venus waning
Last week, in research class, we viewed ancient little figurines of venuses. ("Venus", as I've learned, is a word used to classify any statue/ figurine/ sculpture that focuses on depicting the female form. These little statues were prehistoric, so much so that some of them were even carved out of mammoth bone.

The fascination for the female figure through the ages is amazing. The ideal female figure has changed and morphed so much through the centuries, and is always the subject of debate, while the ideal male figure on the other hand has pretty much remained the same.

Back in prehistoric times, this was sexy:

Most of the ancient venuses found share this common silhouette, enlarged breasts, full hips, and sometimes even a prominent vulva. And always a large or pregnant belly. The fascination with pregnancy was very evident in over a dozen specimens that we viewed.

Then we got into a small discussion comparing the modern idealized female silhouette to the clay venuses. It made me realize just how much the female body has been streamlined through the ages. Was this merely just a matter of changing aesthetics? Why is it that a distinctly female figure like those above are considered "fat" or "unattractive" by many nowadays?

I suppose that back then, taste in women was more primal. Our species was concerned with survival, and "sexy" was a woman who looked like she could bear and nurture children. Sex was a means of reproduction.

In more recent times, with the advent of birth control, and the lifting of societal pressure for women to have children, sex and reproduction have now been completely emancipated from each other. Reproduction is completely different from sex-for-sex's-sake. Hence, there is now a split between "sex object", and "mother". The new poster image for the sexy female is one who looks like she can give pleasure, and not one who can get pregnant. (Of course, not everyone subscribes to the poster image. Deep in the human psyche, that urge for reproduction is still there, which accounts for certain preferences. )

Recent surveys have shown that at this point in history, far less women will have children now, and most of them ones that do will have them at a later age. Women now would rather focus on career first. It used to be common for women to have children in their twenties (or in their teens if you go further back in time), but now women get alot of encouragement to put that on hold.

Interesting how art reflects the times we live in.

shortcomings

I've been reading alot of good graphic novels lately. Since I've been in an illustration course, I find I am more attracted to the image than to the word. Graphic novels provide me with a good balance of both.

The most recent one I've read is Adrien Tomine's "Shortcomings".

It is not only well-drawn but well-written. It's amazing how gracefully he tackles a very sensitive and contemporary issue.

It's about a Japanese-American couple living in L.A.. She is an advocate for Asian-American causes, being multicultural herself. He thinks it's all rubbish, and that he has never felt any sort of "otherness" growing up as an Asian in America; and yet unconsciously gravitates towards white women because he views them as a sort of "prize" to be won for an Asian man.

That was a very simplistic explanation, and made the novel sound pretty stupid actually, but I can't possibly explain an issue so complex and so subtly handled. The novel has its key moments. The young couple takes time apart from each other. He dates a series of Caucasian women who all show a genuine liking for him, but eventually drop him because they feel treated like a "trophy girlfriend". The fact that he can "snag" a Caucasian woman is a big ego boost for him because it is revealed that he has deep insecurities about his manhood, being Asian and smaller in body type than Caucasian men. But when the Japanese girl starts seeing a Caucasian man, he blows up and calls the whole thing sick and twisted and asks why a "big, white guy" would be attracted to a tiny Asian girl, implying that it has to do with fetishism. The story explores a weird sort of racial double-standard.

I didn't know that the issue it tackled was a valid issue until I read it. Prior to that it was the sort of thing that others had something to say about when it came up. And I've heard some pretty outrageous things.

Someone I actually know once said that white guys who found Asians attractive had a higher potential for becoming a pedeophile since Asian girls tend to look young and child-like. (And this was actually said to a white guy who had an Asian girlfriend, right to his face).

There is also the "mail-order bride" label. I once made an illustration for a Pinoy-Australian magazine, of a Filipina beside a Caucasian man. I was made to modify the artwork before publishing and make the man only half-Asian so that the woman wouldn't look like a mail-order bride. (I was absolutely furious, mind you, but it was a commission).

In my own experience on the other hand, having a blond boyfriend has merited me congratulatory thumbs-up signs from some other Pinays, almost as if I snagged a prize at a fair. And I knew a Chinese family back home whose women are only allowed to date other Chinese... and white guys.

The month my mother told us she had cancer was the same month my sister announced she was pregnant. An unplanned pregnancy isn't the best of news in most families, but to my mother, it gave her a new reason to live. She was going to have a granddaughter!

While Ananda formed in my sister's womb, my mother dreamed of her and fought to keep the cancer cells away. There they were, two organisms fighting to live so that they could unite.

