Tom Petty & Eddie Vedder

So the show was...interesting...Pearl Jam, well it was about the second worst PJ concert I've seen (next to Chicago on their last tour), though that largely wasn't their fault. The set was short (not their fault), very Very VERY bland (their fault, but I can't blame them. At least not given the type of show it was), but the sound was terrible. It was loud to the point of distortion. The mix was...off...arguably to the point of "bad". For those that have been to the Marcus, know that sounds isn't all that good ([info]dr_r0ck will claim it's the worst place to see a concert EVAR...but he fucking exaggerates. There are plenty of shithole bars with worse sound and less places to sit if you like that sort of thing).

However, I actually thought Petty sounded a lot better. Still not awesome, but about as good as the Marcus can do. So it seemed clear that they set the sound for Petty, and Pearl Jam is just a tad louder. Of course there was also a power outage at Summer Fest which I wonder if it affected any of the sound check...guess I'll find out tonight.

Anyway, Pearl Jam started weak, but the Encore and a little bit before made the show alright, the highlights made it a good time for me...and Petty was really good. Sure he posed after EACH OF THE FIRST FOUR SONGS, but it was a fantastic set...if you've never seen them before, like me. They played just about all their hits. The sort of setlist I'd HATE if Pearl Jam played. I want the rarities, the seldom heards...in fact as for the amount of "hits" it was WORSE than the PJ set. I get the feeling that it's going to be really boring tonight. Well see...

Highlight #1: About a third of the way through the Heartbreaker set Ed came out and sang "The Waiting". I really wish I could borrow [info]dlocke's camera to tape that. It was too cool for school.

Highlight #2: At the end of the encore Ed came back and sang a verse on "American Girl".

So I was going to leave during Petty because I wanted to beat the rush to leave Summerfest, I wasn't sure if Ed would come out and sing or not, I had to work today (I AM DYING), and I would be seeing them again tonight. Given my notes on Petty's set choices above, I was pretty sure I wouldn't REALLY need to see them twice. But then Ed came out pretty early in the show, and Tom spoke the words I loathe to hear "Ed will be back later". I'm sure if anyone heard me, they would certainly have been puzzled by my shout of "MOTHER FUCKER". I couldn't leave now...what if they did something I WASN'T going to see tonight, I'd kick myself forevah in perpetuity (despite my limited grasp of the English language, believe it or not, that was redundant on purpose). It was the fact that second the song that Ed sang on was LAST SONG of the encore was the reason for sadness for my team (from a sleep perspective). Really when you think about set construction, it would HAVE TO BE...but none the less, it figured.

Highlight #3: a movie bet with [info]dr_r0ck: We bet a movie on the starting Cardinals receivers catching touchdowns this year. The we agreed upon over/under was 5.5. Meaning to win taking the over both Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald have to catch at least 6 each. However if one of them only catches for or less the under wins.

I took the under.

EDIT: I just proofread this because I had a minute...WOW, I am the WORST speller on the planet.

"Kick myself forevah in perpetuity" is my favorite piece of unintentional poetry on my friends page today. It has a lovely ring to it.

...and that's the best compliment I've received in quite some time. Thank you.

Bwahahah. He did a lot of that when I saw him, too. At least you didn't have a drunk guy next to you insisting that you give him a fucking HIGH FIVE after every hit.

Were you sitting next to Puddy from Sienfeld?

Yeah, like Vnuks if the act isn't acoustic.

I think you completely misunderstand what I mean when I say that it's the worst venue to see a show. Obviously there are going to be A LOT of shithole bars with A LOT worse sound, but the bands playing there wouldn't be playing the Marcus either. Any show that you would see at the Marcus is going be an act big enough to fill the place or be some kind of festival which hardly ever works out good and for the kind of money that it costs to get in there, because most bands that play there are pretty huge, it is the worst place to see a show because the sound always sucks. I have always said that the sounds not bad if your in the red seats and maybe some of the yellow, but it's still not above average even (for that size show of course). The other problem is that the place is so small that it's usually nearly impossible to get seats close enough for the sound to be decent without going through a scalper.........or a fan club member :)

I also forgot to mention that for the quality of the equipment that bands would use at the Marcus the sound should be a ton better than it usually is.
