I finally managed to sell my old skis and boots... at least I won't have to store them (or just throw them away). I really got my use out of them, and considering the cost of rentals they paid for themselves several times over last season -- I'm happy to see them go to someone who will put them to good use, and of course getting a bit of money for the equipment doesn't hurt, either.

| November is shaping up to be busy... |
[21 Oct 2008|07:30pm] |
It looks like a busy couple of months leading up to the holidays, and I have some motivation to get things "out of the way" since December will be filled with activity!
November --car service --7 days in San Jose for training on our new storage system --mum's birthday --website contract to wrap up
December --trip to Whistler! --work Christmas party --local ski hills open (woo!) --Christmas (duh!)
I am feeling quite nervous about the fact I have no idea of what to get people for Christmas, and really with my trip to the US November is only three weeks long. I would like to not be thinking about Christmas during our trip to Whistler, so I better get my act in gear well before then.
Must discuss Convergence 15 with _gryffinnoir_...

One of my projects this year at work is to update our external mail relay (partly to allow us to phase out our use of Electric Mail), and of course the quality of SPAM filtering is at the top of the priority list.
There aren't many open-source options out there, Spamassassin being the most commonly used. Dspam provides some nice features (such as quarantine), but from what I have read is about the same as Spamassassin in terms of effectiveness... it is also notoriously difficult to get running.
Enter Assp... a product I had heard of some time ago but never really investigated. Some research suggested that it is more effective than Spamassassin, and has some of the features of Dspam (automatic whitelisting based on outbound mail, automatic Bayesian filter training based on samples collected by the daemon). As for testing... what better way to go about it than install it on my own mailserver?
The result: SPAM is gone. Seriously. I have not received a single piece of SPAM since I installed Assp, and that's without the Bayesian filtering (it's still collecting samples and not yet fully trained). Installation is stupidly easy, and the effectiveness is incredibly impressive. False positives seem to be low so far, but of course no filtering is perfect... in the long run, however, I think this is an excellent solution.

I've been doing some research into online/automatic web page translation lately, and came across a rather amusing item today:

Sometimes, online translation is not your friend.

It looks like NOLA is already flooding, and Gustav is still 70 miles off the coast. Last night I found a bunch of live webcams, but this morning most are out -- presumably due to power loss.

For quite some time my website has been in need of some updating... many features were incomplete, and the longer I left it the more insurmountable a task it became.
I finally got around to doing something about it.
Over the past week I have done a tremendous amount of work, and have had a huge amount of fun doing it. From the change logs:
August 26, 2008: Some minor banner code updates, and a few layout tweaks.
August 24, 2008: Minor code changes to some of the site blocks, and a few CSS tweaks as well. The "read more" links for articles have been made more prominent. An issue with the outgoing automated email system was discovered and corrected -- this unfortunately prevented pending membership requests from being seen and processed... all legitimate accounts have now been activated (sorry for the delay!)
August 23, 2008: The Links section has been rewritten, and content has been split up into broad categories. 'About this site' has been re-designed and renamed to 'about/contact'.
August 22, 2008: A major change to the site layout engine was completed -- the site is now running on a pure PHP back-end. Page load times should be improved, and the new structure will make future page layout changes easier.
August 20, 2008: Changes to the image galleries were completed -- this includes the addition of forward/back buttons with thumbnail preview.
August 18, 2008: New banner modules have been added, as well as Google AdSense. A revision to the user-submitted links section has begun, although this may take some time to complete.
I can now say that I am pleased with my site... there is more to do, but it is far more polished than it was two weeks ago. The gratifying thing about these updates is that I have already seen renewed interest in the site, and some new submissions have come in... hopefully more follow!

The Absinthe fountain is coming along nicely, and tonight I am prepared to glue the reservoir to the base, which will mark the completion of the project.

Today I picked up the spigots I ordered for my Absinthe fountain project... they are quite nice, although may need a bit of treatment to reduce the shine.
Since I first posted about this project I found a glass reservoir of a better size, and have treated it's lid and base (originally a candle holder) with a pewter finish -- I think it looks far better than the shiny silver. Since I went with the pewter finish on some parts I thought brass spigots might be a nice contrast.

My model construction is going well. I started with the painting on Sunday, and wrapped most of that up last night... I don't want to paint any more until I start seeing some of the parts together.
Tonight I started the construction, which is going quite well. I have the legs assembled (which is where most of the parts are, since they are fully articulated) and the "cockpit" is well underway.
