It's been a while since I've written, but I did this for a Secret Santa thing at LF between Jaters and I liked it, so I thought I'd tackle a prompt with it, too.

Title: Playground Sand
Prompt Used: un_love_you: 09. Always wondered what this'd be like.
Pairing/Characters: Jack/Kate, Aaron
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: I don't own Lost, obviously.
Warnings: Inspiration from the S5 sneak peak, though I doubt this would spoil anything at all for you even if you didn't see it.
Extra Note: I've been reading a lot of Gabriel Garcia Marquez so if you can notice his small influences in this fic it's extra literature points for you!

The white sand sprinkled past her toes, collected in her flip flops, and gleamed, the light reflecting off of it’s small crystals, dancing in the strong light of the mid-afternoon sun.

This was not the moist collection of island sand that bathed in the waves of the ocean and sunk beneath her feet. This was not the hot, dry sand that sat above the tide and plagued her belongings and got caught in her clothes.

This sand was the falsely allocated confection of playground dirt: a mother’s bane at bath time, the grime beneath a young child’s fingers that told of pirate stories and super hero adventures. The sand that held both bacteria and buried treasure, boxed in neatly beneath plastic slides, swing sets, and the collection of park benches Kate found herself sitting on as she kicked the white speckles with a reminiscent smile.

This was not sand that she wished to sink from.

Lifting her sunglasses above her head she squinted from the California sun and admired the colors of the Saturday afternoon: the playground tunnels painted a vibrant navy blue, the green of the trees in full spring bloom. Everything about the scene matched the euphoria of her mood, all enveloped in a light breeze that God himself must have been in.

“Mommy, look!” A small voice proclaimed proudly, a call that could have cried out to any of the dozen mothers scattered around the park. It was Kate, however, that reacted intently to the voice, as if a computer chip wired her to respond to that “Mommy” alone, and let all other frequencies fall to a distant white noise.

“I’m watching, goober!” She responded, laughing, as she watched the small boy gripping the monkey bars, squealing monkey noises as his tiny hands alternated rungs effortlessly. The man beneath him crouched lowly, putting considerable effort into carrying the boy on his shoulders and allowing for both of their heights beneath the metal bars.

“You are a monkey!” Kate laughed as Aaron reached the final rung and made a proud gesture of accomplishment. Jack reached above his head, picking the child up, feeling the nudge of age on his back as he straightened.

Aaron shot off quickly towards the slide, kicking the sand up beneath his feet as he ran. “I’ve never seen him so happy,” Kate said, standing up and walking towards the base of the monkey bars where Jack stood smiling, cleanly shaven and casually dressed.

“I didn’t know he had this much energy in him,” Jack said as he watched Aaron climb to the top of the slide fearlessly, checking to make sure he had an audience before sliding down swiftly, his feet barely making contact with the soft sand at the base of the slide before taking off back to the top once again.

“I swear he was never like this before. He loves spending time with you.” Kate stated simply, hoping Jack understood the words she was not saying: that it was his addition to their lives that had brought this level of happiness to each of them.

“I want to take a picture.” Kate proclaimed, turning back to grab her purse and the camera inside with which she had begun to compulsively chronicle the smallest moments of Aaron’s life.
Aaron had returned to the ground for the second time, and Jack grabbed him quickly before he could sprint off once again. “You too, Jack.” Kate said, as she motioned for them to stand together.

She was struck by a remarkable sense of domesticity as the shutter snapped quickly, capturing the picture that would later be framed and displayed proudly as an illustration of normalcy: a proud picture of a day in the park with the sun shining brightly behind them, faces glowing with no trace or shadow of the lie that would later consume them.

Months later, it was always that moment she would return to when she felt her most alone. Not just alone in the large house or alone at night, but alone in secrets, alone in the most striking, crippling sense of the word.

“How much longer are we staying?” Aaron asked as Jack stood up from the picture and Kate returned the camera to her purse.

Kate smiled, seeing the young child, his eager face damp from the light trace of sweat. “We’ll stay as long as you want to,” Kate committed.

