Plantation, FL - Monday morning coming down... Sleep don’t pacify us until Daybreak sky lights up the grid we live in Dizzy when we talk so fast Fields of numbers streaming past
May is a purgatory month for me this time around. Peru happens in June, and July will be a blur before the inevitability of school in August sets in. I have a nontrivial-sized to-do to chisel away at, but none of it really requires me to be present or awake during the majority of business hours. As such, I'm usually awake until 5am, fucking around or otherwise finding innovative ways to hide from the world. It makes me sad to realize that this is the last True Downtime I'll likely have until medical school is a distant memory. I appreciate the downtime, I just wish I had better things to do with it than sit on my ass in Greater Suburbistan. I'm attempting to fill this void with geeky projects. Last night, I got inspired and set up Virtualbox on my linux laptop (thinkpad x61 tablet), and installed Vista as a VM. Paradoxically (and thankfully) enough, this is the smoothest I've ever seen Vista run. I'll be needing this setup for school, so this wasn't a purely masturbatory exercise. Not having a job, local community, or function in society, even temporarily, is rather fucking with my head. I'm doing my best to mediate this without succumbing to South Florida Consumer Culture, instead trying to focus on more positive things like a kickass adventure in Peru and throwing myself into a challenge like school. Also, trying to get my body dialed in and tuned up, and taking care of nagging things like renter's insurance and writing down stories of adventures past, and plans for future ones. Apparently downtime is just as toxic to me as overcommitment, but with different mechanisms of action. This is worth noting for the future. Multiple videos in one post I have noticed that the code patch that allows a user to post more than one video in a post doesn't seem to have been ported to the open-source code.
Does anyone have a code patch for that and/or know what routine handles it? Thanks. |

Adding comments via a client with XML-RPC? Hi! I'm writing a LiveJournal client using the XML-RPC interface. What I can't seem to find in the documentation (and it may not exist) is a way to use XML-RPC to add comments to Friends entries, or even the authenticated user's own journal. The latter is actually more interesting to me -- to be able to reply to comments in your own journal. Is that possible? Am I missing something? The only other way I could see to do this would be to basically do a POST request to talkpost_do.bml, but that seems clumsy. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. Current Mood: chipper |

Puppy School Reccomendations, Please. This week, I will most likely be getting a mini Dachsund. I have an indoor cat who is almost 7 years old and has lived with only one dog, a hyper pomeranian. Luckily, that was for only a couple of months but she was not happy.
Since this dog will be a member of our house, I would like to make the transition as easy as possible. I am wanting to find a good obidience school for the puppy.
I live in Saint Johns but would be able to drive for puppy school.....Reccomendations?
Also, any suggestions for making this easier on my kitty? I don't want her to feel like we are replacing her or don't love her anymore. |

No, seriously guys. My ex has given me 24 hours before he throws my cat outside, and the humane society has a 4 week waiting list. Can anyone house my sweet little siamese male, or know someone who can, or at least know an inexpensive cat boarder? I loooove my cat, but I have nowhere for him to go. Email me, please. Free basketball backboard hoop Any local Austinites interested in an old basketball backboard hoop with chain net? You'll just need to install some kind of permanent vertical post in your ground someplace, and then you can mount this backboard to it.
Cowhouse came with one installed in the front driveway, but I have no use for it so I took it down.
I'll probably post this on Craigslist in a few days if no one's interested, but I wanted to give the people who know me a chance to claim it first. |

Taking Stock Ahhh, a bit of quiet time at the end of the weekend. Just the thing.
Saturday was my last welding class. I finished my Zirconian Officer's War Helmet and I'll be posting a picture soon. It's very shiny and kind of dangerous. I ripped my shirt on it during final assembly, and it almost poked me in the neck as well. And then Susan almost cut herself on it when I brought it home.
Susan and I hit IKEA that evening, looking for pillows for the radio lounge couches. On our way out the door she spotted just the thing -- a futon split into two unequal parts, one exactly the size of the seat and the other exactly the size of the back. Score!
Sunday we did a test assembly of our new shade structure. Not ideal for quick assembly and take down, but it'll do. And all of the roof seams are heat sealed so it doesn't need any waterproofing. We also repaired the tent fly that was punctured at Flipside last year and folded up a heap of bandanas for tie-dying.
And now, bed. |

