The story they tell most is that I was found on the top of Spruce Mountain by Coyote who brought me to the People with my blanket made of rainbows and clouds, strapped to my cradleboard with sunbeams and lightning. This is probably true, but I've been a baby so many times it's difficult to say just when it was true.
Another story is that I created the people from the cornmeal dust on my breasts left from grinding the corn, this also is true, and also it's true that the women of the tribes made from the dust of my nipples are famous for theirs. Just ask them, they'll tell you.
Yet another story tells of how one of the times when I was young, I bedded, and married the Sun and we had a beautiful pair of twin sons, Sunrise and Sunset, and that they rid the world of monsters, this story is true as well, though I did allow four of their foes to live, Age, Famine, Winter and Poverty, or so they say, perhaps these are new monsters that sprung up from the ruin of their predecessors, no one alive now knows for sure, not even myself.
They call me Changing Woman, because I am a woman who changes, like all women do, but I can change on a whim, from a woman, to a child, to an elder and back again whenever I like.
Others call me Turquoise woman because I live in the Turquoise Place between land and sky.
Some call me Shell Woman because of the white shell cornmeal I dusted off my breasts to make the tribes.
Still others call me Painted Woman because I am painted with the seasons and change as they do.
So, you see, all stories are true, and I was old enough to watch the People's other legends and other gods be born, just the same as I was an infant when Coyote found me and brought me to them. Time was different back then, it didn't move the same as it does now, though I may be the only one who remembers...
Changing Woman in all her incarnations is a part of Native American folklore, and is, as far as I know, public domain. She appears here solely for the purpose of role-playing in , from which no profit whatsoever is being made.
