08:40 pm - ENGL110
I hope that at least some of you are familiar with the ways of English courses because I am a Life Sci and those courses are unchartered territory for me. I'm taking ENGL110S right now and it has confirmed all my suspicions about English majors being some sort of wizards because it's all gibberish to me. I can't wait to return to the safety of my type I multiple choice exams...

My question is: do I need to pass BOTH the essay component AND the exam component to receive a credit in the course? I had some courses where you need to pass both lab and exam, so even if you are getting 100% on the labs if you have a 49% in the labs you don't get the credit. Is this the same for English? The exam looks really hard because you need to be able to remember so many details of all the works covered, which are plenty...

So, you English majors (I know you're out there), any knowledge regarding that?

Also, if anyone knows the stats of an ENGL110 class they took in the past (i.e. avg, grade distribution), that would be incredibly helpful, too.

Thanks!

10:45 pm - "Morrissey has been dead to me since 1987 when The Smiths broke up"

One of the greatest songs recorded of all time.

He's clearly not performing with The Smiths here, but it is greatness all the same.

Dear Morrissey, you are one Piece of Pure MAN.

I just don't know WHAT is happening in this video.  All I know is that Morrissey just gets better looking with age, and that fan really loves him.

If I were a man and a music legend, I'd perform in a suit and tie too.

03:24 pm - you're the one-eye love

So I get chronic headaches/migraines, right?  Anything from fatigue, to PMS, to an endless succession of loud noises, to too much sunlight, to not wearing my glasses nearly enough, to rapidly changing weather can result in a headache, which can then escalate to a stomach-upsetting migraine if not treated fast enough.

Unfortunately, I've kind of had to deal with them and try to get through my day with a head that's pounding and making me feel nauseous and every little noise is just so aggravating and the sun is way too bright.

I've learned to distinguish the different kinds of headaches I get.
This is fun and informative for you.  Now you know why I can suddenly get very grumpy and wish people would cease to exist and crave a cool, dark, QUIET place.

Behold.  Here is the Scale O' Headache:

1.  Sinus Headaches
These are pretty treatable and tend to hurt in the nasal region.  A few sprays of nasal mist up my nose and usually I'm good to go.

2.  PMS Headache
These are accompanied by the irresistible urge to cry for no reason and mad cravings for chocolate.  They come and go before and during that one special week a month and Advil generally does nothing.  It is believed to be a side-effect of The Pill, but it came to a choice of either being ON The Pill and getting headaches (which I'm used to anyway) or NOT being on The Pill and suffering through these uterus-crushing cramps.

3.  Rain Headache
This is a dull, yet irritating pain.  It comes on just before it's about to rain, or if the weather is cloudy one minute, sunny the next.  Moody weather messes up my system.  This past week has not been a friend to me, weather-wise.

4.  Full-Out Migraine
These are happening less frequently, thank God!  It would start with these swirling orbs and my vision would go all wacky.  I would see these bright, swirling eddies in my eyes and couldn't be able to focus my eyes on anything.  This would be followed by one MOTHER of a headache, making every place on my head hurt like an effer.  I'd have to take a couple Advil Liquid-Gels and be out of commission for the rest of the day.  I'm afraid to take anything stronger because I'm afraid of taking medication in general and my body is so sensitive that anything, anything at all affects it.  Prednizone (which I had to take after The Big Bee Incident) made me loopy and sick to my stomach and light-headed.  I'd much rather take an herb or natural remedy or tea.  It's too bad naturopaths and homeopaths are so darn expensive!  I wish doctors could prescribe herbal products!
Anyway, this doesn't happen too much anymore.

5.  Everyday headache
Could be brought on by:
--not wearing my glasses and/or contacts
--the sun being too bright
--the general noisiness of life
--unhealthy diet
The region it hits is just above my left eye, right underneath the eyebrow.  This is the eye with the droopy eyelid, which makes me concerned.  My vision is worse in that eye than the other, and when I'm tired or my eyelids swell because of an allergic reaction, this eyelid droops so much it looks almost shut.  Why am I an effing Cyclops?  Why does my head have to inflict me so, making me have to skip out of social events or go to bed early or be unproductive at work/school?  Is it the chocolate addiction?  The caffeine?  Poor genes?  Way too much estrogen humanly possible for one single woman?

