Fur on corduroy couch [25 Jul 2008|09:33pm]

cat_lovers

[saintwithasw0rd]
Okay, I know that this was just asked a couple of weeks ago in one of these cat communities, so my apologies, but what were the recommendations, other than the whole rubber glove/wet rag pain in the butt, of getting up the fur from a corduroy couch?  I know some vacuums were recommended, too.

Thanks!

Run for Your Lives! [25 Jul 2008|08:42pm]

cat_lovers

[calysto]
The empty box from a twelve-pack of pop was sitting near my desk on the floor.

It seems to have sprouted four furry legs, a furry tail, and is now strutting around the room in a suspiciously cat-like fashion.

Aliens from the planet Pepsi are invading! Run for your lives!

...

...either that, or my beloved kitty has got a box stuck on her head... again.

The Brady Bunch - A Runt Surfaces [25 Jul 2008|10:25am]

cat_lovers

[wyntermoonwolf]
I've noticed that one of the foster kittens isn't growing as fast as the others and that I could feel his ribs a little more than the other kittens so I decided to watch him when I brought in food. (Hereafter referred to as Runty because I can't tell which "black male" kitten is who from the paperwork - and there's three of them!) Yesterday morning, I laid down a new kind of canned food and it was clearly a hit - the tabby was growling up a storm and I had to move the four other black kittens around to give her room. But Runty only took a few bites and then backed off. He did the same thing last night with the canned food, a different flavor.

I'm concerned for him - he's probably one of the sweeter kittens and is always quick to hop up on my lap and stay there for the entire duration of my visit. I haven't picked up any formula recently because they're old enough for solid foods so I went to PetCo this morning and picked up several cans. I sat down a bowl of formula and they all rushed it except for Runty who was still inside the small kitty condo. I picked him up and sat him down next to the bowl and was pleased to see him start lapping it up.

He drank for a minute and then climbed up on my lap. I had brought a small pet syringe with me and decided to force-feed him a few more CC's of the formula - he drank it all but did protest a little by clenching his mouth shut towards the end. Protesting is good!

Runty will be getting extra formula until I see some results from it in either bulk or activity. I also picked up a bag of Wellness kitten food because I was also concerned about the kitten food I got from the shelter in that the pellets may be too big and Wellness had smaller bits.

Send some kitty purrs his way!

anyone set this up before - i have 3 cats and 1 of them is to be willed to someone who lives out of state. I know how to set up the will but do you normally then put in money for a flight for the person? what about a caretaker for the pets before they can be picked up for their new respective homes. help!

Poem [25 Jul 2008|06:55am]

cat_lovers

[tigerlaura]

I ran across this poem yesterday and wanted to share it and dedicated to everyone who has adopted an "unwanted" cat- who is now a very loved kitty :)

I adopted your cat today.
The one you left at the pound.
The one you had for ten years
and no longer wanted around.

I adopted your cat today.
Do you know he's lost weight?
Do you know he's scared and depressed
and has lost all faith?

I adopted your cat today.
He had fleas and a cold,
but don't worry --
You've unburdened your load.

I adopted your cat today.
Were you having a baby or moving away?
Did you suddenly develop allergies
or was there no reason he couldn't stay?

I adopted your cat today.
He doesn't play or eat much.
He's very depressed,
but he will learn again to trust.

I adopted your cat today
and here he will stay.
He's found his forever home
and a warm bed to lay.

I adopted your cat today
and I will give him all that he could need.
Patience, love, security, and understanding.
Hopefully, he will forget your selfish deed.

Cats and harnesses: anyone had this problem? [25 Jul 2008|12:05am]

cat_lovers

[francisbmewbly]
While staying with my parents as I finished up college, my cat got fat.  Well, obsese is a better word for it.  I am trying to get her on a weightloss routine, and one of the things I'm doing is trying to leash train her.  I say trying to, because I bought a harness for her, and planned on putting it on her every day for a little bit. But when I did that, she slinks around like a hand is on her back.  She literally crawled around.  She obviously was not a fan of the harness.  Has anyone had this problem and found a way to correct it, or should I go to a collar instead?

Massachusetts Cats Still Need Homes [24 Jul 2008|05:14pm]

cat_lovers

[helpthekitties]
Hi, Everyone.

There's been success already in finding homes for two (Chrissy and Makuro) of the three cats about whom I posted the other day (http://community.livejournal.com/cat_lovers/4688664.html). Prince is getting envious, though, and wants someone to take in him, too.  Also, ...

My other three cats, all girls, need a permanent, adoptive home or homes (or long-term fostering, perhaps all the way to the last months of 2009).  Family circumstances have forced me into housing where I can't keep them.

Right now, they're being fostered near Boston, Massachusetts.  Ally, a two-year-old tabby, has been chilling in Somerville; Koneko-chan, a six-year-old calico, is being fostered in Wakefield; and Kagami, a one-year-old female tabby, has been playing in Jamaica Plain.  But the time has come for me to get them settled in their long-term place(s) right away—with your help.

I'm aiming at the areas around Boston and Lowell, Massachusetts.

All three are indoor, domestic short-hair cats with all their claws.  They all had their rabies vaccine last September.

Photos of them are at these addresses:

If you're thinking of helping out any of these wonderful kitties, or you know someone who might be interested, please, email me at helpthekitties@gmail.com.

I'd also appreciate suggestions about other online places to look for a potential new home or homes.

