Waxing 101

My waxing technician course is going really well. There's only myself and another kiwi lady, plus a girl who is doing a beauty diploma within the college itself working with our awesome teacher - it's really, really hands on too. I haven't fucked anything up yet, which bodes well for all of you!! We watched a film on hygiene, technique, aftercare etc etc to start with. Now it's quite literally: learn the theory, discuss/ask questions, practise on a small area/discuss/ask more questions and then do a complete (half and half with the kiwi chick) job.

Although I have done my own waxing off and on, waxing for friends, Ash's damn uni-brow etc for ages now so it's cool to see I've been mostly doing everything correctly all these years!

So far in my course I have actually waxed: half leg, full leg, arm pit and bikini area/line. I observed a full Brazilian wax yesterday, then sat for one as the other girls needed a model and today I did half of a brazillian wax (with the kiwi chick doing the other half). It was on a girl who had only EVER shaved her pubic area and a word to the wise, if you want fully or partially bald genitals I thoroughly recommend always waxing or at the very least epilating. For serious, shaving is the devils work. The skin around her genitals was so badly damaged from shaving/in-growns/rashes and we had to work very hard to remove hair from the areas that had obviously been shaved repeatedly for a number of years. She was only in her early twenties too.

It has all been very educational, interesting and the method of teaching basically exactly mimics the way I tend to easily consolidate information and learn things, so it's fucking awesome for me. I am genuinely learning at a rapid pace, the days go so quick and it is actually really enjoyable.

Tonight I need to read more of my course work stuff, research all the supplies and equipment I haven't yet bought and start putting together my own price lists for what I will be charging for waxing.

For those who don't know I am currently converting a room here to a waxing space so I can work from home. I am thinking for the first couple of weeks after I become qualified I will offer 50% off all services so that I can get heaps and heaps of practise and feedback.

Only a week and a bit more to go!

So totes calling my space/business 'Waxing Lyrical' :D

Moral Turpitude

Some of you may have seen this link on my facebook, but I really want to post and keep this here because I think it is so fucking awesome and funny.

http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/chi/2909185252.html

I was running late to make the train on my first day at my new job as a chemical engineer, so I decided to drive my car to the train station. As I pulled up to the train station, I saw the train I needed depart anyway, so I figured I'd just have to park the car and wait for the next one, which would be arriving shortly. The only parking I saw was a big parking lot with signs that said DECAL ONLY. I figured I had a village decal on my car, so I was included among the elite group of people that could park in this esteemed lot. I parked the car and went to work. During my day at work, I was worried that there was some other type of esoteric decal I should possess to park there. All I could do was hope for the best. When I got back, there was no parking ticket on my car and I was elated. I'd had a long, grueling day at work, and got back to no ticket. Additionally, I had my car there so I could easily DRIVE home, which was a great treat after being on my feet all day. I drove home feeling as though the lack of a parking ticket was the highlight of my day.
After that fateful first day of work, I began to get into the swing of things and had made a habit out of walking to the train station. It was nice to know that I could always drive though, if I needed to. Nearly two weeks after the first day, I received a mysterious piece of mail. I opened it and it was a parking ticket from that first day. Somehow it had gotten detached from my windshield and blown away. It was turned in and mailed to me. The ticket was crumpled and bleached as though it had sat outside and weathered the elements until it was delivered to me. The ticket that I received was the original one written, not a new one. This would not have been a problem, except the last day to remit payment had passed, and my $30 fine had jumped to a $100 fine. Despite feeling like this was extreme bullshit, I figured I would just pay it. I didn't have the time or the inclination to argue it in person, and I was working a good job now.

As I wrote the check for $100, I was still a little annoyed because 1. I thought I'd gotten away with it and 2. I had to pay more when it wasn't my fault. On the memo line of my check, I decided to have the last laugh. I wrote "ATTN: OFFICER FAGGOT". I dropped the check off at the police station ticket mailbox and figured that this would be the end of it.

Two days later, I got another mysterious piece of mail. I opened it up, and it was a court summons. There was a line on the form that said "CHARGE". Written on this line was the phrase "Moral Turpitude." After consulting a dictionary, I realized that this was not even a real thing in our zeitgeist. I did have a court date for several weeks later, though. I decided I would rather get this nonsense taken care of as soon as I could. I called on Wednesday to see if I could reschedule the court date. The lady on the phone was nice and said I could reschedule to Thursday evening. That sounded terrible, but I said okay.