Like, come on, God.  Give my head a break.

I'm in the mood for some nice hot milk… I don't know why. I usually never give into cravings, but this craving seems like a necessity. So I'll bite this time.

Regardless I can't microwave it since my mom hears a pin drop, so I have to quietly boil it.

Wish me luck ;)

02:44 pm - il pleut
This morning I walked to work on an alien earth.

The earth has been ravaged apart by a torrential storm and rains that never stop.
Lightning flashes, thunder shakes the ground, and the sky bleeds sheets of water.

As I slowly made the 30 minute trek to work (a combination of tiredness due to braving the storm from Burlington to Grimsby at 11:30 last night + monthly annoyances + a kick-boxing work-out two days ago rendered me a slow and sore individual), I was overcome by a feeling of powerlessness.

Powerless to nature and the way it can disappoint, disarray and destruct.

The streets were lined with white clumps of what looked like snow.  When I got closer, it turned out to be small, hard piles of hail.  The ground was wet, slippery with fallen leaves and all to frequently, broken branches and other tree debris.

Once at work, the entire basement was flooded with water, destroying all of the Kids Church sound equipment and the carpet of a Sunday School room.  It took five of us with squeegees, mops, and dust-pans to fill two garbage bins full of water.  That took about an hour of our time, even though one of the administrators was there at 7 a.m.

Just to make the workday better, the printer has decided to be jammed (again!) and require service.  Since my job this week while my boss is on vacation consists of printing and photocopying the curriculum for September, there's nothing I can really do.

Our huge community BBQ (which took WEEKS, literally weeks since I started working here in June) was cancelled on Sunday because of the rain.  We're trying to reschedule for August 24, but that just means we'll have to do everything all over again.

I could really do without this weather putting a damper on my plans, every day.

02:08 pm - lucky 23

So here it is.  The obligatory birthday post.

I have been COMPLETELY unproductive today at work.   But I'm a princess for the day, so  . . . whatev.  Louise said.

Happy Birthday also to:

Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961)
Don Knotts (1924-2006)
Norman Jewison (1926)
Yusuf Islam a.k.a Cat Stevens (1948)
Robin Williams (1951)
John Lovitz (1957)
Charlotte Gainsbourg (1971)
Josh Hartnett (1978)
Damian Marley (1978)
Blake Lewis (1981)
Michael Spiar (1983)
Erin Marie Hutchinson (1985)
Kid in Eric's Sports Camp (circa 2000?)

As you can see, I am in good, talented (if not slightly wack-o) company.  I didn't know that I share birthday with Charlotte Gainsbourg.  I love her multi-talented Parisian face.  Please watch her as Heath (RIP) Ledger's girlfriend in "I'm Not There," which is a film you should see anyway.

I'm not freaking out about 23 and being all like, "OMG!  I'm 23!  What have I accomplished?  Why don't I have a career?  Why am I still living in my parents' basement?  Why don't I have a husband and baby like half the people my age that live in this small-town and/or are impatient Christian children desparate to marry?" because dude . . . that stuff don't matter.  It's not like I'm 23 going on 12 or anything (only on some days) and it's not like important life events have an expiration date.  Like you're supposed to graduate by the time you're 21 and have a career on the go.  Like you're supposed to start paying mortgage on a house and saving up for your wedding when you're 25.  Like the only age you can have children is 20-30 and then that's it!  You're cut off!

Things happen for people at different times.  A line drawn in the sand is a line drawn in the sand.  I don't understand that quote but I think it has something to do with age being but a number.

Besides, 23 is a lucky number, according to the theory/law of Discordianism.

Good things are coming this way!

09:10 pm - FREN-010
Hi, I will be a first year Commerce student this fall, and my program allows me to have one elective.

I've pre-registered for FREN-010, but now I'm not too sure. I'm interested in the language now, but I've only taken French up to grade 9 in high school, and took German in those other years. Thus, I don't actually remember a lot of French.

