End of Summer I took El to the beach on Thursday. We met Georgie at Brighton. As always we had a great time. No shortage of euros and speedos, people sunbathing standing up or interesting people. The beer people fished our ice cold Coronas out of black, plastic, corner store bags filled with ice. The weather was lovely. We had a wonderful time. We went to a Russian cafe and had handmade, delicious pierogi (Teachnically vareniki. I am a lover of all dumplings in all forms.). The days of summers are winding down--I was actually cold on the stoop tonight. Beaches close Monday. I want to take advantage (though admittedly, for the first time in years, I am excited for cooler weather). Tomorrow we are thinking of going to Orchard Beach in the Bronx with our friends. Sunday will be Coney Island--El has ride tickets to use at Astroland. And then Monday with Georgie back at Brighton Beach or maybe Jacob Riis. I figure we might as well try to spend the last weekend the beaches are open are the beach. I just talked to my 35 weeks pregnant best friend for over 2 hours. I felt like it was so short of an amount of time. I could not believe 2 hours had passed. I hate talking on the phone, but there is a lot to talk about. I wish we could see each other and talk more. We have only lived in the same city for 2.5 of the last 13 years, but it does not feel like it. I wish we lived closer. The kids spent hours on the stoop tonight--playing skelly, inventing yet more uses for milk crates, eating dinner, dancing. They even brought out the drums, tambourines and maracas and gave the block a concert. Maybe with some practice we can take the four of them to busk in Union Square. Current Mood: relaxed |

School Classes convened this week. Monday was my first day. I wore a gorgeous dress from a random import store on St. Marks, black rounded toe vintage inspired platforms for those who are keeping track. There were long lines to get in the buildings and to get on the elevators. It was crazy. I guess on the first day, mass chaos ensues. Surely enough, it will wane. Many, many attractive people. It is a great people watching place. Professors seem cool and smart, good classmates, interesting subjects. Monday I have Intro to Public Affairs and Public & Non-profit Management. Both will be very interesting classes.
As I was walking to the train, I saw a Duane Reade across the street, which was fortunate because I need a birth control refill. They transferred my script from my pharmacy in my old neighborhood. And while the pharmacist was filling it he was talking to me about where I lived and what I did. As I left he said, "See you next month, Melissa." Seriously. He was totally flirting, and the fact that I love sex is already known so that's a plus. So is the fact that I take sex and safe sex very seriously. Maybe I will ask him out when I go for my next refill. Hot story, no, bonding over my refill? Too bad he is not too cute, and his pharmacy was out of the morning after pill (lots of accidents this weekend in Park Ave South I guess). Dealbreaker. Although, that encounter has now introduced the random interjection of a pharmacist in my life in strange, consistent ways. Maybe the universe is telling me something.
Afterwards, I stopped off for a vodka tonic on my train bus transfer (hey, a girl needs a break), and I forgot being a solo female means every male speaks to you. One gentleman did give me his number. Unfortunately, not a promising one. J. was very nice, lived alone, was single, smart, loved his career...but a fair skinned, skinny balding red head (just not my type, not that there is anything wrong with that). Another dealbreaker. He was so nice. I feel bad I am not going to call him. But I like to think I gave him a good Monday night by talking incessantly and telling stories through 3 cocktails to he and his friends. Diety knows I enjoyed myself, but don't I always? That's a promising school day. It can only get better, right?
Wednesday was much tamer, but coming on the heels of Tuesday--staying up all night to watch the lunar eclipse, an encounter with a cop on the street while I was wandering around trying to find the best spot to view the eclipse, going to bed at 6:30 am, a 7 am NYPD visit (and by visit, I mean 4 undercover officers in bulletproof vests rang the bells for 30 minutes until door was opened. Always pleasant), sleeping only a few hours, spending hours getting a stolen and found car out of hock and loaded on a trailer, a big fight on my street and subsequent ambulance and police presence (3 times in one day!)--anything would be tame.
I had my other two classes today--Economic Analysis & Public Policy and Research & Analysis I (basically stats and research). They went swimmingly. Very cool professors. Many more hot people. Had I known, I would have went back to school sooner! I wore a gray pencil dress and black jacket thing and black platform sandals and red purse. Carrying a 4.5 year old on your shoulders many blocks in platforms is serious exercise. Afterwards, I met my girlfriend for dinner (I had gluten and vegan veggie lasagna and taro roll, delicious!). The evening was gorgeous. We had drinks at the lounge in the W hotel and laughed for hours. It is also a great people watching place, and grass inside is always appealing. We finished off with milkshakes. Definitely much tamer than Monday and Wednesday. A lovely first week of school.
