Canada rocks! Prison Break? Not so much.
I just feel that I have to chime in on Prison Break happenings, even though I'm not watching it this season. I read this article on tvguide.com, and this is how they sum it up:

"So, there you have it. Michael and Sara's love story was cut short over a frakkin' contract dispute."

And you know what? That's not at all what I got from that article. What I got was that THEY WERE PLANNING TO KILL HER ANYWAY. I, for one, am actually glad that Sarah Wayne Callies decided not to come back, since it means I won't have to sit through a few episodes of having her back AND THEN HAVE HER DIE ANYWAY!

I really don't get how they can kill off their only female character. Just... What are they thinking?!

Ugh!

Pushing Daisies

If possible, I loved the second episode MORE than the pilot (and don't even get me started on how long it took me to get the whole "Pie-lette" thing). Probably because you could see what the episodes would be like, and they're exactly like the pilot. And that's exactly what I want!

I know a lot of people don't like voiceovers/narration, but I've never really minded them much. As long as they're not enforcing The Stupid onscreen, but even then I tend to think that the problem is with the show, not the narration. But with this show the narration is essential, at least for me. It's what makes it seem that much more like a fairy tale, and the narrator they hired is perfect for the part.

Things I didn't love:

Proximity

Anytime those two got too close I almost had a heart attack.

Things I loved include, but are not limited to:

Emerson knitting!

Emerson!FAAAACE!

Olive going SPLAT!

Musical interludes!

CHEESE!

Chuck being pretty

Dandelions!

Clever use of plastic dividers

Cuteness!

Even though I don't really care all that much about Ned and Chuck as a couple, this episode reassured me that I find them cute, and they're not going to stretch it out for the sake of stretching it out. The kissing through the suits? Adorable. As was the handholding.

If they did this for the entire first season (until Chuck inevitably finds out about her father towards the end), I'll enjoy it. And if it goes into an angst-filled season 2, that's fine and dandy too. However, past that I really can't see it, because if there's no chance whatsoever of full-on MACKING, then what's the point? ;-)

THIS SHOW!

The caps are uploaded here.

I still don't get the "pie-lette" thing, in so far as there being something to "get". I thought it was just an episode title. Do explain if it's more though :P

I can't wait to watch the episode tonight. Where did this one air? Canada or the UK?

If you look at the top right cap, when he's clearing the dishes, you'll see the moment when I nearly had that heart attack. DON'T DO THAT!

You know, most of the shows that I love and adore right now are comedies, so that's not really all that depressing, but there's something especially uplifting about this show.

EXACTLY. I'd be pissed if I were her, too. I mean, of course there's a selfish side of me that would have rather seen it go down a million other ways than the way they ended up killing her off, but the point is they should never have even CONSIDERED killing her off in the first place! I really do believe that FOX has massively underestimated how much this will hurt their ratings. They're in for a big surprise.

I hope the show tanks big time. Sometimes people really do tune in for a female character (I know I wouldn't have put up with the show for even a fraction of the time I did if it wasn't for Sara. Near the end there, she was the ONLY one I cared about).

That's how I interpreted the article, too. If they couldn't have her for the full 22, they were going to kill her off. I was a casual fan of the show but I feel so badly for the big fans of her character. That character was sorely needed on the show and I'm not sure how it'll manage without her POV.

It's going to be hard for me to avoid these early PD posts on Wednesdays! :) I MUST BE STRONG.

I didn't read it quite like that, only that they weren't interested in having her for the full 22, which was the only way they could renew her current contract, and she refused to sign on to whatever they were proposing to do with her character (or possibly for personal reasons, but in the end I don't really care).

Any particular reason you must be strong? =)

This is a beautiful (albeit the dandelion caps are just creepy out of context) show and I'm wondering why I'm not watching it. Well, it is on tonight so I guess I might. Unfortunately, I'm a CW person on Wednesdays with ANTM and Gossip Girl and though Gossip Girl got picked up for a full season I might have been the only one who didn't feel episode three. I guess I'll see, tonight.

But very nice pic spam.

And I read that very same article. Either way she was biting the big one. I don't even watch PB and yet I found this semi-ridiculous. The creator started out praising the actress and then finally admitted she might not have been happy there and then went into the killing her process.

Uhm, k.

The show is GORGEOUS! And I don't see the dandelion as being creepy, so I'll just have to take your word for it. =)

Since I don't live in the States, I don't have to worry about conflicts, but in this case there would still be no contest for me because ANTM started to annoy me to no end in the sixth season, and I haven't even cared enough to download Gossip Girl.

If they had renewed her current contract (for all 22 episodes) I guess they could have forced her to work and not have to kill her, but I can see why that would not be an attractive option. But saying they would have killed her either way? Man, talk about morons. Even if that were the case, why not let the fans arrive at their own conclusions, wherein at least some would probably think the actress was asking for too much money and laid the blame squarely on her shoulders? Then maybe they would have stuck around.

Re: PB. I haven't read the whole thing, because I've been trying to avoid knowing what happened because it just plain upsets me. I did hear that she decided not to come back because she was going to get killed off, which, well, kinda makes sense to me.

Also, I KNOW, re: their only female character. I think they've brought two new ones in, but seriously? People? I have a feeling they don't really understand their fanbase.

