Update Update Important Important [07 Aug 2008|12:04am]
Hey there friends of my LiveJournal.

Do you like reading my excellent music blog? Have you noticed the lack of updates?

Well Blogger has been fucked up, so I had to transfer my URL. My new blog is located here:

http://knowthecitizeninsane.blogspot.com

It's the same great blog with a new (read: slightly changed) URL.

Also, because I love my LJ friends (the 4 of you that do read my blog), I've created a new friend feed that you should add ASAP.

ADD THIS TO YOUR FRIENDS: thecitizenblog

There. Now you're updated. Bottom line is Blogger can suck, but everything's fixed now. Keep commenting!

Au Revoir

P.S. And this is more for me than for you, but I corrected the links below so they lead to my new blog as well.

Blog "Transfer" (Part 2) [29 Feb 2008|06:21pm]
[ mood | complacent ]

Okay, so in my last entry I described how I created a new blog.

Now, because I have a few friends on LJ who I want to keep in the loop, I'd originally considered just re-posting all my entries here. However, I realized that that would be quite time consuming. SO, I found a solution.

From now on, I'll just be feeding my new blog into Livejournal.

If none of that makes sense, or even if it does, add this to your friends list...

thecitizenblog

Now, the actual profile for that account will look retarded, but I promise it will look quite normal on your friends' page.

So there you go, now none of you will miss a beat. Again, just add the user above.

I might re-post this entry again to let everyone know.

Thankyouverymuch. And don't worry. I'll still occasionally post just here as well.

Blog Transfer [28 Feb 2008|12:43am]
[ mood | tired ]

For any and all that still read my LJ, I've created a wholly-new blog that is a lot more focused and a lot more centered on media. I launched it earlier this week.

I’ve got a few weekly features planned, including an updated music playlist of tunes old and new and I wanted to let you guys know.

So if you like me and/or music, do me a favor and check it out.

Feedback is welcome/appreciated.

This link is as follows...

New Media Blog!

Also, I haven't decided if I'll post the same entries on LJ too, after I enter them into my blog. As far as tonight goes, I'm a little too tired, but we'll see.

A quick note: My apologies for the barrage of Music In Review features, I've been a busy writer. Anyways, I've got some ideas from some weekly features that I'll announce/put into practice soon.

Also, it is cold in Kalamazoo. My hair freezes on the way to classes and this week has been academically devastating. That is all.

Music In Review: Vampire Weekend [30 Jan 2008|09:00pm]
[ mood | cold ]

So here's another entry of Music In Review, what I'm hoping becomes a weekly feature for my blog. Like last entry, this one is a review that was published in Kalamazoo College's newspaper, The Index.

I'll admit, I'm a little biased. I've liked these guys for a little while, and after seeing them live and meeting them, I think they're great. Love their record. Love it.

If anyone wants to check out the photos I took when I saw them, check my old entry found here: http://users.livejournal.com/_citizen_insane/16095.html?

Music In Review: Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend
By TJ

The product of indie music blogs and online journalism, the buzz surrounding Vampire Weekend’s self-titled debut has been building for months. Equipped only with a low-fi CD-R demo, the band, led by lead-singer and guitarist Ezra Koenig, gained a great deal of attention when one of their songs appeared on Rolling Stone’s “Best Songs of 2007” feature and they eventually obtained a record deal with XL Recordings. Armed with boat shoes, degrees from Colombia University, and simplistic pop melodies, Vampire Weekend deliver an album that is well worth the hype.

Mixing influences of African music, Paul Simon, and the Police, Vampire Weekend’s self-titled album may not be the most groundbreaking or catchy, but it’s an album that will have you listening to it on repeat for weeks at a time. The music has a very home-grown sound to it. However, it’s easy to hear that there is something deeper going on underneath the clean guitar tones and keyboard accents. “Mansard Roof,” the album’s first song, opens with optimistic pipe-sounding synthesizer, transcends into gentle strings, and then establishes itself with a toe-tapping rhythm and a bright keyboard arpeggio. Many of the album’s songs develop themselves in this way, all while Koenig’s soft, relaxed vocals spin tales of life in Cape Cod, and trying to get laid on your college campus. Again, the home-grown experience works in the band’s favor, as a lot of what Koenig sings is easy to relate to, if not sing-a-long-able. “Is your bed made? Is your sweater on? Do you want to fuck? Like you know I do?” sings Koenig on Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa, behind a polite guitar harmony, a thick bass grove, and African drums, all of which capture the peppy nature of the band’s music.

