I uploaded a recording of "Handyman" to my myspace.

It's been my staple tune for a while now and was a real benchmark in my writing so it's time to share it with the world.
Check it out.

"Oh Sam, half my job is fixing imaginary problems. I certainly don't mind coming over here and fixing your imaginary problems."

Sam wanted me to check out the stereo system in the banquet hall before the murder mystery tonight. Only half the speakers were working. Though I was disappointed that I didn't even get to open my toolbox, it's always nice to come back out of a job five seconds later declaring you fixed it. I could have milked it a little bit, I think, it was just too damn simple.

Still no cigarettes. The suckiness comes and goes in waves. It's hard to type with two of your fingers taped together.

Yeah, the turret doesn't open. You have to thread all the way around that assinine square sound head. You can almost see it on the threading diagram on the shutterbox. The flywheel is just the white circle you see where the lower feed sprocket is. The big knob on the front is framing and the little Knob under it is, get this, the gate tension!? Fucking Germans.

I have an early mix of my new song "House of Cards" posted on myspace. There's still a lot of work to be done, but since it's so different than everything else I've been writing lately, I'm interested and excited to get some feedback on it.

New Lost Cause mix [26 Nov 2006|09:55pm]
I posted a new mix of "Lost Cause" on my myspace page. You should check it out.

If you're interested in what I tweaked, added, removed, or replaced, you can find that info in the blog. But it's better now, and that's all you really need to know.

I worked on tracking "Lost Cause" all day today. It's still very green, but it's fun and I'd like folks to hear it, so go check it out. That's a working title by the way, because I'm sure there are a thousand other songs called "Lost Cause" out there, so I'm accepting suggestions for a new title.

On the cover of the Rolling Stone [21 Nov 2006|12:48pm]
a little while ago my nieces were selling magazines for a fund raiser and my mom insisted I get something, on her, so I got Rolling Stone - it was the only thing I was remotely interested in. I checked my mail when I got home from work at 2 Am last night and I finally got my first issue. The cover story is about Borat. So I had to play with Gizmo before I went to bed and figured I could flip through it during. I've never tried to read anything while playing with him. I've played bass and guitar which he seems to like. He'll come up and pluck the strings with his teeth, which is cute, but I have to keep him from chewing on the body. So he's running around, and I knew I would have to keep him from chewing on the pages, but I didn't know he'd get so jealous. He did not like me reading for some reason, or he just didn't get it. He'd constantly jump on the page I was on. I shew him away and he'd run around a little, but as soon as I'd turn the page he'd jump back on, like he wanted to see what was so interesting. Eventually he just jump up on my shoulders and read, um, over my shoulder. I wasn't really reading, just flipping, but there was a sidebar in the Borat article with little blurbs from some of the people he duped, which I found interesting, so I got a little destracted by it. Gizmo was being good, running back and forth on my shoulders, putting his hands on my head and chewing on my hair. Next thing I knew was a sharp stinging pain in my left earlobe. He bit me! Hard! I yelped and he knew what he had done and ran into his cage to hide from me. He's a rodent, he chews the fuck out of hard wood, he can bite hard but never does unless he's really feeling threatened and scared. This just seemed like he was being a bitch and wanted attention. Little fucker drew blood! He wouldn't come back out again until I put the magazine away. He was good after that.
I still wish I could get him a friend. With my new job I'd finally be able to afford it, but I don't think I'll be able to take care of two chinchillas by myself. I'm already kinda stressing about what I'm going to do with him when my job sends me to Knoxville for a week in January. I'll figure something out, I always do.

In other news, if you haven't listened to Disappearing Girl on my myspace page and you wanted to, you should check it out before 4pm or so today. I'm thinking I'm going to pull it and make some adjustments. I don't think I picked the best vocal takes, I was going for the right emotional context and not really worrying about how in tune everything was, and now it's kind of bothering me and I want to try some other takes. I also want to trim away at and adjust some of the percussion. I guess I could leave it up there while I make the changes. I'll work on it today and if I finish before work I'll just swap it out with a new mix, but if I don't get done doing what I want to do, I'll pull it and put the new one up in a day or two. How's that?

hitting the road [24 Jun 2006|07:31am]
Internet/cable stuff is going back today so it's my last chance to write. We're planning on taking off tomorrow morning but there has been some talk about just leaving tonight. Don't know if that'll happen though. We'll probably be hitting Columbus on the 28th or 29th - Eric, you'll be getting a call from me soon. Then hershey the next day and a day at hershey park. I don't think I'm going to beable to make the Boston leg this time, as I have been asked to start work on the 3rd. I could probably theoretically make it up for a day, just long enough to catch FBC on saturday - but I think I'm going to need a couple days of vegatation before I start work again. I'll come up to boston once or twice over the summer though - I promise.

Last Days [09 Aug 2005|02:57pm]
Okay Gus, I think it's about time we graduated from film school already. How 'bout we try writing a script and then getting actors to, you know, ACT in it.

Lame lame lame, so lame.

Except there was a neat part where Blake (IE: Curt Cobain) does a wicked loop jam. Actually, the three musical segments were the only thing I liked about the movie.

Oh man, Destroy All Humans is so much fun.
I love the anal probe gun. Shoot someone with it at full blast and a stream of shit shoots out their ass and then their head explodes and their brains pop out. Too much fun.

