7 seems to be an auspicious number: 7th day of the 7th month of a year whose digits add-up to 7. And on this day we completed converting our lexicon to a transfer lexicon.
Our
dictionary had split personalities: it was partly a definitional-dictionary and partly a transfer lexicon.
The five of us had taken the joint responsibility to update the lexicon and make it a respectable transfer lexicion. Today we completed this laborious task. Hopefully, a comparison of
BLEU scores of this system and the one with the previous version of the lexicon would confirm our suspicions of an improvement.
This was a task to be completed by our dear linguist aunty. A year spent in silly fights, arguments, and unnecessary design related discussions. It meant that a year had gone waste and that we were paying her for doing tasks that were mostly important to her and hardly to us.
In retrospect, the quote by
some IBM Researcher on Linguists seems very true: "Every time I fire a linguist, the performance of our ... system goes up."
