Grandad's portrait.

it's that time of year and the jacarandas are in bloom again. Those mauve trees are so good that if they didn't exist we'd have to invent one. A print of this one is mounted on our wall:

The original was painted in 1903 by R. Godfrey Rivers, a significant figure in the history of painting locally, and is in the Queensland art gallery. This one is across our street:

Apparently it's descended from the one in the picture, because "ALL of the jacarandas carpeting Brisbane come from a single tree planted in the City Botanic Gardens by superintendent Walter Hill in 1864." ( article last year in the Courier Mail). "It is considered to be the first jacaranda planted in Australia and is featured in perhaps Queensland's most famous painting..."

The jacaranda is not indigenous to Australia, so how did the one in the painting get here?
"Wheat was exported to Argentina, Brazil and Chile in those days and the ships would come back empty except for gneiss ballast rocks," gardens curator Mr McKinnon said. "Hill got the rocks for the gardens and also got a jacaranda seed from a ship's captain. The rocks are still used widely around the gardens."

The tree alas was blown over in a storm in 1980. Mr. McKinnon keeps a slab cut from its bough in his office.

For many years, now-retired John Massey, the gallery's canny senior education officer, would have baskets of blossoms picked up from the park and deposited on the floor in front of the painting, as though they had fallen from it overnight. He would show school children around, exciting them with the mystery of the spring blooms.

Better Late than...
As always the HP Lovecraft Film Fest was a grand time!

There were many really wonderful films.

Two were of note to steampunk fans:

The Amazing Screw-on Head 2006

It's been available on DVD for some time, but it was a treat to see it on the BIG screen.

The Book Dealers 2007

"In 1893, two book dealers arrive at a prairie home to pick-up their latest occult acquisition. They discover a dark supernatural force has been unleashed upon the home's owners and use turn of the century technology to exorcise the eldritch evil. A Steam-Punk tale inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft."

Phantom Parking Lots
I have recently taken to the practice of exploring the surrounding region in which I live with online satellite imagery. When I find something worth looking into, I track it down on foot. It's interesting what you can find out about your own region by jumping on googlemaps.com and snooping around with the satellite preview. I find myself dragging the maps along until I discover something that sticks out.

Recently I was exploring the surrounding woods of a common neighborhood road I travel on a daily basis. I noticed a road in the satellite data that I never knew existed; a long serpentine path leading to what appeared to be giant clearings in the middle of nowhere. I pinpointed the exact location of the road entrance, and decided to make a day of exploring it on foot. The grounds of a newly renovated business building on Hackett Hill shrouded this road quite well from the eyes of passersby, but once I found the road and slipped under the rusty gate, I was hooked, ignoring the "No Trespassing" signs, of course.

The farther down the road I walked, the more strangely peaceful it became. The asphalt was old, grass growing out of its potholes and cracks. All along the miles of silent road hedged in by overgrowth stood tall and broken street lamps. The road wound around in the woods, leading to various phantom parking lots, empty and silent. Apparently this was some sort of abandoned city project started some time ago.

It was a strangely beautiful experience, walking along these roads and standing in these great open parking lots in the middle of the woods
at the height of the Autumn season. I have a compulsion to visit this place again, but at night next time.

Anyway, here are a few shots I took on my travels.

To celebrate the disjointed nature of my circumstance I'm going pass some time posting random crap from my hard drive. This is in lieu of content of a rich and rewarding nature.

NEWS JUST IN! We got an apartment in Elizabeth Bay, a couple of klicks away in a leafy suburb without the junkie prostitute dross that litters the street corners here. Gosh it's going to be quiet. I'll have to record some of their methadone-inflected nasal screeching to lull myself to sleep.

This is just in the nick of time too as Kel departs for India tomorrow and I'm a colourful mess when it comes to handling deals of a crucially important nature. I start sweating unnecessarily.
After weeks of humming along at a low persistent stress level it can now settle for a period until the day we move all this glass and fragile shit we've accumulated.

This is an old snap I was just sent from the Triptych performance a few years back.
An illustration series I developed for the musical and spoken word performance was used on the night.

Chaos Theory reviews
Chaos Theory Age of Chaos scents....

(I reviewed these for 2 of you, I am 500+ deep in email messages so I can't remember you exact emails so here are the reviews. I hope you both see them here)
:)

CLXVI:

In Bottle: Super orange

On Skin: This is yummy, very citrus, orange to be specific. It's soft though, not tart... like an orange creamy candy. Soft and powdery, like orange pixie stix... wait, it smells like PEZ!!!! It's very well blended and the only notes I'm getting from it are orange, sugar, maybe a little vanilla. The powderyness may be from a velvety light amber. It's gorgeous and wish I had gotten a bottle of this!!!