In a time where it seems that most listeners are looking for the next musical act that challenges the status quo, Vampire Weekend is at home with their warm, indie pop. Even if you think you’ve heard it before, the sounds of the album are inviting, clever, unpretentious, and most of all, refreshing.

Music In Review: Best Albums of '07 [28 Jan 2008|06:34pm]
[ mood | content ]

Hi

So he's my article from a week back that I had published in Kalamazoo College's student paper, The Index.

It's simply a more detailed expansion on what I had to say in an earlier entry, but this was published and I'm proud of the writing so I'm re-printing here.

"Music In Review: Top Five Albums of 2007
By TJ

5. The National – Boxer

Digging deeper into the stark musical landscape pioneered by the band’s 2005 sleeper hit, Alligator, The National’s most recent body of work continues to transcend into minimalist, muted darkness. Lead singer Matt Berninger’s soulful croak tells of mournful American life and his band makes nearly every song an intense slow burn. The album begins with the absolutely crushing “Fake Empire,” but closes with the rainy optimism of “Gospel.” The band’s sorrowful sound strikes for the heart. “You get mistaken for strangers by your own friends/when you pass them at night under the silvery, silvery citibank lights/arm in arm in arm and eyes and eyes glazing under/oh you wouldn’t want an angel watching over/surprise, surprise they wouldn’t wanna watch,” Berninger sings. It’s that biting honesty that makes this album resonate just after one listen.

4. LCD Soundsystem – Sound of Silver

There’s no doubt that James Murphy’s debut album was an amazing dance record. Given that fact, most everyone expected LCD Soundsystem’s sophomore effort to up the ante in terms of beats, rhythm, and pop, but the emotional weight of Murphy’s songwriting was something no one accounted for. It’s clear that maturity has made LCD Soundsystem’s dance music deeper, but it’s still a dance record, and age has made the musician’s electronic sound bolder as well. Songs such as “Get Innocuous!” and “Watch the Tapes,” prove that Murphy can still put out the toe-tappers, but it’s songs like “All of My Friends” and the devastating “Someone Great,” truly showcase Murphy’s growth as a musician; some things do get better with age.

3. Okkervil River – The Stage Names

“It's just a life story/so there's no climax/No more new territory/so pull away the IMAX,” lead singer Will Sheff sings on album opener “Our Life Is Not a Movie or Maybe.” A concept record of sorts that strives to break down the fourth wall of artist and listener, The Stages Names is filled with irony and self-reference. In attempt to partake in the theatrical antics of the stage, Okkervil River often shift between exuberance (“Unless It Kicks”) and melancholy honestly (“Title Track”). What benefits Sheff’s sharp lyrics most is the way they intertwine themselves with the band’s often catchy songs. Sheff’s vocals both highlight and are reinforced by the music of every song; the album is full of perfect song craftsmanship. Not only that, but the transition of “John Allyn Smith Sails” into an emotional cover of “Sloop John B,” is simply an amazing way to close a record.

2. Battles – Mirrored

By track two of Mirrored, it’s clear that Battles is bringing something new to the table. That song, “Atlas,” is a perfect example of the half-human, half-computer hybrid sound of Battles. The mostly instrumental band is able to inject excitement, drama, and humor (human emotion) into barrages of detailed loops, samples, beats, and riffs. What makes Battles so interesting to listen to is trying to discern just how they’re accomplishing the sounds they’re making while being overtaken by the sheer awesomeness of those very sounds. John Stainer’s acute drumming is at the center point; his near machine-like rhythm holds together the myriad arpeggios, note syncopation, and catchy riffs of the three other members of the band. Each songs seems to operate on the same pattern: establish an complex musical sequence, repeat, add an intricate arrangement, repeat, then tear the whole song down, transforming it into an entirely new musical sequence. Not only is the record musically impressive, but it only gets better with more listens. It’s easy to find oneself getting even more excited the second or third time around when you know what pervasive drum beat or guitar pattern is going to uproot the carefully packaged repetition that’s had you hooked for the past two minutes.

