how many of you are over here with me?
Interesting choice. Last night, I couldn't help but feel so positive. This is definitely a twist.

I don't understand the crowd. They cheer because McCain says her parents raised their kids to play sports. They cheer about her anniversary. A world champion snow-machine racer? Eh. Just ... oh man.

For some reason, McCain also just makes me sad. Sad for him. I don't know why.

the u in masturbate
At school, my friend Rachel used to spend most of her time scrawling shit-talk about people across her exercise books. I didn't have a problem with the shit-talk -- most of 'em deserved it -- but I did object to the fact that she endlessly wrote about hores.

What's prompted this delightful trip down memory lane? As I was walking home today, I saw some new graffiti. It read: You should masterbate more.

Good sentiment; poor spelling. *shakes head*

Study anxiety
So what's up with my latest angsty freakout?

Well, I'm having problems with my Foundation Programming in C course. I started out really well, but now? not so much. I admit I thought I could just read the textbook, try the exercises, and do the assignments = thus, pass the course no problem. Admittedly, the lecturer did say we have to spend a good 60 hours on the course each week.

This course reminds me of how I felt with math. With other courses, I read the material, catch on to what they want, and whine if they want me to do an essay etc.

I went to see the lecturer today and he'd like me to go back over the past two modules because I'm not understanding the basic theory. Is it because I haven't devoted enough time to it? Is it because I'm thinking of this as math, so my maths anxiety is coming out to play? Or is it because I truly will never understand programming?

What makes this worse is that I've looked at the specs for my course and so many of my modules hinge on me getting this course right. It's the lead in to everything else. Sure, I could do Creative Media instead of Multimedia, but it's way too camera-based, not computer-based. And tonight I skipped further ahead and looked at a computing masters degree and thought, "Wow, combine that with multimedia and my job prospects would be awesome." I could go anywhere with both courses under my belt.

But it all hinges on this one course. What is your advice, guys? Am I just not confident enough in my ability? (I think so.)

The lecturer also recommended I head to Student Services and put in my medical certificate for my depression and anxiety disorder. I have been meaning to do it because they can give me extra guidance, help, and time, but you know how I put things off. I told my lecturer I'm also thinking of the big two-hour exam at the end of the semester and I'm fretting like crazy.

Advice, please, flist. Have you been in this situation?

I need to get my head into the game.

No. Words.
Damn. I'm always the last to know...

David Duchovny in Rehab.

I'm shocked... Just... shell shocked. And confused. And feeling for his family. It must be such a hard time. Not only for Tea, but for the kids too.

I know you can't perform an addictive behavior and pretend it won't come into your personal life, but damn, I'm still a bit disappointed. I don't know... I just don't feel in the mood to see the new season of Cali right now :(

And wth people, this is not a matter for laughing. People deal with shock in different ways, but please. Man, what upsets me the most is that he was having such a great year so far... and I know this is going to taint his career, quite possibly for a long time (not in my eyes, but... *sighs*) It IS very brave and admirable to come out and say something like that, rather than lie or be dodgy about it, but it's still going to have repercussions.

David, I know you won't read this, but I wish you and your family the best of luck.

Sex differences seen in response to common antidepressant
(University of Michigan Health System) Women with depression may be much more likely than men to get relief from a commonly used, inexpensive antidepressant drug, a new national study finds. But many members of both sexes may find that it helps ease their depression symptoms. The persistence of a gender difference in response to the drug -- even after the researchers accounted for many complicating factors -- suggests that there's a real biological difference in the way the medication affects women.

GuysLitWire: As Simple as Snow by Gregory Galloway
The following was cross-posted at the GuysLitWire blog.

As Simple as Snow is a complex, haunting mystery written by Gregory Galloway. Since its publication in 2005, I have recommended it to a countless number of friends, customers, and literary groups. I've mentioned it many times here at the Bildungsroman blog, included it in one round of Wicked Cool Overlooked Books, and made it a readergirlz recommended read.

I wanted to bring this book to your attention again now, especially if you have read or plan to read Paper Towns by John Green. Paper Towns won't be available in bookstores until October, but ARCs are already making the rounds. Having enjoyed both books, I'm anxious to discuss them with other readers. The writing styles differ, as do the characters, but there are obvious parallels between the two.

Let's drift back into the Snow now. What is it about this story that keeps me talking about it three years after its release? Perhaps it is the way it ends. Perhaps it is the way it begins. (See below for the trailer, in which you can hear the opening pages.) Perhaps it's Anna herself, the charismatic, creative girl at the heart of the story, whose introduction is shocking and memorable and whose disappearance shortly thereafter may be described in the same way. Perhaps it is the codes, the clues, or the numbers. It may even be the mix tapes. All of these things factor into my adoration of this book, which further benefits from great plotting and pacing. Galloway infuses tension in every line and every step.

I have always enjoyed well-written stories about those who are changed by the presence of others - those unknowing, almost unwilling protagonists who tell readers about a person they knew, be it someone they loved, lost, or wish had (or hadn't) known. Consider Nick in The Great Gatsby, one of my all-time favorite books.(1) Thanks to Galloway's intriguing writing, As Simple as Snow has a narrator who will draw you in, just as Anna drew him in, but his name is unknown. You will get to know him quickly, and you will grow to care about him, Anna, and other residents of their town.

The video trailer utilizes absolutely perfect imagery as the narrator reads the opening pages of the book. Watch it at the website or YouTube and I'll bet you want to run out and get the book immediately -- as you should.

Something else to note: Though the main characters are teenagers, this book is not categorized as teen fiction. It is typically shelved in the mystery section of bookstores, though those without genre breakouts may place it in general fiction/literature. Has this helped or hurt the book's sales or its reach? I do not know its sales figures, but I do think it could have been cross-marketed and published in YA as well. I have no idea how many people have read it, but I think that more people should. If you read this post, I certainly hope that you will give it a try.

...and after you read As Simple as Snow, please read Paper Towns, and then we'll talk.

I don't want to give too much of the book away here. For more, please read my full review of As Simple as Snow.

(1) I'd love to revisit The Great Gatsby with other readers. I'm planning to discuss it in my GuysLitWire post for September. If you're interested, please click here and leave a comment.

Playing House - Michael/Sara (1/1)
Title: Playing House (1/1)
Fandom: Prison Break
Characters: Michael Scofield, Sara Tancredi, Lincoln Burrows, Fernando Sucre
Pairing: Michael/Sara
Length: 1,085 words
Rating: R
Summary: Sanctuary can be found in the most unlikely of places. Spoilers for Season Four.
Author's Note: This is probably something I should sleep on, but hey, that would be the sensible thing to do, lol! Inspired by a throwaway remark made during this behind-the-scenes video, it contains logistical spoilers for Season Four and wild (but entirely predictable) speculation from me. No beta, so please feel free to point out all my typos. *g*
