Hey! Ladybugs bite!
Another blueberry harvest (and a double batch of blueberry cornmeal muffins) - though now I'm competing with sparrows (I think), who eat the blueberries on the far side of the bush while watching me with their beady little eyes. The bees are loving the borage which I generously seeded around the blueberry patch, and that makes for a little more careful movement now. Strangely enough, a ladybug bit me while picking the other night - a pinch with a sting afterwards, and I checked online to verify that it's likely a ladybeetle of Asian origin. There are ladybugs in all stages of development in my garden, and I'm glad I have them in my fight against aphids - just shocked me to swat one of them snacking on my arm.
This weekend I planted spinach seed, daikon, parsnip, rutabaga, and some radish seeds, to fill in currently empty spaces. Started my winter cabbage and kohlrabi in flats.
Brought fresh snap peas into work this morning, and they're all gone to happy munchers :) Must harvest small-seeded peas and blanch for the freezer and winter stir-fry...
There's a flower on one of my small tomatillo plants - I'm still waiting for a growth spurt. The vining nasturtium is taking its sweet time - no sign of the scarlet runners. Beet, carrot, parsnip and lettuce seeds are up (Bed #7). Squash and cucumber, still nothing to write home about. More flowers on the tomatoes, but no sign of any fruit. Keep tapping those flowers...
Need to plant more calendula, direct seeded-spinach and chantenay carrot for winter harvest. Need to pull the rest of the turnip greens and process them before they get too bitter. Need to transplant my weekend purchases: Cucumber (yeah, I caved), zuchinni, herbs, huckleberry, tea camillia, and a pretty yellow alstromeria.