XIV

In Bottle: Sweet and planty

On Skin: This has a very organic feel. It's sweet though and I love it. I smell greenery and soft dry grasses, maybe hay. It's warm and comforting. I smell a pretty floral note too, nothing perfumey, more simple. As it dries down, it takes on a more sour floral feel on me, but still quite nice. Overall it is green and gold in tone on me. I would call it a farm or field scent to create a visual.

XCII:

In Bottle: Sweet and feral

On Skin: I don't tlike this one... sorry. It is very feral, an animal musk of some sort... maybe civet? It smells like an animal in heat, with a sweet background note. Very red in tone, a bit resinous. Eeek, it's terrible on me, I'm sorry I can't review it any further.

LXXXIII:

In Bottle: Sweet and spicy

On Skin: Clove and a bit of cinnamon or cardamom. Very intense. There is also a bit of a cologne note in the back ground. Yeah, spicy masculine cologne. I get also a bit of leather. It's a little funky to me, something isn't right. It's probably the clove because clove usually hates me with a passion. It has that metallic note and it's very dominant here.

Hahahaha.
Really, this is truly Safe for work porn, I kid you not.

Also, I think this thing right here was made specifically for me or POSSIBLY by my doppleganger:

If I could think of any place I could actually wear this thing and not get evil looks and possibly my butt kicked I would buy it up in an instant. It's like I am in the closet for wanting to dress like a LUNATIC.

Henryton Sanitarium, MD
The town of Henryton was a small town neighboring Ellicot City and Sykesville, and featured an immense 4-winged hospital in which African Americans infected with  tuberculosis were sent to parish. Once the vaccine for TB was created, the hospital was used to house and treat children with mental/learning disabilities. The town was evacuated in 1985 due to asbestos.

I've been here twice now, and this town is AWESOME. there is definitely some paranormal activity occuring here -- the constant feeling of  being watched/followed, objects moving on their own, and voices.

The rest are here )

Sale/Swap Bump
I've finally caught up on shipping and the last of the packages from my last sale are going out tomorrow.  Hence, a bump is finally in order!

Most prices have been lowered, so check it out.  For the record, I'll swap very generously for a bottle/partial of MVJBA Pancake Breakfast (I'll give you 2x what your Pancake cost you... or its equivalent, if it's a partial bottle).  Sale is in my journal, and all prices are well within price caps. :)

Current Mood: dorky

13 October 2008 @ 07:51 pm

Instant Gratification Monday (part two) will be underway shortly! I will be doing simple custom work from approximately 8 - 10 p.m. (eastern time) today on a first-come, first-served basis. Your humple bumble humble wireworker is still recovering from having been knocked flat on her back by a variety of illnesses last week, and may require a nap on very short notice, but I will do my best.

If you can describe what you want to me in an LJ comment, I will make it. My normal $40 minimum does NOT apply to this. Want a pair of $10 earrings? You can have 'em. Simple is the operative word here -- if you want something very specific or very complicated, please place a custom request in the usual manner.

I'll be photographing things in small batches and uploading the photos to Flickr throughout the session. If you like your item, you can purchase it on the spot, and if you pay by midnight (eastern time) today, your item will ship tomorrow morning. (This does not apply to echecks, as those have to clear our bank before I can ship your order.) If you don't like what I've made, just say the word and I'll toss it in the "stuff for future updates" pile, no hard feelings.

Caveats and restrictions: I'm limited to the materials I have in stock (but since I stock over a thousand varieties of shiny objects, that's not much of a restriction) and I reserve the right to limit this to a maximum of 12 requests and one item per customer, as well as to say "that's going to take too long to do today, let's set it up as a regular custom order."

Comments are open as of now. Go for it! Please tell me what you want, what size it should be, and either how much you want to spend or what you'd like to barter. If your request does not contain those three details, I will move on to the next request in the queue, and will return to your request only if I have enough time left at the end. I will periodically post an updated list of what I've finished and what's pending in the queue.

(A note about barter: I currently have an enormous pile of untested imps and more perfume and bath products than any one person really needs to own, so I am not presently looking for BPAL or other perfume or bath products.)

The webcam is being uncooperative, alas, so it will not be on after all.

Not a sales post or a decant circle...
But a "What BPAL should I wear to X?" query.

Specifically, I'm going to a Magnetic Fields concert tomorrow night. Any suggestions as to what I should wear?
