Bio
Character profile

Character name: Dorian Gray

Taken from: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and the Portrait of Dorian Gray.

Age: Appears to be in his late 20's to earlier 30's. True age is 82.

Occupation: Business man, Spy.

Physical description: Shoulder lenght black hair, brown eyes, average build and height. Dorian is fairly strong and agile, capable of taking care of himself in a fight and is often described as handsome. He is meticulous about his clothing and is always well dressed, with a preference for gray suits.

Skills/ Abilities: Having grown up in the world of the wealthy upper class, Dorian is well-educated and intelligent. Because of his status and ‘extracurricular’ actives Dorian is smooth talker, someone who enjoys manipulating and corrupting others and since he has sent so many years doing this, he is very talented in this field. It is especially helpful for his spying as well as it allows him to gain access to sensitive information. Dorian is an accomplished swordsman, having studied fencing during his school years and his preferred weapons are a both a short sword concealed in his cane and a pistol.

Dorian’s most impressive attribut is his invulnerability. As a young man, Dorian wished that a portrait of him would age in his place and through some strange magic, he got his wish. Not only does the portrait take each year in his place but it also takes any sort of damage done to Dorian’s body, allowing him to heal rapidly from almost any wound.

Personality: Arrogance is Dorian’s most defining trait which stems from both his appearance and his immortality. Dorian also has a superiority complex, where he considers most others beneath him. As mentioned earlier, Dorian is intelligent and educated however he can be blind sided by his arrogance. Selfish, frivolous, and condescending are other words that describe Dorian’s attitude and behavior as his main pursuit in life have always been his own pleasures and survival.

Flaws: Dorian’s arrogance will always be his downfall as it leads him to underestimating everyone else. Also, Dorian is still a human at heart and does suffer occasional attacks of his conscious from past events in his life which can lead him to making stupid mistakes. For example, like when he removed the knife from Mina’s chest. He also has a weakness for the finer things in life and can be distracted in his pursuit of such pleasures. Finally, while Dorian may heal rapidly from his wounds that does not mean he does not feel the pain of them and if his body has enough damage done to it, he can be disable for a while.

Brief History: Born to Margaret Devereux and Adam Gray, Dorian was the product of a tragic romance that was cut short after his father was killed in a duel while Dorian’s mother was pregnant. She died shortly after she gave birth to him and Dorian was raised by his grandfather, Lord Henry Kelso, a tyrant who was rumored to be behind Adam Gray’s death and who bore little love for Dorian. He provided for Dorian financially but had little to do with the boy and passed away when Dorian was in his teens, leaving him with a large inheritance.

When he is 24, his life takes a step out of the ordinary when he meets two people who will have a large impact on his life. The first is Basil Hallward, a young artist who soon becomes a close and dear friend of Dorians and is the man who paints the famous portrait. The second is Lord Henry Wotton, who introduces Dorian to the hedostic lifestyle the younger man would later adopt. It is also Lord Henry who leads Dorian to making his wish as he drones on about how Dorian’s life and looks will fade as he grows older, creating fear in young Dorian’s heart. After Dorian makes his wish in a fit of panic, Basil gives him the portrait in an attempt to calm him down while Lord Henry’s influence on him increases.

Shortly after this time, Dorian falls in love with a young actress named Sibyl Vane who he becomes engaged to until she quits acting. Angry over this, Dorian cruelly breaks off their engagement which leads to her suicide and sparks off the first change in his portrait, making Dorian realize his wish has come true.

Decades later, Dorian’s life has become a never-ending pursuit of corruption and pleasure. His reputation for debauchery and perversion spreads while his painting ages and grows increasingly hideous to reflect the condition of his soul. It is then that Basil Hallward returns and confronts Dorian about the rumors of Dorian’s activities. He shows Basil his portrait where after Basil begs him to change his ways but Dorian, angry at this, kills Basil to keep his secret. This is the first life that Dorian takes, after which nothing is sacred and his life degrades even further.

More years pass when another man discovers Dorian’s secret, a Professor James Moriarty who then steals Dorian’s portrait and blackmails the immortal into working for him. His mission: To join the League and collect the samples Moriarty needs in order to reproduce the members and technology of the League. After his treachery is revealed and the fiasco in Mongolia, Dorian and Sanderson Reed escape the stronghold and make their way to Hong Kong in order to cash in on Moriarty’s drug business there. There is one problem however, Moriarty is still alive and demands that they continue his work in Asia as well as assist him in creating his war.
