Finished a book. Around 11:00 PM I became incredibly entrenched in this book I've been reading, and now I find it 2:30 AM and suddenly I am noticing my surroundings again. For instance, the faucet in the kitchen is still dripping. This was incredibly obnoxious shortly before 11:00 PM, but then the noise ceased to exist to me for two and a half hours. I feel sort of bad to have left it the whole while, but holy shit. I can't remember the last book that did that to me. I knew I was missing the way I once read, but I did not know how much! I hope the next book I pick up will absorb me in the same way. It's been too long now I've spent picking things up, barely getting a start, and then forgetting about it. I did manage to finish 'A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius' a couple of weeks ago, but man. I started it in August. I almost exclusively read it while on the train. I still haven't read all of the stuff in excess of the story itself. It was something of a relief to finish it -- both because I was breaking a long running inability to finish a book other than a comic, and also because that book itself made me anxious as hell. I liked it quite a bit, but through a good chunk of it I'm not sure I could say that I enjoyed it. That is too much what my head sounds like on a regular basis. I picked up 'Havemercy' the other day at B&N, finally. I don't usually shell out for hardcover books, but I read ( the acknowledgments ) and decided, hell with it. This is a book I can spend a bit extra on. Now I should probably go to bed, but I've got a sort of adrenaline rush/clear mindedness/desire not to lose a sense of where the book has left me. I always want to keep reading when I finish a book, but I never want to start a new one too quickly, because I don't want to lose the pieces of myself still wrapped up in the previous book. PS: To Siri, I did love Francis. Also, how was that book so consistently hilarious at the strangest moments? Current Mood: satisfied |

This is nothing new.... ...but it is so frustrating. I don't know why the media doesn't bother with this (actually, there was a tiny contribution in October's issue of Rolling Stone) but if they want scandal, this is it. "This past June, on a cool morning in southwest Alaska, fourteen wolf pups were pulled from their dens and shot in the head, one by one, by state biologists sanctioned by Governor Sarah Palin. At a month old, these pups had opened their eyes and ears less than two weeks earlier. They had ventured from the dark safety of the den once or twice. They had grown into rolling, tumbling, play-fighting puppies for whom their only care was, when would they next get to nurse? They still depended entirely on their parents and their packs for food, shelter, protection. But every single adult member of their packs had already been gunned down from above by the Alaska state workers who shot them. These pups did nothing to deserve such a malicious early end to life other than to be born a wolf in Alaska in the era of Sarah Palin"

going soy free for a while... Hello,
I was wondering if there are any soy-free vegans out there and if you would care to share examples of what your daily food might be? Also what are some "convince" soy-free vegan foods that you buy or do you cook everything from scratch? Oh and butter. Do you know of a vegan brand that is ok for people who don't handle soy well? Thanks! |

re-posted from the Center for Biological Diversity's e-newsletter Here's something to consider: "Wal-Mart's "Eco-gold" is 14-Karat Façade
Wal-Mart claims that its new jewelry line Love, Earth is eco-friendly because the precious metals it uses are traceable to the original mines. This, says the world's largest retailer, means the gold and silver are "mined and manufactured to our standards and criteria." But what, pray tell, are Wal-Mart's standards and criteria? Actually, the company's gold comes from Utah and Nevada mines owned by mining giants Rio Tinto and Newmont Mining Corp., both notorious for causing environmental damage in the United States and overseas. Making matters worse, Wal-Mart's standards reportedly aren't monitored or certified by any credible independent party. Environmental problems at Newmont's Nevada mines include depletion of the water table, air pollution, "acid mine drainage," and toxic holding ponds laced with cyanide and heavy metals. We at the Center for Biological Diversity believe that "sustainable mining" can't include strip mining and cyanide heap leach mining that destroys entire ecosystems -- and that's why we'd like to send out a big thanks to the 4,000-plus responders to our August action alert opposing the Conglomerate Mesa gold-mining proposal near Death Valley National Park, which would also use this poisonous cyanide-leaching process in a former wilderness study area. Your actions make a huge difference, and we'll keep fighting until this ill-conceived proposal is scrapped entirely. Read more about Wal-Mart's not-so-eco-friendly enterprises in New West Development."
I had already known to be wary of diamonds, but hadn't thought about researching where the gold you buy comes from. Cuz, you know, I spend so much of my budget on gold and diamonds. ;)

Village Pet Store I recently found out about this and while it isn't perhaps directly related to veganism, I believe it speaks volumes about the exploitation of animals which is something of interest to all of you, I'm sure. Either way, let me know if you'd rather I take it down. While New Yorkers have been consumed by the stock market meltdown, a tiny little pet store quietly opened four days ago at 89 7th Avenue between West 4th and Bleeker Street in the West Village of New York City.
There are no puppies or kittens in the windows here.
Instead, a live leopard lounges on a tree in the window.
Or is it?

