefly. Just looking at them has me wanting to put the dvds in.

As to that Buffy screencap, it is a heartbreaking moment, one of distance with such a strong longing to be close. I think a lot of icon-makers use it because the colors are so nice (especially in full view rather than the close up shot above), and their expressions are so moving.

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 13:19:05 UTC 3 years ago

It breaks my heart that there weren't more Firefly episodes. If a top five list can consist of those episodes and there were only fourteen in all? Just imagine if we'd gotten several seasons.

I can't help but feel that that Buffy moment feels completely false. It's Xander and Willow taking Buffy at face value because they don't want even a hint of them possibly being wrong, and Buffy knowing this and therefore hiding her pain because she knows that they can't help her anyway - she's always supposed to be the strong one, not them.

September 15 2008, 18:27:35 UTC 3 years ago

I ADORE all FIVE of your guilty pleasure movies and could think of none better.

I defend my use of *see icon* because I PRETEND it's Logan due ENTIRELY to my love of this FAKE season four opening credit sequence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cXzv4MGBxk) where it may or may not be implied that it is indeed Logan, but actually sort of FEELS like it COULD be him in the future... and that's really all that matters to me these days, since season four is just a HUGE NOT and I've made up a GREAT story in my head as to how things went, which includes the two of them possibly reuniting on a cliff somewhere and dealing with all their issues.

Yes, I'm entirely aware of my LAME and just EMBRACE IT!

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 13:21:22 UTC 3 years ago

Considering I can't even embrace icons where the emotions feel untrue, embracing one where the people in it aren't who you think they are is just too much. But as long as you're aware and happy with your choice, I can't fault you for wanting to imagine a season 4 where things were less sucky.

Night of the Comet, woooooooo! And Girls Just Want to Have Fun, such an 80s classic.

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 13:27:31 UTC 3 years ago

Practically all of them are 80s classics! Because back then I would become ridiculously obsessed with movies, and from the 90s on I became ridiculously obsessed with TV shows.

September 15 2008, 18:33:32 UTC 3 years ago

Um, now I want to rewatch Wonderfalls and I soooo don't have time. I loved the pretty, pretty picspam for both of your top 5 shows.

Night of the Comet! Now, that is a cheesy movie that doesn't get nearly enough love. It has zombies, shopping, and rockin' 80s montages.

That hug is all about how far apart they are at that very moment, and no one can ever convince me that isn't the case.

Yeah, exactly. I see that icon all the time and have never been able to figure out why people are using this scene of Buffy being desperately sad and Willow blindly accepting the gratitude that she thinks she's owed to memorialize Scooby solidarity. There are plenty of great Scooby scenes that illustrate their friendship that could be iconned, but this isn't one of them.

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 13:29:52 UTC 3 years ago

I think I could probably find the time, but the problem is that it would delay me finishing the top five even more, and this is already taking AGES.

The shopping montage is the best! Unfortunately, it's also very dark, so it's not so much fun to picspam.

The Scooby hug feels false and wrong and just bad on every level, so using it as a feel-good icon? Yeah, not understanding that choice at all.

September 15 2008, 18:34:57 UTC 3 years ago

the thing with Firefly was that each episode was so well done that it felt like you were watching a mini-movie. I can still watch all the episode and enjoy them just as much as I did the first time I saw them

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 13:33:10 UTC 3 years ago

Yeah, the show really is perfect. In a way, I hate that we never got to see more episodes, but in another way, I'm glad it didn't get a chance to possibly crash and burn.

I have yet to watch Firefly or Wonderfalls, but considering how short they are and how much people rave about them, I really should get on it. LOL

And Dirty Dancing is definitely on my list of guilty pleasure movies. :D

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 13:34:56 UTC 3 years ago

You really should!

Dirty Dancing is just so...cheesy. It can't be anything but a guilty pleasure movie, and I think that's been the case ever since it came out.

September 15 2008, 19:31:18 UTC 3 years ago

It took me so long to actually watch Firefly even after I had bought the DVDs but I'm so glad I did now because it's just... so... good! J'adore!

