Bona Na Croin
(Back home in Bangor again)

So, as a follow-up I've been preparing some designs of mine for apparel wear. One of which, though not to safest to display were I live, has some design ideas;

Bona Na Croin
by *Illahie

Bona na Croin - Collar nor Crown

I've been wanting to edit this design and make it into a t-shirt. Thing is, I can't display this one too much, due to the troubles. Wearing it here would be equivalent to being the only deer allowed to be shot during the season on the entire island, and wearing a bulls-eye. Especially now since the 11th&12th of July are coming up and tension is running high.

But I want to get it made for conventions outside of Northern Ireland, and I would love to have the poem printed on the back as well.

Thing is, I want to know the name of the author of the poem (click the image to view the poem as well). I know it was a poem from around the 19th century by the Fenian rebels.. but whom wrote the infamous "Bona na Croin" poem?

Does anyone have any ideas? I'd like to give the person proper credit

... I searched around online, but except the statements that the poem/song is very old, I found nothing about the autor.
I found under one version of the poem the autor reference: "Fianna na hÉireann".
But a search here turned up, that this is no person but a community/group who existed since the beginning of the last century and is also considered as a terrorist group( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fianna_na_hÉireann ).

It's a shame when 'classical/mythological' ideas have been used for nationalistic purposes. Images/slogans such as the one above are very nice but now tinged with someone else's propaganda. I quite like a lot of the old European (eg, Scandinavian) imagery but it's often now linked to fascism so you can't wear it without being accused of being affiliated with that group. While i'm not a fan of the St George flag (and the Union Jack) I can see why some English people had an attempt to 'take back the flag' because of people using it for nationalistic purposes, while I was in Canada people flew the national flag in a friendly, fun way.

Good thing i'm just misanthropic so dislike everyone :P

Argh I hate it when I can't find my answers on teh interweb! :P

I tried googling and then checked the site of my university-library and Omega (online article database) to see if it was covered in any books/articles listed there. But nope. :(

Good luck, hopefully someone else has more luck! :)