Well all the major raw tracks of Paralysis are recorded now. No bass yet, I really haven't decided if I want bass or not. I just have trouble filling up the depth of the song with guitar as my only accompanying instrument. It probably NEEDS bass, sure, but it won't be an accurate representation of the how the song will sound should I play it live and solo. Of course, considering the sequenced drums and all the processing I've done to my voice, it's already not quite "accurate."

Man, I figured out a really great tool for sharpening up my vocals. Pitch shifter! Not like finding wrong notes and moving them into place, but rather the source signal doubled and altered to a degree I specify. My "pitch" slider goes +/- 12, so I assume it goes by half steps. I set that slider to 0.08. Just a quartertone off the source signal. Mod depth to 0.10 because I don't want a noticable sweep between the two pitches. Then I have sliders for feedback, delay, and wet and dry mix...so I set feedback and delay to zero, Dry mix at 100% and wet mix at about 50%. Dry mix is the volume of the source signal, and wet mix is the volume of the shifted pitch. It's like two voices singing just barely out of tune from each other, but obscuring the pitch axis. Between that and slightly chorused guitar tracks, my voice sounds really sharp. Hey, I'm impressed, but it is 3 am and things may sound differently in the morning.

night.

I can't believe it. I just received an e-mail from T-mobile claiming that I accepted a refund of $15 on 7/29/05 and an excerpt from my contract that states if I accept any refund it deems the matter "resolved"
So I sent a real angry letter back with an excerpt from my e-mail response to the piddly refund they offered me where I flat out rejected it and demanded a refund in full three times. I told them if they try to persue that angle which was a flat out lie, the DA's offices of OR and WA would hear about it (They both got back to me and said they were looking into my case.)

T-mobile must die.

Got my zip drive installed after a few failures, and found the old cakewalk files from the four track recording session Jahmin and I had in my Boston apartment. I was listening to the final product of those recordings earlier today as a contrast to what I'm doing now. So, the cakewalk files are incomplete because I really didn't know how to backup the files properly at the time and basically have none of the raw audio files. So I went into my closet and cracked open my tape archives and quickly found the original four track tape.

So...I'm thinking REMASTER!

In addition, I got 23 samples of raw John Bonham drum tracks today! Oh a sampaling we'll go!
Glad I have two days off.

I should really be in bed. But I was really on a roll tonight. Started recording "paralysis," and maybe it's just the exhaustion or being stuck in headphone land for so long, but it's sounding really good.

I started off with a scratch guitar track to a click. Then I went through and sequenced a drum part and erased the original guitar track. Then I took each of the parts of the "drum set" (bass, snare, hi hat, ride/crash, toms) and recorded them into separate audio tracks.
Next a recorded a new guitar part. This was the fun part, the part I've been waiting like forever to do...I found a nice warm tone on my VOX and miked it real close, dead on the cone, with a dynamic mic. I covered the amp and mic with chrissy's thick velvet blanket. Then I took my condenser and miked the body of my fat ol' hollowbody jazz guitar. I've been fantasizing what that might sound like for a while now, and raw it's not worth much, but once all is processed and mastered I think it definately added a natural richness to the sound. Just for fun I cloned my amplified track and EQed all the bass out so all that stood out was the main little melody line, sharp and bright. I Put a real fast vibrato/chorus on it and left it low in the mix.

Then I spent a couple hours mixing and adding effects till everything was tight and unified.
I just added a scratch vocal track to round out the night, and damned if I didn't sing it pretty damn well for not really trying. I'd like to dump it down to cd tonight, but I really need to crash, and I don't expect to have time before work tomorrow. I guess it's just gonna have to wait. But it's good to put sime down time in. I'll come back to it after work tomorrow and hear things I didn't hear before.

I sure do love having a computer that isn't obsolete yet.

Dear T-Mobile,

Here's a fun game I like to play with my bill:
6/01/05 7:50pm call to phone #xxx-xxxx 1 minute
6/01/05 7:51pm call to same number - 1minute
6/01/05 7:51pm call to same number - 1 minute
Huh, that's funny, I was never able to break the laws of time before I had T-mobile...you should put that in your ads: T-mobile, now with the ability to break the laws of physics!
This phenomena happens all over my bill:
on 5/27/05
on 6/03/05 (four different times)
on 5/20/05
on 6/06/05
on 6/08/05
on 6/14/05
on 6/19/05 (on this day, the second call at 6:16 is reported to have lasted 2 minutes, yet a third call was made to the same number at 6:17. I actually went BACK in time!)

Now these examples, which you've forced me to point out because clearly NO ONE is actually EXAMINING my bill but me, are only citing failed calls for which undoubtly prove I'm paying for time I'm not using. If you look even more closely you'll see that the vast majority of the calls on my bill are ended after 3 minutes after three or four tries to the same number, each call being recorded as 1 minute. An estute mind would factor in the number of efforts before the calls began connecting at all. When you look at my bill and see an average of 450 minutes, you're seeing an average of 450 failed attempts to make a three minute phone call.
YOU CAN NOT LOOK AT AVERAGE MINUTES USED AND ASSUME I ACTUALLY HAD FUNCTIONING SERVICE FOR ALL OF THOSE MINUTES.

For the love of God, stop thanking me for choosing T-Mobile,
you should be thanking me for not drumming up the public intrest in a class action law suit.
