...yeah i know. WE ARE SO SCREWED FOR SPRING VARSITY. but oh well. procrastinators will be procrastinators.
and on a sidenote, i promised a review on memoirs and brokeback a million years ago but couldn't possibly think of anything to say about them that hasn't been said before but decided in putting in own two cents anyway. :P
memoirs of a geisha:
every asian should go see it. it's not a good movie but it's very interesting to see the interpretations of a white guy who makes up a story about an "exotic world" and how another white guy interprets that interpretation. of course, it's not like i'm the total asian know it all obviously but there's a point where certain cultural minutiae needed to be heeded and they weren't. i thought there was going to be quiet and delicacy, stillness and silent pain; in an interview, gong li remarked "the most tragic thing" about the story was because it depicted "a situation where society... doesn't let you express your true love or find your true love." instead of that, however, there was a soap opera in it's stead. and i just felt the tone of the movie wrong. it wasn't subtle and graceful but like another big explosive musical waiting to start, like in any moment zhang ziyi was going to burst into singing about the beef she has with gong li and the angst she gets for loving ken watanabe.
...but a good point was that gong li was wicked. go watch it for her coolness.
brokeback mountain, or what i like to call "BB mt."
i heard there's been a lot of the "be-there-or-be-a-bad-gay" kind of peer pressure and while for others, its the "it's-a-gay-cowboy-movie" kind of thing. but disregard all the talk. go see it if you can take in quiet, observative, powerful films without the big fancy symphonic lotr climax and music. it's like "broken flowers" without the bill murray deadpan thing. although personally i liked broken flowers better, go watch brokeback and formulate your own opinions about the movie. it's too good for me to spout any more stuff on.