Go Fish! So, the wife and I picked up some of my old fishing gear this weekend with dreams of drowning some worms this year. Just finished restringing the lines and inventorying the tackle box...
Anyone on DP willing to give me some suggestions on where to go? She's used to fishing off the shore, and i'm used to docks or boats. So, if it's got a dock that'd be a bonus in my book. Have light weight gear, so we're just looking for trout and bass for the most part (though we've had plenty of fun C&R'ing panfish...) |

Portland Health Insurance for Small Businesses I am a freelance artist/independent contractor in Portland who is currently uninsured. I had insurance through the Freelancers Union a few years ago in NYC. Does anyone know of an affiliation for artists/small business owners that I could obtain health insurance through here? I don't want a $1000 deductible, or a $400/month premium. I am looking for group insurance rates, not individual. HMO or PPO is fine. Any leads? |

hailstorm I've been home sick with a cold all weekend. Yesterday morning it was bright and sunny and I was grumbling about how it always seems to be nice weather outside when I'm feeling under the weather inside. A friend who was out for a walk stopped by for a cup of tea. Just minutes after she left, I heard some raindrops on the roof. It quickly got stronger, and suddenly exploded into a full-blown downpour mixed with pea-sized hail. Amy jumped in the car to go find our friend (who we knew didn't have a hat or umbrella with her) and gave her a ride the rest of the way home.
Later on I looked back at my temperature logger for the day:
That's a sudden drop from about 14°C (57°F) to 8°C (46°F) in a matter of minutes. The surprising thing was how quickly the temperature recovered after the storm cloud passed over. If you remove the section from 12pm to 2pm, it's as though the storm never happened! |

registering pets.... So i am a bit confused about registering pets in Oregon. I moved here from out of state with an unregistered cat. He is indoors only, healthy and well taken care of but never been registered anywhere except with my landlord. After moving here i adopted a kitten from Multnomah county shelter who was chipped and registered. I just got a card from the county to renew his license. The question being: do i have to, and/or why should I? Very short on cash right now, and kitten is also indoor only. Why pay to renew a pet license? Do i need to? Is there a law, or are they just trying to get more money out of me? It doesn't cost much, but i'd rather put the money towards updating rabies vaccinations! |

Sunday. Date: 05/11/2008 Time: 2:58pm Duration: 0:30:07 Location: Quarry Lake
Sport: Swimming Workout: 30min recovery swim Distance: 1640 yds
Weather: Nice, around 77, sunny, windy People: Matt
Comments: We joined Pure Austin a couple weeks ago, but hadn't actually been yet. We really liked Body Business, but a large part of the reason we belonged to a gym is to swim, and BB's pool wasn't really fantastic. It was only 50ft, and it was often completely inaccessible because of classes in the pool. Pure Austin has both a lap pool and access to Quarry Lake, so we decided to give it a try.
Today was our first swim out there, and it was fantastic. A little windy, but the water, while incredibly murky, seemed very clean and didn't taste funny, and it wasn't too cold, but also wasn't bathwater. We didn't wear wetsuits, but we could have comfortably. They have buoys laid out such that you can swim a circuit around the lake, and it's 750m (we did that twice). You can also swim from the dock out directly to the buoys to get 77m, 125m or 230m.
We may try going there instead of BS some Tuesdays, except we have no idea what they have for lights out there that early. |

