May. 25th, 2007 @ 01:02 pm Florida Property Tax Cuts.
So, I'm sure homeowners are thrilled about this proposed cut which goes before review on June 12th - 22nd. Here's an article showing you where exactly those property tax cuts directly affect... and this isn't just for Sarasota, this is state-wide... so that means Tampa, St. Pete, Miami, Orlando.. every single county and municipality in the state will deal with the same thing.

Welcome to Florida becoming the next Wild West if this goes through.

Oh, and this doesn't mention how your Fire and EMS personnel would also be hit... which they would be.

There's a good video at the bottom of the article as well. Again, remember this isn't just a Sarasota thing. Also notice how much (little?) people will save on property taxes.

Is that worth it?

May. 12th, 2007 @ 09:19 am National Police Week.

Cranking from the Speakers: "Klendathu Drop" - Starship Troopers Soundtrack
Heads up, folks... National Police Week technically runs from May 12 - May 19.

Here's some brief history:

"In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week. Every year since, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. For more information please visit www.policeweek.org."

Sure, these events take place in DC, but...

"The US Flag may be flown at half staff by Presidential Proclamation, or by the State Governor. By statute, the President is required to issue each year a proclamation requiring goverment buildings to half staff the flag and invite all the people of the U.S. to do so as well, on the following days:

- May 15th, Peace Officer's Memorial Day
- September 11th, Patriot Day
- December 7th, National Pearl Harbor Rememberance Day"

....so, in short, there are 3 dates upon which Presidential Proclamation requires government buildings to fly at half-staff... and May 15th shares some distinction then with the other dates listed.

Take some time out to remember and reflect at home, or while at work, or whilst driving.

We lose, on average, approximately 120+ Law Enforcement Officers yearly, nationwide.

Obviously this doesn't take into account those who are attacked, seriously injured, maimed, et al.

We've lost 63 already this year alone. http://www.odmp.org/year.php if you'd like to see for yourself. 22 of those have been to gunfire; the first, Jan. 6th in Tennessee, occurred while on a traffic stop wherein the Trooper smelled marijuana. The passenger opened fire and killed the Trooper where he stood.

....over marijuana.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hopefully it brings some perspective to what we do, and that the risks are very real.

Watch this. Turn your speakers to a comfortable volume, and prepare to be absolutely amazed.

There's something wrong with you if you don't watch this and get chills.

Apparently this is unedited footage. This man is phenomenal.

For anyone without musical-equipment knowledge, this man is playing -everything- you hear... he's just using loop-effects and pedals to record something, get it looped, the move on to the next piece. It's fucking stunning.

Cranking from the Speakers: Swashbuckle - "Drink Up"
Is right here:

The song of which I speak is "Drink Up", and the lyrics are as follows. Read them and realize how absolutely cool they are.

Yes folks, "Pirate Metal" is getting bigger and bigger. Swashbuckle is a fucking hysterical band. They don't take themselves seriously at all (look at how they dress, for fuck's sake, and the lyrics)... but they make some -brutal- metal.

Tell me if this chorus doesn't just stick in your head the rest of the day.

Lyrics to "Drink Up"

Forever again will we hail
Upon this nautical hell, we sail
Through the moonless nights
Across the seas of death, we'll fight

Slash of the saber sword
Lift the curse and be restored
We're pirates!
We aim to kill!
No prisoners - our code fulfilled

Pass the Ale
Pass the Rum
By nights embrace
our bodies numb

Drink up me matey's YO HO! YO HO!
Drink up me matey's YO HO!

Mighty cannon's roar into the sky
Burning chainshot - our foes reply
The Black One's beard is burning bright
A tour of duty of epic might
For honor
For glory
For lore and sacred story

Feb. 27th, 2007 @ 08:11 am Sewing question....
Current Mood: awake
Cranking from the Speakers: "Chaosweaver" - Scar Symmetry
Okay, to people who sew, here is my scenario:

My driver's seat bolster is ripped to shreds (okay, not really, there's a worn spot). This is common for this type of seat, and, being 17 years old, I can't expect it to -not- be worn.

Down the road, these seats will be replaced, but for now... I'm considering the following "quick" fix:

1. Small piece of foam to fill in the hole in the bolster.

2. Black or grey suede, or some other grey or black material to sew directly to the seat. Cut a pattern so as not to look like a simple square, attach it to the driver's side and passenger side for uniformity.

Is #2 possible without being a major pain in the ass, and with the seat still in the car?

Obviously..... eh.... I don't know anything about sewing nor upholstery.