By the time my ma had done her last chemo and radiation treatment, Ananda was born into the waiting arms of her grandmother who held her like a sweet reward she had won in the battle against a life threatening disease.

And last night, we celebrated my mother being 5 years cancer-free!

It's been a long, hard battle for her, and 5 years in the clear is a milestone in more ways than one. Most recurrences happen within 5 years of treatment, and the fact that there was no recurrence is a major hurdle cleared.

A surprise celebration took place last night. Friends and family came over to celebrate this new chance at life!

We sand "Happy Birthday", because it was sort of like a birthday. Birthdays celebrate life.

Can you?

....just make one lucky guess what the fuck I saw last night?

We got home around 5 am.

I almost cried... Almost because I'm saving my tears up for tonight *hint* *hint*

I can't post photos, sorry. I'm legally bound as of the moment to keep the photos for private use. (I didn't take these naman eh, shempre I'm in them HELLOOOO hahaha)

I was told that if they see cameras at the venue tomorrow that are not officially sanctioned by the organizers, they will have to ask the guest to bring the cameras back to their respective cars. So my friends (those I've spoken to about this dilemma) set yourselves up for a bit of a hassle later on (I am... bouncers are scary), but in any case there's still a small chance you may be able to bring them... Just think positive. When you do! Nothing can stop you! All for the love, all for the loooove!

Bahala na si Batman! Rakenrol nalang! SVIP Baby!!!

now I shall go back to sleep.I woke up so early with a really bad case of LSS!!!!!!!

EDIT --- Just so I can say I was there, check out Quark Henares' video of last night's soundcheck

See my head on the bottom of the screen taking pictures, hahaha. Makita niyo I'm going to raise my lens and shoot. My head is predominantly at the bottom of this video, weee!!! Ganda ng batok ko! :P Woot! I love you Quark! HAHAHAHAHA

letters abroad:
dear mum

i'm sorry i wasn't able to find yr george benson/al jarreau cd & i'm sorry i couldn't bring it to cubao & give it to mr fores so that you can claim yr front row tickets to the george benson/al jarreau concert when you come visit us next week. before you get mad at me over facebook for "not doing the one little thing you (kindly) asked me to do (after you sent me yr paycheck to buy a new laptop)" please understand that dad sent me to pay stanley's tuition in the grade school today because stanley conveniently forgot to tell him that his card's out on monday & he can't get it if he doesn't pay his tuition

so i went to pay his tuition & the line was long so i studied while standing between two loud mothers trading fashion tips & by the time i was done there wasn't enough time between then & my first class to haul my ass back home, dig through yr cd collection, haul my ass on a train to cubao to find mr fores who is always in a meeting anyway & get back in time to read for a quiz, write a report, & dance the motherfucking ride-me-dead dance for both my orgs

because that's what i do, you know. while i'm talking to you on here, maybe you should know that the cook isn't cooking very well & that my older cousin in charge of doing the groceries as part of earning her keep here in the house isn't doing that very well either

dinner tonight malansa yung pusit & the stew was too salty, there were stones in the rice, & as if that wasn't enough, my father lifted from his plate a slab of marbled fat from the meat stew & smeared it purposefully across the glass tabletop, a consistency of pureed mashed potatoes, sickly yellow white, & he said, slowly deeply to the entire family frozen "you are going to kill me" & i understand him, i really do, because to come home to terrible food is a nightmare & yes, he deserves better.

goddamnit i deserve better

but i'm not going to talk about that now because i hate coming home to bad food too & starting tomorrow i'll be the one to buy the food because i like doing the groceries anyway (let me convince myself of this) right down to the stinking wet market, the pig carcasses swinging from hooks, the dull thud of cleavers. the chubby ladies in aprons pushing away their sweaty hair from their foreheads, using the backs of their bloody hands. the permanently wet floor hosed down every thirty minutes to keep the animal blood from congealing. the fish with their gleaming eyes, the clacking of crabs inside plastic buckets, dragging each other down.

the supermarket is fine too, wheeling carts surrounded by names names names. in a supermarket everything wants you, everything wants you the way you are at the same time promising to make you better: the wiser consumer, the smarter eater, the prettier specimen. the right one, all the time. i'd like to live in a supermarket, the world of easy packaging & bright colors.

i went off track. what i meant to say is that without you things fall apart & could you please come back home. i know you want to be away from us & from that distance it's so easy to tell me just to pray for a good day everyday, but it's so hard to sleep & even harder to wake up, prayer won't fill up those hours in between, what does is work

good hard work, fucking hard work that comes & comes & doesn't let up

i'm tired, mum, i really am, & why does it feel like it's because yr not here

ligaya
After much anxiety, frantic phone calls and a great deal of wheedling, I got the confirmation text that told me that I was able to score press passes to cover the Eraserheads concert.

