Other Notes Goneril is a character from the Shakespearian Tragedy King Lear. For those unfamiliar it is the story of an aged King who in his poor judgement divides his Kingdom as according to which of his three daughters love him best. From this point on there is nothing but trouble in the forms of adultery, torture, murder and all round bad behaviour. The loyal daughter (Cordelia) is banished, the two remaining betray their father and when the bastard Edmund involves himself in the mix to gain his own revenge things go from bad to worse. Critics consider this Shakespeare's unfilmable play due to its surreal and almost psychodelic moments in which Lear goes mad and the extent of it's violence. It is the authors favourite and she is writing a novel in which the villians of the piece - Goneril and Edmund - are repositioned as lovers in the style of the overused and overrated play Romeo and Juliet.
