Gimme a break!!!
In Alabama, we have the Democratic Party and the Republican Party as the two main political groups. However, in the upcoming election, we might have another party represented, the U.S. Marijuana Party. The U.S Marijuana party has active chapters in seven states. This party was founded by a “common country girl” Loretta Nall, who in addition to founding the party is running for governor in Alabama. She started the party after she was arrested in 2002 for misdemeanor charges. Care to take a guess as to why she was arrested? Nall and her husband were arrested when police searched her trailer and found her two children, rolling papers, a scale, and 0.87 grams of marijuana.
Nall admits to using marijuana for pain relief from, not cancer, but osteoporosis. “She used to smoke recreationally, but stopped after her arrest”. Okay she used to smoke recreationally, but now that she is using it for osteoporosis pain relief in a state that doesn’t even allow terminally ill patients to smoke marijuana for pain relief, her use of marijuana is completely different from recreational use.
Nall is trying to muster support for her campaign. Try another guess as to what her platform is; changing the drug policy in Alabama. The only problem is, in order to get her party on the ballot, she must collect more than 40,000 signatures from Alabama voters (thank you extremely dated constitution). Nall thinks this number is ludicrous and it was “designed by democratic and republican state officials to keep out competition” (Rawls). Hey, if pot-heads like her are the competition, I’d want to keep the competition out too.
What’s even more absurd is Nall thinks she is going to win. She hasn’t had any political experience outside of founding her party, the only work she has done has been fast food, she hasn’t even gotten her name on the ballot, and she thinks she is going to win. If it comes down to her and Roy Moore though, I think I’d have to side with the U.S. Marijuana Party. Who knows, maybe if the people in Montgomery start using water bongs, they might get something accomplished, in the 186 years Alabama has been a state, what have they accomplished without marijuana use?