The next day I went to court. I wore my glasses to look smart. It was not a real court, though. It looked like one but it was very small. In the room, it was just me and the judge. The judge told me about the charge against me for writing that word on the check and asked why I did it. I told him the story of thinking that I didn't have a ticket and then getting one, and the date having already been passed. I told him it was a great example of an ex post facto law. He agreed with me that this was unfair, but told me I didn't handle it in the right way and that was not what 'ex post facto' law meant. I told him that I know it wasn't mature, but that I was pretty sure that the first amendment still applied and I shouldn't be dragged to court for this. He told me he didn't write the summons and agreed with me. Then he asked me if I'd ever been in any trouble with the law before. I told him I didn't think so. He asked what that meant. I told him that there was a possibility that I have been arrested before, but I didn't think so because no charges were ever filed against me. He asked me what happened. I told him about my involvement with the Occupy protest and how they brought me to jail for civil disobedience but then let me go. He told me that he should have guessed, based on my glasses and manner of dress (like a hipster). He asked why they let me go. I told him that I was diabetic and made a big stink out of it. He told me he was diabetic too, and I was correct in guessing that it was Type II unlike my Type I diabetes. The judge asked if I had some sort of problem with law enforcement officers. I told him I did. He asked why. I said that it bothered me when cops wrote stupid parking tickets and set up speed traps and dealt with other seemingly innocuous things. I told him that when these things happen, I assume all criminals are locked up and everything is taken care of and the world is safe. He told me that he didn't agree with me, but that I was entitled to my opinion. Finally he noticed that it was starting to get late. I agreed with him and called him Judge Harry Stone, which was not his name, but I thought it made for a funny joke, given that it was night time. The judge asked if I had anything else to say, and I thought for a second and said "You can get anything you want in Alice's Restaurant". He looked confused for a second and then a wave of recognition came over his face. He said "Okay good. You're crazy. I mean, I wasn't trying to draft you or anything so it's not really...relevant here. But that was pretty funny, missy!" Finally, he ended up changing the parking ticket fine back to $30 which was a big improvement and vacated my charge of 'moral turpitude' on the grounds that it was 'stupid' (I imagine that's why).

I went outside into the hallway of the court building and was texting my friend that my legal woes were over. While I was standing there, Judge Harry Stone came out. He told me that I seemed like nothing but trouble, but had provided one of the more entertaining night court experiences he'd had in awhile. Then he asked me how old I was. I asked him why. He said because he thought it was weird that I referenced both Night Court and Arlo Guthrie during my 'deposition' but appeared to be only 20. I told him that I was 23 but I was really into pop culture. He laughed and said "Whatever" and wished me a good night. I told him to also have a good night, and that I hoped I would never see him again. He laughed and said "I wouldn't count on that." I have managed to stay out of trouble in the three days since that happened, including St. Patrick's Day, so I am feeling confident about my future of being a law abiding citizen.

And that is my story of my night in court.

So it turns out we get the keys to the new place the afternoon of the 16th.

I'm moving the kitchen things that night and on Saturday we'll be doing just be doing boxes etc with the trailer.

Sunday 18th we have hired a truck with a lifter on the back.

If anyone can make it for Saturday or Sunday to help us, it would be muchos appreciated, although we know a lot of people are going to Kendal's shindig.

Knowing there won't be heaps of people around is the reasoning behind a 2 stage move over the weekend, so that even if it is a small group of people we will be okay :)

I will make sure we have a load of cold drinks for everyone.

Thanks :D

Marquee information and prices.

On Saturday morning Adam and I went to check out the canopy company we found online, that looked to have good quality marquees at the best prices.

They are awesome!!

We can get a super strong commercial marquee with hexagonal legs and all metal connections and supports. It comes with a 5 year warranty too! All marquees come with a bag, guy ropes, pegs and wall toggles.

It definitely looks like the option of joining together two 3x3's works out cheaper and much better than the 6x3 stand alone marquee.

In terms of functionality, we obviously get much more flexibility with two 3x3's - we can use one or both and these marquees are designed to join together. We can purchase a gutter to run between the two 3x3's for $20 and we get 10% off when we buy 2 marquees making this a cheaper option.

The marquee guy asked us some questions regarding intended usage and pointed out to us when it is windy the gusts will pass between the two peaks on the 3x3's whereas with the 6x3 the wind gets caught in the 'fin' on the top of the marquee. Our current 6x3 cover is damaged and totally stretched out from wind.

There is an awning option for either marquee size, making them a better shelter in general. We saw the awnings on a marquee and they are simple to put up and down. It's $160 to get an awning down one side of the shelter (whether we go with the two 3x3's or the 6x3)

The two 3x3's come with 3 walls each - meaning we can totally enclose the 6x3 structure if needs be, whereas the 6x3 comes with 3 walls, but that means one of the long sides is always open. All of the wall types are of our choosing too, so we can get shade mesh, solid walls, windowed walls or doorway walls ect.

