7:03 am - A (slightly belated, but no less sincere) Birthday Wish!
I've spent the past three days setting up, running (I'm essentially co-chair), and cleaning up a book sale so I've been busy and exhausted by the end of each day - yesterday in particular when we ran it all day and then cleaned up for a few hours after. So, unfortunately, I forgot to post a birthday wish in a timely fashion. ;'(

In any case, here goes, on the theory that it's better late than never:

Happy Birthday to shirebound!!! I hope you had a fantastic birthday yesterday filled with people, animals and things you love and none of the stuff you don't! :-)

1:02 pm - Limerick No. 2771
I doubt I'll continue posting limericks regularly because in order to do that I need to keep up on news/events to write about and I haven't been consistently doing that. But, although I have not yet seen the last Hobbit film (we'll be waiting for the DVD or perhaps the cheap theater), I have heard Billy's song for the end credits and I love it. So today, I have this:

The last film ends with a song by Bill.
When I listen, it gives me a thrill.
It’s a lovely song – Sigh –
Titled: “The Last Goodbye”.
But to end feels quite bittersweet still.

4:17 pm - Limerick No. 2770 (I think)
I haven't posted a limerick in a looooooong time. From what I can tell the last was on 7/26/2011, except for a repeat one I posted for Thanksgiving after that. But, thanks to a comment by primula_baggins, I have this for you today:

Haven’t written in quite a long time
Anything based on a scheme of rhyme.
But a comment by Prim
Made me write on a whim,
Though I might be past my writing prime.

5:51 pm - The Princess Bride
Not that long ago, I saw that Cary Elwes published a book about making the movie The Princess Bride. So, I read that, which inspired me to reread the book by William Goldman, which I had read back in college, but enjoyed again. And, the edition I had this time was illustrated and included chapter one of "Buttercup's Baby" which is the sequel (though the rest isn't available ;-)). And, I also got the DVD and our whole family watched it together yesterday evening. It was a lot of fun. The kids had seen it before, but so long ago they didn't remember much.

And, other Princess Bride Fans out there?

[I consider it INCONCEIVABLE that there wouldn't be. LOL]

6:52 pm - Some favorite books from 2014
As I've been saying repeatedly for years, I am not good at picking only a small number of favorites, but I try to do it as top 5 by categories, so here goes (in no particular order within categories). [Keep in mind that if I did this on a different day - or a different hour - it would likely be different. ;-)]

FictionCollapse )

Non-FictionCollapse )

Young Adult FavoritesCollapse )

Classics FavoritesCollapse )

Two random books from a trilogy that I don"t know how to categorizeCollapse )

10:24 am - Books I Read or Listened to in 2014
For the past several years, I've been posting my reading lists. I really enjoy looking back at some of the ones I read early in the year. In any case, this year I finished five fewer than last year, but I still managed my goal of at least 150, so I'm happy. :-)

Books!Collapse )

I'd love to know what you've been reading too if you want to share. :-)

10:48 am - Billy Boyd's The Last Goodbye
I saw that TORn posted the whole end credits song ("The Last Goodbye") for the last Hobbit film, sung (and maybe co-written?) by Billy Boyd and I quite liked it, so thought I'd share it for those who may not have heard it yet. I love that Billy got involved with the last of the Middle-earth films in this way (even if I haven't enjoyed the Hobbit movies nearly as much as the LotR ones).

Someone on a different board posted that today is National Chocolate Day and I think that's something worth acknowledging and celebrating. :-D

I had some chocolate earlier to celebrate. [Even if it was before I saw this information, I was just ahead of the game, right? LOL]

9:42 pm - National Poetry Month
shirebound reminded me that April is National Poetry Month.

I have to admit that - other than writing limericks for quite a while there (though not for years now) - poetry is not really my thing.

But, the leader of my classics book club has been talking about discussing Aurora Leigh by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, a novel in verse, for years now, and so we read and discussed it this month. And I read every word, including the notes, which were helpful because they explained a lot of references that I would otherwise have missed. I found it mostly went OK, though I got a bit bogged down at some parts when she was being more philosophical or religious rather than moving along the plot, which I found easier. It's blank verse, so I mostly read it more as prose in my head because that was easier than reading it line by line.

Overall, I'd say I liked it, but I didn't love it. And, I'm not sorry that most novels are written in prose rather than verse. ;-)

Anyone else read it? Love it? Hate it? Other comments?