*hyperventilates in a corner*

Sorry, I sound like such a fifth grader (which was when I first started liking the band back in 1995). But I've never been this excited about a concert. Grade school days! Woohoo!

I had a crush on Ely Buendia in the sixth grade. Kind of sad when you think about it, but the band's songs really struck me like no other band had. Twelve years later, I can still sing along to the songs and relate them to various stages in my life.

Anyway, I don't want to preempt anything. I'm just really excited.

Yeah, this is what this pointless blog entry is all about.

P.S. I find it so funny that every other person's Facebook status says something about the Eraserheads.

What feels good today
Dipping my hands in melted wax.
A translucent skin-tight glove, another dip, another layer.
Until the whole hand is moon-white.

What I did today
I danced!

What we did last night
Drei stroked my hair; I purred.
We had black bean soy milk and good conversation.

What I will do tomorrow
Maybe I'll go dancing again!

What is happening
"The Feast Of The Hungry Ghosts," said Karen.
Poor unfortunate souls! Here... have some Scooby Snacks!

What to do now

An Influx of Baby Mamas
It started with Diego Luna and his younger girlfriend (whom he recently married) who happens to be just a little older than me.

As a way of dealing with the heartbreaking news (at least I choose to think so), Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego's loverboy, months later announced that he and his girlfriend are also expecting a baby (and this is probably his way of getting over the Diego-induced heartbreak).

Just when I thought Baby Mamas would stop taking away all the good (looking) men in this world, I stumbled upon an article on Ohnotheydidnt! He has absolutely no relation with Diego and Gael (because those two are fine in their own little world). I think the only relation he has with those two is that he also has a special place in my heart.
Welcome to the club )

A simple request from a photography hobbyist
Dear events producers,

This generation of young people is a largely individualistic one. All of us are trying to nurture and hone new talents every day. All of us are looking for new paths to tread and new frontiers to discover. All of us are trying to develop ourselves and our art.

Technology has advanced in such a way that it has become possible for us to do this with relative ease. Some of us dabble in music, some in graphic art, you get my drift.

Those of us who dabbled in photography earlier in life (or those of us who are just a little bit older than all the other kids) had to make do with poor quality equipment because we just couldn't afford that expensive professional stuff.

Nowadays, though, entry-level digital single lens reflex cameras cost the same as, if not less than, small point-and-shoot cameras with inferior photo quality. Those of us who are moderately serious about what we do will, of course, opt for output quality over size and handiness. That means digital SLRs.

That having been said, every other kid you see probably owns a digital SLR, not for professional purposes, but just because we like to have better control over the quality of the pictures we take. If we can pay the same price, or less, to take better pictures with a better camera, why shouldn't we?

I don't really understand why "professional" cameras are barred from events like major concerts. If you think about it, the people who bring in small point-and-shoot cameras also take pictures of the artists and the performance, and there's a huge likelihood that those pictures are going to be absolutely crap. It's those pictures, the ugly ones, that people see. Not the nice ones the REAL professional photographers and media people take during the first few songs of the set. I think the people who don't get to go to these events deserve better peer coverage than that.

Those people are also the people who take the ugly videos you see on YouTube, so I think they "cheat" you more than we would. We just take snapshots for posterity.

We don't want to bring in our nice cameras because we have intentions of selling the photos we take. Who would we sell to? And why? We just want to take beautiful pictures that capture epic moments in our personal history. We just want to further develop our skills. We just want to show our pictures off to our friends on our own blogs and our private networking accounts for our gratification, and share these pictures with the people who didn't get the opportunity to be there. People with ugly cameras and ugly pictures do that. Why can't we do them one better? :(

Thanks. <3

MDJ Superstar Spreads Himself Thin

I need another blog like I need a hole in my YC bikini brief (for the man who packs a wallop), but after going through a Tabulas, two LiveJournal's, a Vox, and a Multiply, MDJ Superstar has decided to finally stake his claim in the WordPress world.

The Adventures of MDJ Superstar

(The URL is mousehole.wordpress.com, but the awesome thing is that mark.dejoya.name leads to it too. Doesn't that rock?)