The playground sand had begun to accumulate beneath his fingernails, blackening his hands with the safe sense of adventure that he needed and the childhood he deserved, even if it wasn’t the one he was intended to have.

So this is just another answer to a prompt for words_challenge, I got first for the last one I did with birthdays, so I figured I'd take another shot. Just ignore if you wish, gotta post it here to enter.

Title: Not A Chance

Word Count: Exactly 150
Prompt use (how you included this week's prompt): "A Chance Encounter?" Just..encountering someone on a regular basis. It's a fun concept, and I have no idea where it came from.

This came to 263 words when I first wrote it...it was painful to cut down. And I didn't want to do two 2nd person fics in a row, but it worked.

Not A Chance

You walk the same stretch of sidewalk everyday. It’s after you buy your bagel, before you reach the next block for coffee, that’s when you see him. You believe that he’s on the same path. He’s on his way to work, and like you he’s bound to a set of obligations waiting for him back home. Obligations of marriage, loyalty; obligations binding him to this routine that he walks. You imagine that like yourself, he wants to break this routine, but his mind catches him, reminding him of the destinations he has to reach. You imagine he sees you as well, and wants to acknowledge the relationship that you two unwittingly have, this chance encounter every day, stuck in this limbo of routine and time. You imagine speaking to him and leaving your obligations behind. But today, you walk the path, leading you the only place you know to go.

So I'm back from Hawaii! I had a really great time, thanks to everyone who wished me a safe trip, I had one, but it was LONG. I left Monday at about 3 PM and got back here on Tuesday at like 10 AM. Yeah I don't understand it either, it's the whole time zone things. The trip back didn't feel that long, the trip going did. I was about to beat my head against something until I fell asleep on the way there.

I have the pictures on my computer but I still have to upload them on to photobucket. After I do that I'll post here with a full trip update and pictures.

I'm so ridiculously tired, all I want to do is sleep since I've come back. And I have done that. I keep accidentally falling asleep when I shouldn't, and waking up really confused as to where I am and what time it is. I'm really bad with the whole jet lag thing apparently.

And I have to walk 2 miles for Walk for Diabetes tomorrow morning. Damn it.

The clatter of keyboards and the ringing of telephones melts into the customary background of office life. Bored, thoughtless faces are scattered over the room, paying no attention to anything but the soft glow of light coming from the screen in front of them. Today is just another day, and everyone around you performs the usual routine that is necessary to earn the paycheck at the end of the week, and that is all that matters. You woke up with a hope of something different, hope that today could be your day, but the hope was quickly distinguished when you realized that the world had not stopped spinning just for you. You were greeted with a “Happy Birthday,” and it soon became a distant memory to everyone but you as the humming of fax machines resumed, removing any hint of the words lingering in the air. This is your day.

14 DAYS UNTIL HAWAII!

I'm leaving Wednesday morning for Charlotte, then going to Atlanta, then out to Honolulu. 13 hour flight! What do you do for 13 hours? There is no task that can occupy you for that long.

And my laptop is going in to get fixed tomorrow so I don't have to use this computer I'm on anymore! Whee! Though they may have to wipe my harddrive and I will not be a happy camper uploading 1,000 songs back into iTunes.

Addison would probably give them a look, then walk out again, wondering why Fox Mulder was having sex with Dwight...

Jack/Meredith? It would probably be an alternate to the series finale, when Jack Bristow gets shot by Sloane he makes it to the hospital, where Meredith has to struggle to keep him alive and make difficult decisions and narrarate her surgical career.

Is there any such thing as One/Eight fluff?
Jack Shepard/John Locke? They have their rough angsty times, but they laughed together in White Rabbit after rolling all over each other and they had good conversations about being crazy. I see the fluff in there with these two.

Suggest a title for a Seven/Twelve hurt/comfort fic.
Dwight/Addison. Oh God. How about, "What the hell are we doing in a fic together?"

What kind of plot device would you use if you wanted Four to deflower One?
Michael Vaughn deflower Jack Shepard? Oohhh dear Lord the plot devices. They're both so amazing one look would probably be all it takes.