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 13:37:23 UTC 3 years ago

I think it took a lot of people a long time to warm up to just the idea of the show. But once you give it a try, you can see that it works. Okay, so maybe the world building is a bit nonsensical, but the characters work so well that I just don't care.

[info]swsa

September 15 2008, 19:39:15 UTC 3 years ago

Yeah, totally agree on the Afterlife icon. It's all about Buffy not being able to be honest with her friends, and her friends even kind of knowing it, but being content to pretend everything's great. One of the worst Scooby moments in the entire series really, as at least during their fighting moments, they're being honest with each other.

Man, I haven't watched Night of the Comet in like 10 years. And even THEN it was so hilariously dated and goofy and I only found out about because of my older roommate remembering it from her Jr. High days. I totally want to rewatch now.

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 13:40:01 UTC 3 years ago Edited:  September 16 2008, 13:41:10 UTC

And also about her continuing to protect them, even after they've harmed her in the worst possible way. Totally agree, one of the worst moments ever.

I used to watch it every time it came on HBO in the 80s. And that was A LOT. I'm not usually a fan of horror movies (they don't scare me, and so what's the point?), but I love Night of the Comet.

1. The more I think about it, the more I feel that Out of Gas is my very favorite TV episode EVER. [Or maybe it's just that I watched it again a few days ago and it's very fresh on my mind.

2. I really need to watch Wonderfalls again!

3. I've watched Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken for the very first time when I was at my mother's house last month. I... cringed a lot? Hee. [Other than that, the only movie in your guilty pleasure list that I've seen is The Cutting Edge. I pretty much skipped the '80s, movie-wise. *g*]

4. OH MY GOD THANK YOU for the Scooby cap alert. Every time I see an icon with the Afterlife hug I just wanna rescue Buffy from Xander and Willow. ACK!

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 17:49:10 UTC 3 years ago

1. I think I have a few contenders there, but the difference is that Out of Gas has all the elements: a unique look, a storytelling twist, great content and beloved characters.

2. I think we all do!

3. Haha! There's a reason they're guilty pleasures. The level of embarrassment to admit you actually watched a movie multiple times because you enjoy it so much.

4. Ugh! I can't imagine how anyone can use that cap for ANYTHING, never mind as a good moment between the three.

Did I miss the other part or were there not supposed to be 5 TV shows and you only put up #5? Hehehe.

I'm with you on the sharing of Wonderfalls and Firefly (I actually like Wonderfalls better, but they're both high up there on my lists.)

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 17:54:20 UTC 3 years ago

Nah, I put in the LJ cut that it was only number five. Since the top five request meant six picspams in one, I decided to do a countdown with one show (or in this case, two shows) per post.

I feel so much affection for these shows, in a way it's hard to do with multiple season shows, because inevitably there is baggage and hard feelings and badness at some point.

September 16 2008, 01:16:22 UTC 3 years ago

Haha, I see that VM icon a lot, and I always think the same thing! NOT Logan, guys! I may have hated S3, but even I remember that! Too bad it's such a gorgeous shot.

Also, your top 5 Firefly episodes (especially #2 and #1, in that same order) are totally the same as mine. Sigh. Love.

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 17:57:14 UTC 3 years ago

I think some people quit watching before then? Or just didn't care to remember things at that point?

OoG and OiS are pretty much unbeatable. I think that in a list of top ten episodes EVER, both of them would probably make it on there.

"Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken" is an absolute favorite of mine - I adore that movie so. And Sonora Webster-Carver is a hero to me. I love the don't-let-anyone-stand-in-the-way-of-your-dreams message in that movie. LOVE.

[info]_jems_

September 16 2008, 18:01:05 UTC 3 years ago

Every other time I've ever posted about that movie, people come out of the woodwork screaming "I didn't know anyone else even knew of that film!". This time they've all been mysteriously absent. Possibly because my numerous postings about it have made them realize that in fandom, at least, we all just share the one hive mind.

For me it's Pride & Prejudice (not counting TV shows, that is). But I've still seen The Cutting Edge more times because I've had it on tape since the dawn of time. Such a great movie that it's almost a shame to put it on a guilty pleasures list.