travel advice?? I've got myself a bit of a problem... I am flying up to Portland on Monday, May 19th and staying until Saturday, May 24th. I'm coming from San Francisco(if that matters). My problem is that my friend who has recently moved up there has proved to be one of the worst hosts ever.... so I'm pretty much going to be by myself the entire time. I have never been to Portland so I have no idea what I'm in for. My friend actually lives in Vancouver, WA and he says it's just a hop, skip and jump away from Portland. So here are my questions: 1. How useful is the public transportation? Will it be easy to get from Vancouver to Portland? From the airport to Vancouver? 2. Is there any kind of public transportation to get me to Seattle? Canada? 3. Please suggest things to do and see. I enjoy art museums, really good coffee, and bargain shopping.... also any really good restaurants to check out? Thanks for your help!! Why your internet experience is slow http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2008/05/why_your_internet_experience_i.html Here is a random-ish URL from Salon.com, a not too unusual online magazine: http://www.salon.com/tech/col/smith/2008/05/09/askthepilot276/.
This HTML page contains the first chunk of a piece of journalism by Patrick Smith; the actual body copy runs to approximately 950 words of text. The average word in English is 5.5 characters long; add 1 character for punctuation or whitespace and we would reasonably expect this file to be on the close order of 6.5Kb in size.
(Patrick, if you're reading this, I am not picking on you; I just decided to do some digging when I got annoyed by how long my browser was taking to load your words.)
In actual fact, the web page my browser was downloading turned out to be 68.4Kb in size. The bulk of the extra content consists of HTML tags and links. It's difficult to say how much cruft there is — much of it is Javascript, and I used a non-Javascript web browser for some of this analysis — but a naive dump of the content reveals 128 URLs.
So, we now have an order of magnitude bloat, courtesy of the salon.com content management system adding in links and other cruft. But that's just the text, and as we all know, no web page is complete without an animated GIF image. So how big is this article, really?
I stared at it for some time while it loaded over a 10mbps cable modem connection. Then I switched off my browser anti-advertising plugins (AbBlock and NoScript), hit "reload", and then saved the web page. Inline in the page are: 4 JPEG images, 4 Shockwave FLASH animations, 4 PNG images, 8 GIF images (of which no less than five are single-pixel web bugs), 4 HTML sub-documents, 6 CSS (style sheet) files, 22 separate Javascript files ... and a bunch of other crap.
The grand total of extras comes to 860Kb by dry weight, meaning that in order to read 950 words by Patrick Smith my cable modem had to pull in 948Kb, of which 942Kb was in no way related to the stuff I wanted to actually read.
With AdBlock and Noscript switched back on, the cruft dropped off considerably, but not completely — the core HTML file squished down to 52Kb (after a bunch of Javascript extensions failed to load) and the hairball of advertising cruft dropped from 62 to 41 included files, for a grand total of 372Kb of crap (from 840Kb). Finally, I updated my /etc/hosts file to include this blacklist of advertising sites, redirecting all requests for objects hosted on them into the bit bucket: the final download came to 40Kb of HTML in the main file and 208Kb of unwanted crap.
Let me put this in perspective:
This is a novel in HTML, with three small image files (totaling about 10Kb). "Accelerando" runs to 145,000 words; it fits in about 400 pages, typeset as a book, using very small print. It is 949Kb in size, or about 10Kb larger than a Salon.com feature containing 950-odd words.
Here's another novel, available for download in HTML. "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom" runs to 328Kb in HTML; it's about 180 pages in book form, and it's still 40Kb smaller than the hairball you get from Salon.com after you switch AdBlock and NoScript on.
If content is king, why is there so little of it on the web? And why are content providers like Salon always whining about their huge bandwidth costs, given that 99% of what they ship — and that is an exact measurement, not hyperbole — is spam?
(Note: these are rhetorical questions. Despite the burning certainty that someone on the internet is wrong, you don't need to try and explain how the advertising industry works to me. Really and truly. I'm just taking my sense of indignation for a Sunday walk.)

Smoker Manners? So. Being a non-smoker, and frankly having little-to-no patience for people forcing me to smoke around them when they light up, I've been wondering if maybe manners and rules of ettiquette for smokers are completely different from non-smokers. A situation: I recently moved out of a downstairs condo where the upstairs neighbors chain-smoked. Badly enough that in the summer I simply couldn't open the windows because our kitchen and living room would fill with cigarette smoke and everything would smell like my husband and I smoke ourselves. I ignored that, because, well, while I didn't necessarily have a right to breathe fresh air, they certainly had a right to smoke where they wanted, right? Didn't say anything, just quietly closed the sliding glass door and the windows. Dealt with it. And then my husband and I would go out on our patio later and find cigarette butts everywhere. And ash. Like, they were out on their deck, and instead of using a coffee can or ashtray or even garbage, they were flicking ashes down on our patio (which was OURS, not common) and then dropping the butts. So, we spent 3.5 years of picking up *their* cigarette butts and sweeping *their* ashes off *our* patio (which, frankly, I thought was beyond gross). I thought that was completely unacceptable, but, then in those years, I noticed more and more people just flicking cigarette butts whereever they felt like it - in someone's yard as they're passing along on a walk, in a park, in a parking lot, along the sidewalks, in front of businesses, on the streets, etc. How, dear DamnedPortlanders, is this considered even remotely civil and acceptable? I'm at a loss. I don't flick my chewed gum at other people's yards or patios (I find garbages, or carry the gum in a piece of paper until a garbage comes along). I don't toss food wrappers on the ground as I walk. Is this behavior born out of some complete disrespect for people around, or is simply a matter of not thinking about people it may be affecting?
