life is a trip. [11 Oct 2008|11:18am]

Things are going a lot better.

I've been having anxiety attacks but I haven't had one in a while. It's encouraging.

Kenny is gone to New Jersey and I miss him like whoah. He makes me smile. I can't wait until he gets back.

Lots of stuff. I have much going on in my head.

He makes everything alright.

Being more of a creative writer, I LOATHE grammar. Which is correct?

"My brother and I enjoy chess, even though he is a better player than me," or "My brother and I enjoy chess, even though he is a better player than I."

If you recall, I purchased Suikoden II on eBay a short while ago, and have since been playing it. I'm about 9 hours in so far and am enjoying it immensely.

I'll try to keep this relatively spoiler-free so CERTAIN PEOPLE won't whine :D )

Real life BS: mum has 2 appointments today. Nano approaches. I MADE CAKES. This is all really exciting stuff.

I know I've thought this more than once - probably said so more than once, too....

I think I'm actually finally over him.
(about damn time, too)

Somthing happened the other night at a party that gave me closure and pissed me off enough that I think I'm finally done with him. Can't tell for sure just yet, but I think it may actually be over.

Lets hope, anyways.

Writer's Block: The Beatles [09 Oct 2008|12:42pm]

djfaulk05

In their heyday, The Beatles were the center of the pop universe. Many groups have been hailed as the next Beatles, but does pop music even have a center anymore? Who represents the core of pop music to you?

What a retarded question. Uh, Michael Jackson a.k.a. "King of Pop?"
He practically of respresents everything having to do with "pop." Nevertheless, if we are talking about breakthrough artists in 2008, well I would have to say Justin Timberlake, or Gwen Stefani.

If by pop, you mean extremely versatile, with exploration of all types of music from all over the world; using profound lyrics that challenge their listeners to think, while maintaining a repertoire with exquisite musical value....my answer would be pop music doesn't exist, and there certainly isn't a center of it.

Writer's Block: Suikoden Holidays [08 Oct 2008|05:56am]

forever_alone

These days, there's a holiday for everything from punctuation to pie. If you could create your own holiday, what would it be and how would you celebrate?

View other answers

Gay Innuendo Appreciation Day. Celebrate by playing a Suikoden game of your choice.

Punctuation Abuse Day. For, the rest....... of the day you, have to talk!!!! Like......this????!!!

A Mistranslation Awarness Day. I belive this one speak for it's self.

True Rune Day of Remembrance. Mass candlelight vigil held during which the Flame Champion's successor lights everyone's candles.

Inept Strategy Recognition Day. Ceremonies hosted by the Godwin family with special guest speaker Caesar Silverberg.

Evil Badass Appreciation Day (combination of Luca Blight and Yuber's birthdays.) There are no celebrations; you are already dead.

I better stop now. But believe me, I could keep going.

MLA citation of an online journal [07 Oct 2008|01:25pm]

[fourlittlesongs]
I'm having trouble figuring out how to cite an online-only journal, specifically First Monday. It's a peer reviewed journal, indexed on my university's website, so I'm thinking I should cite it like any other journal. Except that there are no page numbers, and I don't know where I would put the date of access. Citing it like a website doesn't seem correct either, though. Any thoughts?

Life kinda sucks lately.

Boys that I should've been over a long time ago, but who I'm not, suck.

Being busy ALL the time sucks.

And being broke when I have no reason to be broke sucks.

Working all the time with people who don't know what they're doing, sucks, too.

School sucks - especially classes that I can't seem to do good in..
(and ones that I don't think I can afford to drop)

And, not being able to focus on school because I'm so busy and stressed and depressed sucks most.

mla quote citation [05 Oct 2008|02:00pm]

english_majors

[agraciado]
I'm having some trouble with how to properly cite a quotation and can't find a clear answer in the MLA Handbook or any resources online.  I'm doing a paper on Middlemarch and I found this enhanced version of the text.  The top part is the narrative as written by Eliot and the bottom part has footnotes written by Bert Hornback.   In an epigraph, Eliot has a French poem untranslated.  In the footnotes, Hornback has the poem translated into English.  In my paper I'm quoting the English translation of the poem.  I'm thinking that my citation should be (Hornback 147) since I'm quoting the footnote instead of the actual narrative but I'm not 100% sure.