1. Radiohead – In Rainbows

Radiohead’s In Rainbows was perhaps the most hyped album of the year, but with the first few seconds of “15 Step,” it’s clear that it delivers. Free from the contract of record labels, Radiohead chose to record and produce their latest album entirely on their own. Better yet, when the album was released in its initial form (via digital download from the band’s website), not only could listeners could name their own price, but for the first time in what seems like a very long time, everyone around the world was given access to the music at the same time. There were no advanced leaks or promotional copies. That is, when downloading of the record began and you listened to it for the first time, so was everyone else; critics, musicians, fans, everyone. It’s then clear that a big part of In Rainbow’s greatness was its experience. However, that experience would be nothing without the music. In fact, the music deserved it. The sound of the record harkens back to Ok Computer-era Radiohead, as the band forgoes the more electronic elements seen on Kid A. Simply put, Radiohead embrace rock. Although it can be somewhat explained as a revisiting of the Ok Computer-era, In Rainbows is hardly a repetition of any of those concepts. Forgoing their oft-mentioned complexity, Radiohead, for the first time in awhile, sound musically user-friendly, though front-man Thom Yorke retains his wicked cynicism. On In Rainbows, Radiohead embrace guitar-driven melody and doing so is wonderfully refreshing."

If you're going to scream, scream with me: moments like this never last... [05 Jan 2008|08:14pm]
[ mood | happy ]

Taking a break from mixing and recording, I present you, my mates, a small handful of splendid pictures from my ridiculously fun winter cruise to the Bahamas. Starring Jeff, Brad, Dave, and Eric.

(and yes, I'm aware of the perhaps inordinate amount of thumbs_up)

Feet

Steak knife?Collapse )

Again, I'll keep things brief here. Anyways, 'twas the best New Year's winter cruise ever.

We all had a really great time. We met some pretty funny people, such as the Caucasian portly girl who practically stalked our group, was constantly just trashed, and would occasionally shout something to the effect of "New Year's 2008! Whoo! Let's get wasted!" Quite ridiculous.

Some of the group ended up sneaking into Atlantis, the super-expensive resort in Nassau, which was hilarious and exhilarating. It was something straight out of Ocean's 11. Okay, maybe not at all, but better than paying the $150.00 individual guest pass.

We spend New Year's Eve counting down on the deck, which was fun. It was the first time I was with a huge group of people for New Year's, which was different. Let's hope I can keep my resolutions...

We did karaoke. "Come Sail Away" by Styx in particular. We got a standing ovation, which pretty much sums up the entire trip for me. Now take a bow.

They turn me
Why should I stay here?
Why should I stay?

I'd be crazy not to follow
Follow where you lead
Your eyes
They turn me

Turn me on to phantoms
I follow to the edge of the earth
And fall off
Everybody leaves
If they get the chance
And this is my chance

I get eaten by the worms
Weird fishes
Get picked over by the worms
Weird fishes

I'll hit the bottom
Hit the bottom and escape
Escape

I'll hit the bottom

Best of Two-Thousand & Seven
Albums & Films

So, I'm back from the Bahamas. I'm having a shitty return, so I'll make these lists simple.

It's now January 5th, and I'm guessing there's not a whole lot of people out there who are aching to read either of these lists (note to self, get these done earlier this year), so I'm going to renege on a few things I said last entry. First off, I'm only listing my favourite film of the year, and it's runner-up. Second, I'm not going to type up any explanations. It seems kind of moot to me, and again, I'm having a rough two days. If anyone has any questions about why I chose what I chose though, I'll be happy to expound.

