Bio
My education is my life -- I love academics, I love being challenged, I love being presented with topics I know nothing about and learning how to work my way through them and apply them to myself. I have a B.S. in Psychology (minor in Sociology) and plan to eventually go to graduate school for a PhD in Clinical Psychology. I definitely want to be a clinician, but I also want to work my way into academia. I have a passion for research, and absolutely love the idea of taking on the professor role. I'm in the midst of the insane, stressful, overwhelming process of choosing and applying to graduate programs right now, and desperately trying to hold onto the hope (and develop the confidence to believe) that I'll reach these rather lofty goals.

I adore my family - in all of their enormous, blended, crazy ridiculous, dramatic, lovingly silly glory. I have two beautiful, hilarious nieces who mean everything to me. I spend as much time with them as I possibly can, and (generally!) love every second of it.

I can't wait to be a mother -- every part of me aches for the day that I have my first baby. I spend a ton of time with children and find it to be so wonderfully energizing and rewarding. I'm fascinated by child development (and developmental psychology) and love interacting with parents and observing the values and effects of different parenting styles.

I like to be alone. I don't "party." I don't drink. I love politics and am very comfortable with my beliefs (Obama 2008!). I consider myself to be very spiritual, but have a very difficult time with many social and cultural aspects of organized religion. I love visual art, particularly photography. I love music - from Tori Amos, Iron & Wine, and Nellie McKay, to Bach and Yo-Yo Ma, to the fantasticness that is Broadway. I love writing. I love reading. I love questioning and searching and debating things that have no ultimate answers. Bush = not a fan. I can't stand people who are ignorant and have no desire to learn. I loathe poor grammar (though I'll admit to being a bit of a commaholic).

I have a passion for social justice issues, particularly related to poverty and education. On 2007, I spent sixteen days in Guatemala and the entire experience shook my world in an indescribably profound way. My heart absolutely, completely remains in Guatemala and I'm counting down the days until I can go back (my hope is to spend a month or more there before starting graduate school). If you're ever searching for perspective, go to Central America.

Finally, I'm going to be cliche as all get-out and say the following: I have changed enormously over the past several years, in ways that I honestly never thought were possible. I still struggle quite a bit, but I'm working as hard as I can to develop who I am, develop a sense of self-confidence, and move away (far away) from self-destructiveness. This journal primarily chronicles that piece of my life, and is sometimes filled with optimism, strength, and clarity...and sometimes not so much. I write about school, my daily interactions with wonderful and inspiring people, and of course, I always make sure to note the mood-enhancing bouts of crazy silliness.

This journal has been my "safety" for the past several years, and I rarely hold anything back when I'm writing. For that reason, it remains strictly friends only and I only add individuals who have the ability and desire to be supportive (and this is absolutely mutual). I've met some extraordinary people on LJ, and I value them in ways I can't express. While I'm not necessarily in the market for adding anyone at the moment, I'm always up for meeting new people, particularly if we have several friends (and/or interests) in common. xo