Alternatively, I tried to find a source online which had both the French and translated English versions of the poem so I could just cite that, but the only hit I got was for Google Answers.

Relocating to UT Austin [05 Oct 2008|12:52am]

[jenw118]
[ mood | anxious ]

I joined this community because I'm relocating to Austin. I already live here, but am staying with a friend on a temporary basis. She needs some help getting errands done and things like that because she is having some severe back pain, possibly pinched nerves.

I'm 27 and on a break from going to school in order to help my friend, but the drama has recently gotten too much for me to handle. I love Austin, and the complete last resort is for me to go back and live with my parents in a very rural area where I cannot take care of my immediate needs without depending on them.

I have a few questions though, and I hope no one minds me posting them.

1.) I am disabled and on SSI which means a very limited income. I am also trying to go to school (just applied to UT, and if not accepted there as a transfer student, will try finishing up at ACC). Anyway, things with my friend aren't exactly working out, and I am very soon needing another place to live.

I love Austin and Capital Metro system rocks hardcore compared to the bus system in Houston where I used to live (attended u of h there until this came up with my friend and I bit the billet to go to UTA if accepted and help her out . . . .)

Realistically, I know I can't pay all that much. I simply want a roommate who does not have delinquent children and who is also going to school and respects my privacy and my need for quiet study time. I really don't want to go back to live with my parents.

I also don't want to get back on campus housing if I can help it. What I am willing to do is to get into one of the apartment complexes for college students. I guess mostly, I'm just asking for ideas from everyone. I don't want to give up my dream city/school just because living with my best friend is not working out like I thought it would.

PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people
mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard.

This is my worst fear, that my husband will sleep with my twin sister if we were to ever divorce. This fear alone will ensure we never divorce.

A PostSecret Community teen recently shared in a forum she couldn't share her secrets as her Mom read her diary and knew her id on PSC. This reminded me how my mother read my diary and reminded me of a secret I had.

Since I had no outlet for expressing my anger, I would write my thoughts in acronyms. I knew exactly what I was saying, but no one else ever would. It was my secret way to let the anger out.

The interesting aspect of this is I would often go back to the writings and what I previously said would now be a mystery even to me. It was my secret yet I couldn't decipher it.

I KNEW IT!

This year a UK and Korean edition of the PostSecret book came out and there are official versions of the website in French, German, Spanish and Korean. This week on Frank's PostSecret Blog on MySpace I interview Brian Cotlove who runs PostSecretFrance.

Hi Brian, can you explain how you started PostSecretFrance?

Being a longtime fan of PostSecret, I always found the foreign language secrets to be the most interesting and appealing to me. I think it's incredible how secrets can cross cultural and language barriers with ease. So I combined my love of the French language and culture with my love of PostSecret, made this video in French and PostSecretFrance was born.

Can you share a postcard with us that has a personal meaning for you and explain why it is special to you?

My favorite secret that I have gotten so far is the simplest one. It's scrawled on a Post-It note and says, "I'm mailing this card because I have the feeling that I'm going to meet the person who will change my life on the way to the post office."

I'm actually kind of jealous of this person because they seem so unfailingly positive and confident. Yet at the same time this secret constantly reminds me how I am able to do just what this person did. I'm amazed every time I read it at how just a little Post-It note can make me feel.

What is a secret about yourself you have never shared before?

(Read the rest of this interview at Frank's PostSecret Blog on MySpace.)

The Today Show will be filming the Tuesday PostSecret Event at the University of Virginia (sold-out). Another PostSecret Event this week will be held at Vanderbilt University (sold-out).