Best Film of 2007 - No Country for Old Men

Photobucket

I really don't think this one really needs explanation. This movie was visually and thematically amazing. If you haven't seen it yet, get up and go. Now.

Runner-Up - Grindhouse

Photobucket

Some may think I should have chosen something more Oscar-worthy, but I truly loved everything about this one. Trust me, it not just because I'm a Tarantino fan, or a zombie fanatic, or love the idea of two movies mashed together, or thought the fake trailers in between were great, or thought Death Proof was amazing, or loved Kurt Russel's performance, or thought Planet Terror was grossly entertaining, or anything like that.

Now onto albums...

Best Albums of 2007

25. Stars - In Our Bedroom After the War

Photobucket

24. Holy Fuck - LP

Photobucket

23. Dinosaur Jr. - Beyond

Photobucket

22. Feist - The Reminder

21. Menomena - Friend and Foe

20. St. Vincent - Marry Me

19. Beirut - The Flying Club Cup

Photobucket

18. Les Savy Fav - Let's Stay Friends

17. Le Loup - The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millennium General Assembly

Photobucket

16. Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris

Photobucket

15. Kevin Drew - Spirit If...

14. A Place to Bury Strangers - A Place to Bury Strangers

13. Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Kortedala

12. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

11. Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha

10. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

9. Electrelane - No Shouts, No Calls

8. Justice - †

7. Deerhunter - Cryptograms

6. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

Photobucket

5. The National - Boxer

Photobucket

4. Wilco - Sky Blue Sky

Photobucket

3. Okkervil River - The Stage Names

Photobucket

Now narrowing down between numbers 1 and 2 for me was very tough. They were both such amazing records and I listened to them both the most out of all the new music I got this year. I ended up choosing based on the elements perhaps not found exactly on the album itself, but the sheer joy, excitement, and exhilaration I felt when I first got the album. For me, my number 1 got that spot not only based on the music, but also the experience...

2. Battles - Mirrored

Photobucket

1. Radiohead - In Rainbows

Photobucket

(And yes, the gorgeous disc box played a small role too.)

Honorable Mention: Vampire Weekend's Demo. I decided not to include it in the list because it wasn't an official official record, just a collection of their material which had been recorded and put onto CD-R, but the songs on said CD-R were amazing nonetheless. It certainly would have made it into my top 5, has I not been such a stickler for myself.

*WHEW*

In other news, Happy New Year everyone. 2008. Whoo.

Resolutions? Well other than the fact the I think the whole idea is kind of lame, I do have two actually.

The first, is to do things, make choices, and surround myself with people that make me happy. I resolve to take a lot more responsibility in terms of my happiness. This whole year has been pretty hard on me, but I've learned that I can actually be happy despite the mountain or circumstances that lie on top of me. We'll see how that goes...

The second is to put a lot more effort into this blog and writing in general. Not only am I going to double up my work on the paper, but I'm going to structure this blog a little bit more. I plan on adding some weekly columns in the coming weeks (like YouTube Fridays or Album of the Week), so I can kind of force myself to write, even if it's meaningless blogging or updates, I still want to get in the habit of doing things like that.

Well, I guess that's it for now. Like I said, it's been a rough past two days, but I'll upload photos from my cruise and gab about that for a little bit, haha. It was quite a fun trip.

2008, ready or not, here I come...

_______________________________________________________________________________

You say you don't know what love means
Anymore
Since I found you
I'm tearing down the walls without you

And I'm getting lost in all the plans
That I heard you make
About the older times
About the greater times
Oh I don't know, I don't know anyway

Look up
Look up
I'll keep my eyes on you
Do you remember when you were a child then?
And you laughed when you looked at the moon

There's no meaning anymore

We're floating in the sky
And if you think that we are older now
It's just our heads are butterflies
Are you the one that I've been waiting for?

You say you don't know what love means
Anymore
Since I found you
I'm tearing down the walls, the walls
The walls...

