I'm getting old and I don't care. :D
O_O

Okay, so, today I turned twenty-five. I don't really have time at the moment for existential angst regarding this fact, and besides, I've gotten so used to getting older by this point that I think I've given up being distressed by it. I embrace my rapidly increasing age. I suppose resignation is the first step toward zen. ;)

Anyway. I wasn't expecting to get anything today, because my sister had already given me my birthday present: a pit ticket to the Cure concert next month. (!!!) I had also bought myself a present, something I've been wanting for more than a year now: a tiny little $20 yinyang necklace made of silver and black onyx and mother of pearl. A couple of books, too. I was perfectly content.

Now, last year for my birthday, I went with my sister, Mom, and Mom's boyfriend to the Wildlife World Zoo, which was a lot of fun, especially because I got to pet the little pygmy goats. I realize this isn't everyone's idea of a good time, but I love goats. I was rather hoping we might go back to the zoo this year, or maybe to Rawhide, which also has a petting zoo.

Well, we didn't go to the zoo, nor did we go to Rawhide. Instead I got something for my birthday that I was not expecting at all.

See, I've always said I never want to have kids. Turns out I was wrong. I love kids. And now... I have two of them.

Literally. For real. Kids.

KIDS.

XDDDDDDDDDDD

They're about six months old. The black and white one is a neutered male -- a wether. The brown and black one is a doe. They are so, so beautiful.

I've named the wether Boris and the doe Nadya. Which I guess is kind of a joke -- I love the name Nadezhda, and have been saying for years that if I ever had a kid, and if she were a girl, I would name her Nadezhda. Well, what do you know. I have a kid. So Nadya she is. :) And Boris... well, he just looks like a Boris, all right?

Boris:

And Nadya, who looks rather like a gazelle:

They're still rather terrified of us, but they seem to be acclimating pretty quickly. Tomorrow when we buy some treats for them, I think we'll be able to get them to come to us. They do seem to like the yard. And each other. :)

Boris also likes the camera.

And Nadya is hard to photograph, because what she likes most is hiding behind Boris.

But here's one good shot, anyway. Gazelle! (They spring like gazelles when they run, too. :)

Goats, you guys. I have goats. In my yard.

GOATS. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

My sister arranged all of this. Clearly, I have the most awesome family in the world.

YOU GUYS. I GOT KIDS FOR MY BIRTHDAY.

In other news, we just finished watching The Fountain, and now I think we're going to watch Pan's Labyrinth. And eat more pumpkin pie, which was my birthday cake this year. ;) Thanks to everyone who wished me happy birthday! You guys are all awesome. :D

!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY. ^_____^

Pan's Labyrinth is really good and incredibly sad. I cried through most of the end.

Your goats are beautiful. ^__^ Goats really are lovelies, and Nadya is such a pretty naaame, and, in conclusion, AWESOME.

Thank you! :D They are indeed very awesome!

(As a random aside: I keep being reminded of you because for some reason my sister has made a little display of tiny plastic sheep toys on the computer tower. XD One of them appears to be a glow-in-the-dark sheep...)

(Also, if you enjoy Pan's Labyrinth, I'll link you the Sandman/Pan's Labyrinth crossover I wrote for Yuletide last year. Iffen you like :D)

Ooh! Yes, link me. :) I'm pretty much delighted by about anything crossed over with Sandman -- but especially stuff like Pan's Labyrinth that already falls right into a Sandman sort of universe.

Eee! Cain and Abel! Man, I love those two. And you captured Cain excellently. The spindly limbs and tiny glasses. The knobby hands clawed over the chair. I can practically see the comic panel.

Dreams love the princesses, don't they?"
"Um..."
"Or Dream does. Or did once, anyway. Anyway. Anyway..."

Heh. Yes. Good old Matthew, always saying something more significant than he intends. Your description of the Corinthian was spot-on, too. I don't know if it's what Gaiman was going for, but seriously that dude looks like a scary fucking German.

Anyway, awesome idea and an awesome fic -- and suitably gruesome, for both fandoms. ;) That mandrake-uprooting was particularly flinch-inducing. I sort of cringed into my chair at that bit. Well done. ;)

Man, you got me. I was so confused at first, then it all made sense, and OMFG GOATS. Nadya is especially gorgeous. I want to poke her ears.

Happy birthday again, and I'm glad it was great. Pan's Labyrinth destroyed me slightly.

It's just that I can't stop making accidental puns about them! I call everything "kid." When I talk to my cats, I'm like, "Hey, kids, what's up?" When I talk to my sister's snakes, I'm like, "Whoa there, kids, where do you think you're going?" When I talk to the chickens, I'm like, "God, you kids are loud today!"

And when we were driving back from picking up the goats, I kept turning to the back seat and talking to them, and I was like, "You kids are fucking adorable." And then I was like, *facepalm!* Because WTF. They really are kids.

OMGGOATS!

Nadya is very pretty, and does indeed look like a gazelle. So, what's the current critter count at your house, then, with your kids and the recently hatched chickens?

Glad your birthday was awesome! (GOATS!)

GOATS!

what's the current critter count

Oy. I think it's 8 cats, 1 dog, 2 goats, 2 snakes, 1 fish, and 18 chickens. o_o We're trying to give away some of the chickens...

They are! It must be why I love them. XD

No, but really. The ranchers who sold us the goats had lots that didn't have horns, due to a genetic defect. Perfect harmless petting-zoo material. I made sure to pick the non-deficient ones. Because there's no point in having a goat if you can't have horns. ;)

I certainly will. Although I doubt there's anyone I haven't already scared away by shouting things like, "Don't let the Demon out!" "Demon, get back in here!" "Crap, where the hell did the Demon go?"

Incidentally, we once had three roosters who were all named Satan. When they were chicks, the color pattern on their foreheads looked like very, very angry eyebrows, so my sister named them Satan I, Satan II, and Satan III. We could never tell them apart. But sometimes in the morning when they crowed we would yell at them. "Satan, shut up out there!"

Happy Birthday!!!

Yes, you have an awesome family! The goats are gorgeous, especially Nadya. Her coloring is so beautiful! Hopefully your two won't prove to be the escape artists that one of my childhood friend's goats were! (Of course his were pygmy goats which made it easier for them to squeeze through the openings by the gate posts!-_^ )

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]_grayswandir_
2008-05-06 12:04 am UTC (link)
Yes, I certainly hope they won't escape! I don't think they could fit through any of the openings around our yard, though. The chickens can barely even get out.

The lady who sold them to us did say that they were Nigerian Pygmy Goats, though they seem large for pygmies to me, considering that they're still young and will grow quite a bit yet. Really, the adults at the ranch seemed to be perfectly normal goat size, and not pygmy size at all. Unless normal goats are rather bigger than I think they are. *puzzled*

Ah well. They're cute, whatever they are!