Thank you so much if you can help me and these great girls, with suggestions or, even better, a new home for these precious creatures.

Neuter questions [24 Jul 2008|04:06pm]

cat_lovers

[glamgirlnj]
So, one day, poor Virtue will have to go in for the big chop, swaying the estrogen level in this house back to it's rightful place (GO LADIES!)

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about going to a clinic to get him neutered. It's a clinic run by the city of Toronto, and to be honest, cost is a huge factor. It's 68$ to get him neutered at the clinic, versus (I'm assuming) 250+ at the vet's office. Obviously, I would not risk his health for money EVER, but if going to a clinic is just as safe as a vet's office, than 200$ is a lot (especially right now). I've done some reading on neutering, and it's much less evasive than spaying from what I've read. Do any of you have any thoughts/concerns/advice on this matter? Also, is it normal to wait until both the testicles have dropped to neuter a male cat?

Thank you very much guys, you're always my best resource :)

bad grooming experience [24 Jul 2008|10:09am]

[nolavampiregal]
[ mood | stressed ]

So I had to get my kitty Shadow shaved today. I have to do that every two years or so because she gets so matted (3 inch long hair) and refuses to let me brush her regularly or even cut the mats out. I decided to take her where she has gone once before.

We get there and they take her out of her kennel and then parade her in front of a bunch of dogs on tables waiting to get groomed. She was behaving pretty well and the groomer even gave her a kiss on the head for being such a good girl. Well then all hell broke loose when they decided to turn the dryer on to dry the dog next to her (it sounds like a vacuum cleaner). She went apeshit and bit the groomer really bad 4x(she has a huge gash in her palm). So they finally turned off the dryer and someone came to help her. She bled all over my cat. Then I get charged 60 bucks. I got her home and had to immediately bathe her (which is usually fine, but she was super stressed). Her fur is all gapped and she had the lady's blood all over her. I am now feeling two things...angry that I was charged 60 dollars and she looks horrible, and worried that I am going to get sued for her being bitten (like if it gets infected or something).

I am just stressed out and worried...maybe needlessly. What do you guys think? Has anyone been a groomer or had their cat shaved and can give me the rundown? I feel like such a bad mommy.

[24 Jul 2008|06:20am]

[bleed_lovely]
Hi there, about a week ago I posted about having trouble with a foster cat, Bunny, peeing on things.
I talked with my family and since we've given her her own litter box, done our best to keep her relaxed and unstressed and have been keeping her separated from Gandalf, the cat she was constantly fighting with, she's stopped peeing on things completely and has even several times come into the house just to use her litter! (She loves being outside and going in the dirt so this kind of really shocked us!)
I'm aware it's only been one week however before she'd been peeing on things at least once a day, so seven days of no peeing is just fabulous! ^^

Thank you guys very much for all your suggestions! ^__^

It goes apace [24 Jul 2008|07:13am]

Second night in a row with two kitties on the bed and minimal fighting (there were a few hissing exchanges, and one short-lived incident where Mom threw everyone off the bed after getting tagged in the thigh by a mis-aimed paw. Everyone was back on and napping after a half-hour). But overall, not bad. I had bed kitties! :)

Here's something I figured out that might help some of you...

Belladonna, our kitten (who's almost 1! Wow time flies!), likes playing with the toilet paper in the guest bathroom-- specifically, she loves unrolling it.

I finally had the brainstorm to turn the TP around on the holder, backwards, so that the dangly bit is against the wall. Thus to unroll it you spin it up, not down, so when the cat spins it down it doesn't unroll.

I've seen claw marks on the roll a few times now, so she's definitely been playing with it, but I haven't walked into the bathroom to find the whole thing unrolled onto the floor anymore!

My cat died... [24 Jul 2008|11:17am]

cat_lovers

[lillith_eve]
I don't know if these types of posts are allowed here, but I see that this community is full of cat lovers and I don't know where else to go. My cat of 13 years died yesterday and I feel like I can tear my insides out. She was with me since I was two. She had a fungal infection that completely ravaged her face. I don't know who to confide in because none of my friends are here and none of them like cats any way. They aren't even my friends because I'm in a new class. My older sis is in another country and I can't talk to her. I can't even bear to cry in front of my parents because every time I cry they keep telling me not to cry so much and instead pray for my cat without realizing that all I want is to cry my heart out and just start screaming. I can't cry now even because my dad is here and so my fingers and hands hurt a lot. I can't look around the house because I keep remembering how my cat used to do something, and my throat starts to hurt and I have to think of something else so I don't cry. My beloved cat is gone and can never touch her again or listen to her mew. She will never ever annoy me again, make me laugh or wake me up at 5 in the morning while she calls my mom for fish. She won't sit by me again while I study, or when I watch TV, and she won't go into the cabinets where she's not allowed. She has been with me for 13 years and she's gone.

I didn't even see her die. She was semi-unconscious for 2 days and I was crying by her side because I thought she would die. Then she started breathing normally and I thought it was fine and I left to play the computer. Then I heard my dad praying but he does tha so I thought it was fine but I found out she died and he didn't even call me. I heard she was struggling for a short while and he didn't even call me. I didn't even get to hold her hand.

I know I am totally rambling but I just need to get all this out because I can't talk to anyone, so please just say something so I can talk a bit or have someone finally say something to comfort me instead of telling me stupid things like don't cry. Thanks a lot.