Top 10 Songs of Two Thousand and Seven (2007) [28 Dec 2007|11:02pm]
[ mood | chipper ]

So as the year comes to a close, I felt I should share all things favourite of mine. The first of three lists (the other two being Top 10 Films and Top 25 albums), this entry attempts to let everyone know my favourite tracks from the year of '07. Many of the songs on this list represent, to me, an amalgamation of the artist or artist's album of which the respective songs came from. Maybe that's a bad thing, but this is just a silly, personal list of mine which catalog the songs I most enjoyed listening to this year.

10. Sipping on the Sweet Nectar - Jens Lekman

This Swedish-pop song-weaver is certainly strange, but there's something affectionate about his style. I think this tune captures the sound of the majority of his new album and what can I say, it's an infectious tune.

9. Tbtf - Kevin Drew

The front man of Broken Social Scene's latest solo album was good, but didn't quite live up to the high standards set by BSS. However, this track (among others) were quite strong and this song, in particular, evokes memories of Broken Social Scene's "Cause = Time." That, and I think this song is catchy as hell.

8. To Fix the Gash In Your Head - A Place to Bury Strangers

This is one track on the album that I cannot help but come back to every time I play the record. I love the intro and the rhythm keyboard throughout. I love the lyrics. I love how loud it is. I love how they sound like a metal-My Bloody Valentine.

7. Plasticities - Andrew Bird

This year, I discovered Andrew Bird and I was glad I did so. I love his song writing style. I can really appreciate that he's primarily a solo act and the large amounts of live looping he does at his shows. Anyways, this song stresses many of the elements (catchy melodies, lo-fi guitars, and violins) which are found throughout the album. Thumbs up Andrew.

6. The Crystal Cat - Dan Deacon

Shear energy bottled up by Deacon and delivered to the masses. Prescribed for a rainy day or Saturday nite.

5. Someone Great - LCD Soundsystem

The best song off their new record. I think what makes this song for me is the combination of their patented pop-sound combined with the song's heartfelt lyrics. James Murphy isn't just singing about Daft Punk anymore, and that sentiment is endearing.

4. You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb - Spoon

Great record. I think this song is one of the best tracks on it. Sure, it's a little Beatlesque, but that's only one of it's many charms.

3. Reckoner - Radiohead

One of the best tracks off of In Rainbows. I love Thom's falsetto vocals and Phil's washed-out drums. The soft, extended bridge is beautifully done as well. It hard for me to gauge my favourite track off the album (as it changes every time I listen), but this one is consistently in my top three.

2. Tonto - Battles

Though many have said "Atlas" is the better song, I think "Tonto" is the strongest song to come out of that wonderful album. What makes this song for me? Other than the exceptional build-up to the 2:45 mark, the overdriven hook the bands hits at 3:25 (and let's last for what seems like the blink of an eye) sells me every time. I fokking love this tune. And yes, it was even better live.

1. D.A.N.C.E. - Justice

In a list with a lot of "catchy" tunes, this track is by far the catchiest. Does anyone not immediately fall in love with this song after hearing it? It takes the best of old-school MJ and Daft Punk and blends it into something ridiculous. Something ridiculous that makes you want to dance, even if all you've got is little kicks.

____________________________________________________________________

Alas, the more critical (read educated) Best of '07 lists (Albums and Films) will be arriving sometime next year. I'd type up both lists (and their brief explanations) tonight, though I have to be awake in about four hours and head to Detroit-Metro airport. I hope that's explanation enough for the delay.

But if not, I'm going on a little vacation and I won't be returning until the 3rd of January, but when I get back home. I'll post both lists back to back.

&& Happy New Year!

Keep calm and carry on...

Alas, winter has arrived! Burr.

In other news, I've been keeping busy as of late. That means I've been song writing quite a bit. I finally got my new amplifier (long story: fuck UPS), so I've been tweeking my sound(s) and experimenting quite a bit. Add that to some new pedals and new instruments, and I should have some pretty great stuff in the near future. I'm doing my best to keep on track this break and I strongly plan on getting a four song EP recorded this time around. If I don't develop some sort of schedule, I feel like I get nothing done. In other words, New songs coming soon!

