Went to the Richard Stallman talk today,|
Quite entertaining but if you've read his essay than nothing much new.
Amusing parts included:
His rant (before the talk) about why we shouldn't drink Coca Cola
The cheer that went up when he said music companies deserve to be driven into backruptcy.
when someone asked "Is HURD ready yet ?"
Someone pushing him on the GNU/Linux v Linux thing (although this actually went into an interesting discussion about the Linux bitkeeper issue).
When some Russian guy asked him about his views on communism.
I picked up some "GNU & Linux: The Dynamic Duo" stickers, give us a shout if you want one. I'll probably stick one on BITS.
Suprisingly I didn't see anyone from the CS department at the talk. I'm not really sure who made up the bulk of the audience, but mostly they were about 90% male wearing geeky tshirt and with a wide variety of weird hacker hair-cuts. One guy attracted some attention by wearing a costume which made him look like an extra from Rocky Horror (black leather, corset, etc.).

Well, is HURD ready yet? (ie. what did RMS say?)

Nope, although he dias that they had hired someone to work full-time on the Hurd, but because of recent major changes in the architecture it was still likely to sometime off. He then told people to go and use linux instead.

Was that "use linux" or "use GNU/Linux"?

Since they were talking about kernels, it is okay to say "Linux" rather than "GNU/Linux." There is no GNU/Linux kernel.
