I went out to my car this morning and it was surrounded by dead things. There are a lot of cats that run around here, so I thought they were kittens. I was a little freaked out by that.
I was going to follow Bryce to our mechanic's place and he left and I pulled out of my car port and saw there was a live kitten stumbling around in the middle of the port. It's only a couple days old and it's eyes are closed and everything.
So I called Bryce and told him to go to a pet store and get some kitten milk. He said the pet stores wouldn't be open yet, but he would go to the grocery store. I found a bowl to put the little guy in and surrounded him with towels and looked online and saw that I'd also need a heating pad. I called Bryce to tell him we needed a heating pad, and he told me to have his brother watch the kitten while we take the car in and the pet stores should be open be the time we're done. I couldn't wake his brother, so I took the kitten with me.
I showed it to Bryce when he returned home and noticed the kitten's ears were round. But I wasn't going to let whatever it was die either way. I showed it to my mechanic, who said it was a rat. I said it was too big to be a ritten, so he decided it was a possum. I agreed that sounded like a good guess. Bryce wondered what we'd do with a possum, but we still couldn't just let it die, so we went on to the pet store. I figured we could care for it until we could find some wildlife rescue to take it, just like if it was a kitten we would care for it for a couple months and give it to the Humane Society.
So we got the cat milk (I figured that would work for whatever it was), but couldn't find a heating pad. But we did notice they had an on sight vet. We asked the vet for help deciding what it was, and he said it's a possum and offered to take care of it for us. We decided that was best, with our schedules and the threat of whatever parasites it might have. I hope they do take care of it, though. We decided on the way there that Edgar Allen Possum would be a good name for him.