Kefir I couldn't find anything about this on the sidebar, so apologies if this has been posted already.... I'm slowly moving over to vegan from vegetarian, and one of the things I've enjoyed in the past is kefir. There is a soy kefir (somewhat of an acquired taste), but I found out that it's not actually dairy-free. I've also seen coconut kefir in stores, but it's on the expensive side. I figure that, with some initial investment on the cultures, I can make my own, but I've never been very good at getting coconuts open without a huge mess, losing half the contents, and usually injuring myself. Are there any alternatives to this? I hate to buy canned when fresh is available (albeit not local), but I'm thinking the effort expended isn't worth it. Thoughts? Current Mood: hopeful |

grits/cream of wheat: vegan or not? Sorry, I have another "is it vegan" food question.
Before I became a vegan, I actually felt I had less options. I was a very picky eater as a kid, and I didn't eat a variety of foods, nor did I eat healthy. Now as a vegan, I'm more open minded and I'll try anything: providing that it doesn't have animal products.
This morning at the dining hall, I was making my way towards the oatmeal, and a friendly worker who likes to chat with me was grabbing something to eat as well. I asked her what the "cream of wheat" or "grits" was (it's labelled both ways) that they have next to the oatmeal. I was curious. She told me to try it: it's just a grain. I told her I was vegan, and explained that I cannot eat animal products, and then I asked her if there's milk in it. I'm not sure if she was telling me the truth or not, she seemed a little bit clueless, kinda like she never questions what's in the foods she eats. She said it's basically corn meal, and I asked her if it was made in water, not milk, and she told me water. So I tried some, and I found grits to be DELICIOUS. So, anyone who is more familiar with grits, can you tell me if the standard grits are vegan? I googled it and there are some recipes that have cheddar cheese flavor, but this was plain. However, it did taste creamy, but that could just be the way the corn meal is prepared. I really hope it's vegan, I want to have it again. |

48 hours to Green Europe (it's actually less). Far from the eyes of the media, elected representatives in the European Parliament are writing a climate and energy plan for our continent. As citizens, we've campaigned hard for a global deal to stop catastrophic global warming, and Europe's negotiators have driven progress in international talks -- but if big polluters succeed in watering down Europe's own climate action plan, all our momentum will be lost.[1] And that's just what's happening right now. This Tuesday afternoon, European parliamentarians are gathering to finalise their proposals -- but the whole plan is being undermined by industry lobbyists demanding they lock in massive "permits to pollute", which would put emissions targets completely out of reach for 2020 and beyond.[2] Before it's too late, in the next 48 hours, let's deluge representatives from our own countries with emails and phone calls -- urging them not to give in to the lobbyists, and instead to put forward strong plans to build a sustainable future for our societies, showing the world the way forward. Just click the link below to see the names and phone numbers of the representatives from your own country -- we've added a few "talking points" you can use in your emails and phone calls: http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_our_future_europe/?cl=133913188&v=224668 people from 27 countries -- the members of the European parliament on its environment committee -- can fix this plan. And there are tens or hundreds of thousands of us in every one of these countries. We're told that the most effective thing we can do is for as many as possible of us to email or call the offices of those representatives in our own countries (particularly those from the conservative EPP umbrella party, who have shown most signs of giving in to the lobbyists), making the case for them not to compromise on permits to pollute and other backward-looking loopholes, and asking them to invest in building a cleaner, greener future for Europe. At a time of economic difficulty and high fossil fuel prices, efficiency and sustainability become even more vital.[3] Just click the link below for everything you need -- names, phone numbers, email addresses and suggestions about what to say. And don't delay -- we have hours, not days, to make a difference. http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_our_future_europe/?cl=133913188&v=2246With hope and determination, Paul, Pascal, Veronique, Graziela, Ricken, Ben, Iain, Milena and the whole Avaaz team ( Sources, and my email. ) |