Looking back on old entries, I seem to always talk about recording and not much comes to fruition, which is frustrating. If it's not one hurdle, such a lack of material to record, it's another, such as the huge difficulty in recording all by my lonesome. However, this time around I actually am going in with a good amount of ideas and I've got the time and equipment to make the process as free-flowing as possible. Hip hip, hoo-rah!

But wait, there's more!

This news is a little late, my apologies.

Wednesday of last week, I saw an amazing band live, Vampire Weekend. Now, the show was great; wonderfully energetic and it sounded thrice as good as their demo CD-R that's going around. I highly recommend you check them out.

Anyways, as said, the show was a lot of fun. The band performed about 4/5ths of their catalog and made time in between songs to react and talk to the crowd. The show was in a tiny posh bar in downtown Pontiac, which suited the band nicely, as they were able to intimately rock out, call for sing-alongs, and the like. While there, I got up front and took some great pictures. I even got a shot of the band and met the guys after the show. Fokking great.

Here are some excellent, if I do say so myself, shots of the show.

Lastly, this afternoon, Christmas came early!

My Radiohead discbox arrived! It blew me away and was certainly worth the eighty dollar price tag. The bonus disc was worth the price alone (serious, those 8 tracks are practically a must), but the beautiful packaging, gorgeous artwork, and vinyl just make it too great. I was ecstatic. I haven't been so excited to receive a package in quite a long time. && the discbox is individually numbered. Whoo-hoo!

Here's pictures of all that "beautiful packaging, gorgeous artwork, and vinyl"...

Ugh.

10 page due tomorrow at 10:00 and I've only got 6 pages done so far. Sure, I have plenty of time, but this doesn't make the assignment any less of a pain in the ass.

I also must select 2-3 pieces of my writing for the Creative Writing Reading tomorrow. I'd consider posting what I'm considering and having some sort of vote, but I need to make my decision is about an hour or two. I'll post my resulting selections though, hopefully everything will turn out well.

Ugh.

Winter break begins a week from today and I'm ecstatic. I need the break. I need to record the songs I've written (4 track EP, people). I need a vacation. 4 weeks will be perfect

Tonight is the worst though, time slows down for a bit after I finish this paper and rehearse my readings.

EDIT:// My Radiohead discbox arrives sometime next week, OMGLOLZ!!!

So, so, so the above video if from the Radiohead webcast, which I'm sure all of you watched. I fucking love their cover of "Headmaster's Ritual" too (psst, all the clips are on YouTube by now).

Unfortunately, I only got to watch a portion of it. I had to leave The Zoo and head down to Ann Arbor for an amazing Battles show...

Tonto was great, Tras was great, Tij was great, SZ2 was great, the whole performance was fokking great. As a musician, seeing how they accomplish their intricate, complex sound live was really awe inspiring. Not only that, but their music rocks. That's a pretty poorly descriptive adjective, I know, but anyone who listens to them knows what I'm talking about. John Stanier is a phenomenal drummer, holding every song together and turning every performance into one, trace-like groove. Again, anyone who has listened to them before can just imagine every great part of the band being highlighted live (particularly, in this case, the rhythm section). Regardless of rhythm, seeing four guys just sync-up to one other via the ostentatious amount of live looping is brilliant. I highly, highly recommended listening to this band, particularly downloading their album, Mirrored. Do it. It's genius.

NEWS! Okay, so, since I'm stuck up at school, I recorded another laptop tune to quell any desire anyone has of me to deliver more music. This one's a really, simple bare-bones cover, but I'm rather proud of it. I feel it accomplishes the effect I was going for.

Therefore, listen to it here, or here, or by clicking any of the previous links if you're interested. Of course, feedback is welcome and appreciated. Snoogans.

But I won't let
How I sincerely feel, dear
Stand in my way
'Cause there's no love lost
That I can't find again