There are printing options also - basically we can pre-decore our marquee, for example with the DMF logo.

Basically for two 3x3's *with* the gutter to join then together it is $1496 - to get a 6x3 it is $1650.

Awnings down one side is $160.

Printing is extra, $313 per 3x3 or $460 per 6x3. I think this is a good option, as we will have decore marquees that will be perfect for any event we put on. Also saves us having to make decore for them for Samsara, for instance.

An example on pricing: if we bought the two 3x3's with a gutter, the awnings down one side and the DMF logo printing on both marquees it would be $2282.

This is a lot of money, yes, but this is an item that is warrantied for 5 years, comes with everything we need and possibly some extras, such as printing if we want it. These marquees are designed and built to last for a long time and anything else we need for it, is very local, they're just over in Bayswater.

Please post your thoughts, comments or questions - we need to get this moving as I do not think our current shelter will survive another round of RSF high winds.

Doof site win!

We have lift off.

Yesterday Adam, Rowan, Ash and I trekked back out to Lerderderg State Forest and found the perfect site (and a better backup site too):

It's located on:

and

Seems to good to be true no!?

See the map of the precise location here:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=-37.504251,144.253469&aq=&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=48.555061,79.013672&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=14

This is the view of the dancefloor/main area, from the track.

This is a closer view of the main area (although you can't fully see the cul-de-sacs either side of the d-floor) It's about 30 paces across both ways. The dome/stage would be setup on the opposite side to where I'm standing taking this photo:

Room for about 30 cars close to the main floor:

Plus there's a spot a few hundred metres up the road for DMF vehicles and room along the sides of the track for more cars.

This is up and on the way towards the chill/healing space, my shot of the actual clearing didn't work out and I stupidly took only 1 shot. This area is to the right and behind the main dancefloor area:

Ultimately this is a super lush site, enough of a clearing, lots of trees, a clearing away from the music for chill space and healing. Plenty of spots for camping and a reasonable amount of parking as well. There is a creek in a small gully and on the other side is a huge, pretty much sheer cliff face, it's in the direction we want to point the music at which is perfect!

We also found a backup/emergency site another 6 km's down the road - it isn't as good, but would suffice if we couldn't use this spot at the last minute.

From here we will be contacting the ranger :)

Conversations and communication.

In light of recent lj/email/fb activities I have come to the conclusion I need to step away from these spaces in terms of communicating about important or sensitive issues.

I feel incapable of acurately articulating myself in text, therefore I just shouldn't.

I will however take this opportunity to communicate as effectively as I can the following message:

If you have any issues or problems with me or my behaviour please approach me and I will gladly talk to you.

I have time next Monday night, next Wednesday night or can simply try to work around you to make a time to clear the air. Can maybe do later Sunday afternoon at a pinch as well.

From this point forwards I have nothing further to say to anyone, about anything, in an online space. I think the effort is effectively futile and doesn't serve anyone well.

In general, I would hope that if anyone had a problem with me they would feel comfortable to approach me so that we could talk about it face to face.

I would like to add that I feel uncomfortable at the prospect of your issues with me being represented in a public forum.

If you have a problem with me continuing to be the DMF treasurer or continuing to handle any of the other associated tasks (continuing with the DMF asset register, insuring the PA, maintaining the doof tub/s etc) please raise this with me asap.

I have disabled the comments, because as I have mentioned nothing further is up for discussion online as far as I am concerned.

I will gladly talk face to face to anyone about any of the above points I have raised, or about anything else for that matter :)

Thanks heaps, have a great weekend and see most of you on Sunday and if not then, some other time soon.

DMF crew meeting

Howdy DMF-ers,

DMF crew meeting is Sunday May 8th at 10am - 311 High Street, Ashburton.

No one has raised any issue or objection to this date, but I am making it morning time just in case anyone has last minute Mothers Day things on.

Before you piss and moan that 10am is too early, I have been keeping an eye on the G-calender, there is nothing on the night beforehand, save a bit of light painting for Brendan's photo-thing AND I will provide breakfast for the meeting attendees.

Thus, in light of the serious task of not running out of bacon, who is coming?

Insofar I have:

Me
Ash
Amanda
Corch
Adam
Anth
Jess S
Luke D
Loz
Brendan
Andras
Pamela
Aj
Oj
Pete H
Twigz
Muppet
Joni
Sarah
Oliver

Please let me know :)

Also, would folks prefer the agenda on lj or on facepoop?

Thanks!
