VM fic-- Drunk

Drunk

It was weird sleeping alone.

Most nights Lilly would climb into his bed as the sun was coming up, buzzing with alcohol and energy, whispering into his ear, lips grazing his earlobe as she told him of her evening, laughing lightly and pressing her cold hands against his warm skin, making him squirm.

Logan was different, he’d slip into bed silently, his back to Duncan, trying to act like he wasn’t there, trying to disappear. It wasn’t until Duncan rolled over and looked into his eyes and Logan would snuggle closer, all tangled limbs and a hiss of breath from the welts on his back. He only slept with Duncan after his dad beat him and Duncan hated himself a little for being grateful to Aaron Echolls for that. For being the catalyst that allowed the barriers that were normally between them to dissolve for a couple hours so Duncan could hold his best friend and watch him sleep.

That was all before, of course. Before Lilly died and Logan stopped coming over altogether and Duncan couldn’t look at him without thinking of his father on Lilly. He couldn’t be around him without feeling his stomach twist into a million knots and vaguely queasy and hung over.

And maybe he was. Maybe he was drunk on Logan all those years and just now he was sobering up to reality.

Either way, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d gotten a good night’s sleep and tequila from his father’s liquor cabinet never served to intoxicate and lull him the way Logan did.

It was weird sleeping alone.