Would it be recommended to go ahead with this course? Or would this course be too advanced for me / I will have trouble with it? Or is the French taught in 010 easier than it seems, and does not require more than basic French? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. :) Thank you!

Barenaked Ladies singer arrested on drug charges

Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page has been charged in New York state with drug possession.

TV and radio news reports out of Fayetteville, N.Y., say the singer was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance after cocaine and marijuana were found in an apartment just east of Syracuse.

The 38-year-old was apparently arrested last Friday and faces charges alongside two women.

Page's manager, Terry McBride, said from Vancouver that he won't comment while the matter is before the courts but is confident that Page will be cleared.

Until then, he said it's business as usual for the Barenaked Ladies.

Page was reportedly released on bail but is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

03:13 pm - PHIL 158 - Critical Thinking and Any Easy Winter Term 200-level courses??
Has anyone taken PHIL 158 - Critical Thinking through correspondence? If so, could you comment on the workload/difficulty/assignments + exams?

Any recommendations for easy winter term 200-level + above courses? I need 2 more credits for the winter term! I have all the bio prereqs and most of psych, but definitely would be open to taking courses in different fields :)

My computer has finally kicked the bucket, this time fo' sho, so I'm posting this from my dad's laptop. So, I've been not up to much except working and living lately. I feel lazy and like I need to go back to school, but I don't know what to go for and I don't want to go for nothing.

I've fallen in love, with a handsome, intelligent, sexy, picky man who loves me for my brain. I'm riding that deleriously happy stage of love. Anything else? Noooot really. :-/

06:10 pm - audrey and i

I believe in pink, I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.
---Audrey Hepburn

I believe in having a bunch of best friends you can count on one hand with whom you can do anything and be completely yourself--the good, the bad, and the ugly.  Everyone else you can take or leave.  As my sister said this weekend, "I'm too old to try to make friends and get people to like me."
I believe in saving room for dessert.
I believe in chocolate, any time of the day.
I believe in love.  Love that knows no definition or formula.  That there are as many kinds of love as there are hearts.
I believe in unstructured, watch-off-the-wrist moments planned into every day (or at least every weekend).
I believe in sleeping in.
I believe that record players make music sound better.
I believe that animals make the best companions.
I believe that nothing soothes the soul like hot tea and a good book.
I believe in telling someone you love them, the moment you know it.
I believe in living your life the way you want to live it.
I believe that adults need nap-time, snack-time, and should be rewarded with stickers.
I believe that Canada has bred some very talented artists.
I believe that dreams mean . . . something.
I believe that people who love animals are a very special kind of people.  Same goes for those who love children (most of the time!)
I believe that some friendships come and go depending on your season in life.  Even if you fell out, you never stop loving them and keeping the memories alive.
I believe therapy can be: watching your favourite movie for the millionth time (some personal faves include: "Amelie," "Juno," "I'm Not There," "Girl with the Pearl Earring," "The Wedding Singer" or "Never Been Kissed") lying on the grass under a tree, colouring a picture with crayons, Yann Tiersen's piano melodies for "Amelie," music that reminds you of the good times high school (Sloan, Silverchair, Incubus) or first year university (David Gray, Cat Stevens, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Keane), an extra-large cup of your favourite beverage + a good celebrity gossip magazine + an afternoon of nothing, dancing until you're dripping with sweat, a long drive with a killer mixed cd . . .
I believe in treating yourself like your very best friend.

04:21 pm - Biol 202
Can anyone comment on the difficulty/worthwhileness of Biol 202? I'm going into 2nd year Life Sciences and I am considering taking it as an extra credit (5.5 credits total) in the winter term. I wouldn't be taking Biol 201, but it's not listed as a prerequisite. How much harder will the course be without it?

11:56 pm - BCHM 310 and 315/316
Has anyone here taken BCHM 310: Physical Biochemistry or BCHM 315: Proteins and Enzymes / BCHM 316: Metabolism?

If so, what was the course like in terms of difficulty, workload, exams, etc? Also, is it impossible for non-LISC/BCHM students to get in? I'm going into third year of biology and noticed the prereqs only were mentioned for BCHM and LISC students. Also, if you have the class averages/grade distributions, that'd be great too.

Thanks for your help!