At any rate, I'm out. And annoyed. And keep listening to "Orange Sky" on repeat and thinking, SIGH. They should've just made the thing one season. (But had Sara and Michael run off together.)

It made sense to me too, because this way, at least she won't have to be a party to the killing, so to speak.

Well, from the very start it's felt like they don't give a rat's ass about female characters, and after the way they treated Sara, I wouldn't trust them not to screw up, since apparently, in their eyes, they're "dispensable". I know they said hardly any character was safe on the show (by which I guess they mean that only Michael is safe), but it sure seems that they're playing fast and loose with THEIR ONLY FEMALE ONE, but not, for instance, T-Bag.

Prison Break definitely would have benefited from a limited run. I thought even the full first season was stretching it.

I don't believe for a second that they planned to kill Sara BEFORE contract negotations started. I think that's BS. (Networks HATE it when you kill off main characters. Just ask Damon Lindelof & Carlton Cuse.) She wasn't going to be in all 22 episodes because of her pregnancy, so her contract had to be renegotiated, and that's when the troubles started. And that's when they decided to kill Sara. I'm convinced of it.

Then again, I've been wrong before.

Before I read the article, I wasn't too sure, but why would they say that if it wasn't true, especially as they come off looking really bad? Or don't they realize that they do look bad?

I've been thinking about the whole contract renegotiation deal since you mentioned it, and I think I've come to the conclusion that she should have gotten pretty much anything she asked for. I have a feeling that the ratings for the rest of the year will show that she would have been worth whatever they had to pay.

But then again, I, too, have been very very wrong before. And I'm completely biased since hers was the only character I still cared about.

That bothered me, too, when I read the article. Didn't he even read what he wrote? She was written out because the network didn't like any of the suggested avenues for her character. She just didn't play ball once the death notice was signed.

It almost seems like he's trying to spin it in the network's favor (because they talked to him, and SWC can't exactly do anything for him now that she's not on a show), and if that's spinning? Just think about how bad it might have been before editing.

She just didn't play ball once the death notice was signed.
I can't tell you how glad I am that she didn't, because now I won't have to waste a single minute more watching it. And if Sara had been back (and not slated to be killed), I would have watched every episode she was in.

It's especially frustrating because I find it hard to connect with most females on network television, but Sara was one of those few that I loved and understood and cheered for at every turn (like Betty and Liz Lemon). Plus she was just as intelligent and capable as the male lead.

So of course the storyline dictates that she must be killed off. *pulls hair out*

Ack, I have bad news for you, then. Barry Sonnenfield (director of The Addams Family and Men in Black, two movies that never really struck me as visual, but in retrospect kind of are) worked with Bryan Fuller to create "Pushing Daisies" and is responsible for a lot of the gorgeous camera work and saturated technicolor beauty. But it is Really Expensive to create weekly television with that kind of beautiful palette and he was going overbudget and the network freaked and now he's gone. He only got to work on two episodes, the first two, the gorgeous two. I don't think the sense of whimsy will be gone or the characterization, but the beauty and other-worldliness that makes it work as a fairy-tale? Might be in trouble.

I'm SO PLEASED that Cheno sang. I really, really hope it's in her contract to do that every week. My fiance looked at me like I was a nutter, because I sat through that whole scene with my arms wrapped around myself and my fingers flailing and after the big finish, I was all "that was DELIGHTFUL." He's all "so...she's a singer?" More than this, she's a Tony-winning Broadway legend. JOY.

Emerson for the win.

As for PB, I had decided after 301 that I would tune into Chuck instead. I'm glad I did. I watched Prison Break the following day, I wasn't as devastated like some of my other friends when they found out it was Sara's head. There was a scene where Alex & Michael were about to fuck against a wall real close to each other and I thought that was HOT, and Sara's death took a back seat. lol. So, I'm not that upset, especially if all they were going to do is kill her off anyway, why get invested (again)?

I think I liked Ned/Olive more in the pilot, she was coming on a bit too much there (though strangely enough, I was loving the whole stalker bit, with the mirror and the "perching" outside the window, it was the surliness that bugged me).

I did give the show a chance with that 15min preview but decided, that while beautiful and quirky, it was too macabre for me, but now I love it!!!!! THANK YOU!

It sucks that I just started watching Prison Break this summer and now I'm done. Too much testosterone on that show now. I need ovaries in my shows.

People really don't like the narration? That's funny, I was thinking throughout this episode that the show wouldn't be as effective without it. The proximity of Chuck and Ned had me holding my breath the entire time. Way too close for comfort there.

Do you mind if I friend you by the way?

I agree, ovaries are definitely needed on ALL shows, and it drives me nuts when (always male) producers treat female characters and actresses as an inconvenience that they'd rather do without so they can get to the "real" story.

Well, I know a lot of people on my flist dislike narrations in general, but I think most people like/are not bothered by the narration on this show. Except for the ones on my flist who actively disliked the show - they didn't like the narration.

Of course not, friend away!

Lee Pace is always holding his hands close to his body or in his pockets. Oh, show.

I love the cap from the morgue when he's talking about his lack of pronunciation. He looks like he's trying to curl in on himself, and it works much better for me than the ones at the car factory, where they're both bare-armed and walking right next to each other like it's no big deal. I just continually cringe during those scenes, even though logically I KNOW they're not going to brush up against each other.
