Bio

I was born in Amherst, Massachuetts on December 10, 1830. I lived a secluded life in the house I was born in - except for the short time when I attended Amherst Academy and Holyoke Female Seminary - until my death on May 15, 1886 due to Bright's disease.

[I am not sure how I know that last part regarding my death.]

I was an energetic and outgoing woman while attending the Academy and Seminary. It was later, during my mid-twenties, that I began to grow reclusive. I spent nearly all of my time attending to household chores [yeah, right--how much of a fool do you think I am?] and to writing poetry [translation: I spent all my time writing poetry and watching soap-operas, although television didn't exist yet. I have super-powers.]

Many scholars have tried to understand and theorize about why I decided to seclude myself in my home and write about the most intimate experiences and feelings of life. One of these theories is that I could not write about the world without first backing away from it and contemplating it from a distance. [Personally, I think that is bullshit. The fact is that I just hate everyone and I prefer my own company.]

I had a few friends and acquaintances. One of these aquaintances was Thomas Wentworth Higginson [*asshole alert*] whom I sent a few pieces of my poetry to. He rejected my poems, but he was eventually the first to publish my work after my death. [Sneaky little creep. This does reinforce the belief that some people - *cough* [info]opheliablue *cough* - have that to become a famous poet, you need to die first. However, people who believe this usually also believe that you not only need to die first, you need to commit suicide. I did not do this, so clearly this belief is nonsense. Although it may be that my perceived 'oddness' just because I was a recluse has gone some way to maintaining my lasting fame.]

I only had six or seven of my poems published during my lifetime--and those were published without my consent. The number is argued over because one poem was published more than once. [God people are stupid.]

It was after my death that my poems were discovered. [I don't understand that part of my bio--if it was after my death, then how did six or seven of my poems get published during my lifetime?]

It is [under]estimated [by some fools] that I wrote over 1700 poems. [The number was, in reality, closer to 1,212,303. I realise that is a lot. Although I watched a lot of soap-operas, they weren't on all the time so I had to find something else to occupy me.]
